  1. First time in the stand this year. Got delayed by the wife "making" have a pace maker "installed". Kidding obviously but she got a tad pee o'd when i asked if it could wait till December. Not here 10 minutes and seen 2 doe. Dr won't "allow" me to draw my bow till next week when I officially hit the 5 week mark. So sitting here enjoying the view with the trusty 12 ga loaded with copper plated 4s for those darn turkeys that are always around, but of course won't be since I have a gun.

  4. This is off topic but thought I would share. I was at traffic court this week, every time the judge stated the fine he would say............. the fine is 100 dollars and Cuomos cut is 93 dollars for a total of 193. When a couple people complained he said to them I recomend you contact Cuomo and file a complaint.

  5. Dont think it matters where you sit with a buck that big. Dont need to do tricks to make it big, it is big, give the guy a break ,he can sit anywhere he wants !

  6. There must some data out there. Do areas where buckshot is required or commonly used have higher hunting accident rates than areas where it is illegal ? I remember the wailing, rending of hair and gnashing of teeth here in Steuben County a few years ago when rifles were first allowed after years of shotgun (slug) hunting. Somehow those dozens of rifle related hunting accidents that many predicted never happened. I suspect that a safe hunter will be a safe hunter regardless of the implement, and of course, a moron will be a moron.

  7. It is no doubt a huge deer, but I am getting tired of seeing pictures of guys sitting a half mile behind the buck to make it look gigantic. We all know what the trick is, so people need to give it up already.

  9. Why would anyone care how someone else wants to take a picture... its not your buck or your pic... having said that, typical -main-frame 6x6 bucks are extremely rare.. this buck is an absolute monster... he could sit a mile from this buck and it still would be HUGE... he could sit in the rack and it still would be HUGE... he could cut 3" of the top of each tine and this buck still would be HUGE... and there are some that care how the guy that KILLED the buck takes his own pictures? Really??

  10. i would go with loose powder over pellets, you can really dial in a fantastic load and have accurate power charges. pellets though listed at 50 grain can weigh in from 43-53.. does it make a difference? yes. i have 12 different muzzleloaders and they all shoot different loads and different bullets to get the best group. speed loaders are as fast as pellets and a good short starter is a must. minimum charge to start and familiarize your self with the gun 50 grain for a 50 cal. sight it in for windage with this and a few in low (4in or so at 50 yards is enough. a 5 grain increase will raise bullet elevation approx 1 in at 50 yards.. you should hear a distinct crack when you hit your maximum charge (more powder than nessary and you will get a lot of flame and fouling out you barrel (your not burning all your powder and wasting $$$) most guns shoot well between 85 and 110 grain. bullet /sabot depend on twist of your barrel.. fast twist shoot conicals or sabots, slow twist roundball and patch. ( though you can shoot a round ball out of fast twist if you decrease powercharge so ball doesnt strip in rifling).

  12. Sweat is part of the list of bodily fluids. Him going bowling last night while feeling fatigued might be the only concern. Even though he takes the same train I do, I'm not as concerned about Ebola as much as I am concerned about the with the inevitable public panic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. I have bought some quality stuff from over seas. I have bought some crappy stuff from over seas. I have bought some quality " Made In The USA" stuff, and I have bought some really crappy stuff. I agree with your comment Belo. Just because it was made in China or w/e, doesn't always mean it's crap. I made that comment before in this thread. There's also the issue of, not everyone has $2000 a year to buy the next super bow. Not everyone makes $100,000 a year. LOL

  17. Some piece of mind will come to those that use REAL ladders instead of homemade jobs! Ten years ago my buddy saw a sale at the hardware store and bought a bunch of decent aluminum extension ladders to be used with some hang on stands. Easy up/easy down. Tie the top in and you are cool as a cucumber.

  18. Yeah , that gets irritating after a while ! I also avoid the word "HARVEST" . I recall one of the hunting Gurus ( Bob Foulkrod ) gave a talk at a local Sportsmen's Dinner and said you don't harvest deer , you kill them . Forget the PC crap .

  21. I feel that hunting animals that are not free range is not hunting. I also think breeding deer for large racks is cheating. The whole system to me is based on people spending money to compensate for a lack of skill or work ethic. But, these are just my opinions.

  26. The reason why it has spread so rampant in those areas is because of how the handle their dead which is where it is most easiest to catch. The final stages and after death are the worst. There are cases where family's are lying and bribing to get the bodies of loved ones back, remember not every one has the same death rituals that we do.

  27. When I dove into muzzleloading I bought a used Cva staghorn, threw in two 50 grain pyrodex pellets and a Hornaday sst bullet, it shot three shots in 2 inches, which is plenty good for me. Make sure you clean good soon after you shoot it.

  30. Interesting discussion. My take on it is that scattershot is generally for jump hunting as in rabbits and birds. The thing being that a pattern of lethal projectiles is generally thought to be more effective on running game. I have to wonder if that same mentality applies when deer hunters use buckshot. Does it promote jump-shooting deer? Is the mentality aimed more toward putting a pattern of lead generally in the direction of a fleeing deer as in rabbits, and hoping something falls down? Do those that use buckshot really take carefully selected, accurately placed shots, where the background is scrutinized, and all safety rules observed, or is it just an instantaneous instinctive process of seeing a deer get up and unloading a pile of lead at it? I don't know, I'm just asking. But if any of this is the case, then I will say that there may very well be some weapons that promote unsafe shooting more than others. No it is not the weapon, but it may very well be the mentality that some weapons foster.

  31. Hunting WILL be banned unless it is accepted by a broad base of people. The Republican Party is not big enough to preserve the hunting heritage. Neither do most republicans support hunting. Making hunting a partisan issue will lower the needed broad-based support, not bolster public acceptance of it... Hunting must have broad support and offer something to the non-hunting public majority and non-game species, or it eventually will be banned and replaced with other funding strategies and tools... The key to preserving hunting is not worrying about the confirmed supporters of animal rights, but to win over the persons with neutral attitudes about hunting. Two ways the hunting community makes this difficult is by being critical of others and hero shots with trophies. You can talk till the cows come home ( and many of you will) but you will never convince the public at large to accept or understand trophy hunting. And yes, I did see the video someone posted a few days ago, not convincing at all.... The photo here has an entirely different meaning to other people and in their minds it is senseless. That isn't the only thing operating- anti hunters do not want children and/or women to see peers hunting and think its cool. They are aware of the attempts to recruit youth into the sport as well as the increasing interest in hunting by women. The antis perceive hunting as an ego-based activity. Thus they believe posing with a trophy is done to bolster ego. If they attack the photo, they believe they are reducing the ego value of hunting to new people. With some of these women posing with game farm deer and turkeys with their hair brushed and wearing make up all this is reinforced. If a kid or woman posing with an animal is seeking attention and approval, it may encourage other kids and women to follow and they want to short circuit the recruitment by deflating the ego instead of allowing it to inflate. Other new hunters come for food and/or the total experience - associating the sport with ego is an effective way to turn off those potential recruits as well...

  36. Yeah. Nice try. Buckshot users spend no time at the range. At least slug shooters practice. U try having 2 pellets of that crap hit at your feet and above your head into a tree and then tell me u like it. Feel free. U have nothing on me.

  38. I notice that most people who have a problem with any law enforcement officers.. seem to have had many problems with them... multiple tickets that, off course, per their account were unjustified... my experiences have been that most officers would rather not have to do the paperwork involved with issuing a bogus ticket... unless of course maybe you were giving the officer some reason not to like you or your attitude... I make it a point to be compliant with game laws or laws in general... if I didn't know the law and didn't know I was breaking a law I would simply tell the officer that and also tell him that I understand that I was wrong and would completely understand if he decided to write me a ticket.. ignorance is no excuse for the law. I have encountered the occasional "chest puffer" officer who starts out with the "I'm authority" attitude... but usually I kill their attitude with kindness... I find that they stop with that attitude when you show them what a more pleasant one looks like.

  46. Went to a Ebola preparedness meeting at the hospital I work at today. Seems like the space suits those nurses were wearing may have been the problem. Not an equipment failure, but a training failure. Best guess now is that the nurses , while in the process of removing the "suit" contaminated themselfs. The suits were unfamiliar garb, with a definite process requiring aprox 15 min to don or doff. There should have been training, practice and oversight before and during use of this gear.

  47. you should pay less attention to where something is made and more to the reputation of the brand. Unless of course you're trying to buy american. But that doesn't mean quality either, but i can understand why someone would try to buy american.
