Guys... I don't know what to say at this point. Today I ran up the hill behind the house to go try and call some turkeys to the camera. I found where some gobblers left some fresh tracks in the snow so I was pretty pumped and hopefull to see some action! Not 100yds past where I was gawking at those tracks right on the main trail, I almost tripped over this guy not 3ft in front of me before I noticed it! As soon as I seen this sucker I recognized it as a familiar buck I have some history with.... IT'S TUBBY!!! Now if I could ever find where he's hiding those right side antlers I be the happiest shedder in the world! Antlers- 6 Sets- 0 Dead bucks- 1 Dead doe/fawns- ?????3 points

Can't wait to see you holding Tubby in a picture this fall, with his antlers on!2 points

Same here, but given that he was re-elected just months after the Safe Act move, I have no reason to believe he'll ever be dethroned.2 points

I think having your kid attending a college 20 minutes away makes a parent way MORE aware of what's going on with their child in college, then having them be a 7 hours drive away. A lot of kids take full advantage of these new freedoms they get being in a school far away from home, and many can't handle it and start screwing up like they never did before. Going off to college doesn't mean a parent should not have a say or still have some authority over the kid whose college education they are paying for. Authority is not a bad thing. Those who respect authority and know who the boss is usually end up as the more disciplined and productive people in the long run, so in my view having some parental authority close by while the kid attends college can't hurt.2 points

Out of curoisity, what do you attribute this seemingly high winter kill to? Early deep snow cover in your area that stressed the deer early & then downhill from there? Or aren't those #s unusually high?2 points

Just got home. What a long day! Well she really liked Cortland. She wanted us to put a deposit today. But we told her we need to see St John's too before we make a decision. This is the same girl who was so against Cortland during the search and had her head set on Boston University. When she did not get in she was looking toward Towson in Maryland. And when she found out she would have to take out $42,000 in loans she narrowed it down to Cortland and St John. To me its a no brainer. Even though St Johns is a bit more expensive than Cortland I think St Johns is more prestigious and being close to NYC she'll have more opportunities with job placement than up in Cortland. She would also be living at St Johns as they gave her money toward room and board in addition to a generous merit scholarship. It would be a shame to throw away so much money.2 points

Thanks everyone! Today I pumped some air in the bike tires and ripped down some of the park trails away from the crowds. 15 minutes after I got my feet on the ground, I found this busted rack in a flooded section of an orchard thicket. Then I got cookin' to another area that I know always melts out sooner than the timber when I spotted another one in one of my favorite kinds of brush to look for antlers in! Can you see the antler...? ...and both of them together. They aren't very pretty, but they gave me some motivation to find some new freshies! I've given up counting dead deer this year. The good news is only one dead buck so far, but the doe/fawn count is now at least 35+ Antlers- 5 Sets- 0 Dead bucks- 1 Dead doe/fawns- ??????2 points

Nice job Joe! Keep after them and you'll have more pics than you'll know what to do with! Nice work freezing the runner. I like the first shot best too, but you cut her legs off,lol Try to keep the sun at your back when you're hunting with your camera and you'll take home more keeper shots! Keep on clickin'..2 points

I hate to see so many winter kills, sad really. I have noticed at least 10 or so on my public lands... but if most of those were doe's on your hunting area, I believe in seeing the upside to things, so your rut will be crankin next season, !1 point

Very nice find that's a heck of a shed. He would look really nice on the wall i hope you find the right side and your sister gets a crack at him this year.1 point

Nah, we never give up. Went back out early this morning and got caught up in deer movement. Sat and watched 7 for a good hour walking around the edge of the woods eating , I believe to be wild strawberry leaves. One had pretty good velvet antlers showing already. Also found a neighbors bolt with half a broadhead blade still in it.1 point

He only just started his second term, but New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is already looking ahead to a possible third term. New York State Board of Elections records show Cuomo's campaign committee has changed its name to "Andrew Cuomo 2018." If he's the best NY has to offer, the state has a dark future ahead. http://www.whec.com/article/stories/s3757186.shtml1 point

Shooting a barrel threaded for choke tubes WITHOUT a choke in it is a definite no-no. Perhaps you got lucky and did not damage the threads. At the very least I expect you will have to clean the lead out of the threads to screw in a choke tube. Good luck..1 point

Grow, I wasn't saying you were contradicting me. I just think it doesn't make sense for someone living close to NYC to go to a school upstate for numerous reasons, when there are a slew of schools in the NYC area to choose from. Living close to family is NEVER a bad thing from my perspective, be it when a kid attends college or when the kid turns 55 and it's the parents turn to be helped and looked after by the kid. I know American society is a mobile one, but I sure as hell would love to have my kids and possible grandkids close by when I am getting old and feeble and need some help. If they live across the country somewhere, you will not have such comforts, I can assure you. Maybe this is a selfish thought on my part, but I know that it was very gratifying for me (and my father) that I was there everyday for him when he was on his death bed, and I want to be there for my mother when it's her turn. I think some of us just take family bonds more seriously than others, so that's probably where our disconnect is on our philosophies here.1 point

my daughter went to SUNY ESF in Syracuse, we live on Long Island, about a 5-6 hour drive, she recently moved to Colorado and is doing great. I'm actually happy she moved out of here and so is she........oh, and it's actually cheaper and quicker for us to fly her home to visit every 3-4 months than it was to drive to Syracuse and visit every few months.1 point

Yeah...I'm just happy to see them go to a good home. Nothing wrong with them..It's just that I can't fit my fat ass into them anymore.1 point

I don't get to hunt during the week... distance to the office and being a busy time of year it doesn't work to hunt mornings. So that leaves weekends. It's my wife's birthday that month plus it starts to warm up and stuff is going on during the weekends... like clock work every year. I usually get around 5 mornings to hunt with little time to scout. I'm relatively young though. I try not to make mistakes but we all do. Heck half those mornings things are botched by other hunters I know walking through the middle of the dang fields. I was working a couple big toms across a field then they turned and left. turns out my uncle was struttin through the middle of the adjacent field I was in. come on! it's all good though.1 point

Yep- that had a lot to do with it. Combine that with a generally high deer population in this area and the prolonged lingering snow pack has made it very hard on last years fawns. Some of the fields have opened up here but there's still a good amount of snow in some of the woods. Finding a total of 40 dead wouldn't be too uncommon any given shed season. The only problem is, I just got started a couple weeks ago and still have a lot of ground to cover, so I don't think this is going to end any time soon. Most of what I'm finding are still pretty fresh. Carcasses don't lay around long before their picked clean here. I thought this last deer looked strange in that spread eagle position,lol1 point

I live around the block from the school. Still have a little bit of my wild side after graduating 2 years ago! I have a bunch of friends from high school that stayed in the area and currently still go to Cortland and love it. 1 of which is the captain of the soccer team First Light! small world!1 point

I have three children who have been to college. One is finishing graduate school in Montreal, one is going to graduate school in September, and one is finishing her sophomore year down at James Madison U in Virginia. They have mixed it up between public and private schools. I think you should always take advantage of the best scholarship offer your child gets. Cortland may have a reputation as a party school but I know they have a great library and my eldest's contemporaries who went there went on to graduate school and good jobs. St. John's is a great school with a great alumni network1 point

I went to St. John's, for the money it's over rated. My niece goes to cortland and really likes, she is on the soccer team. Check out Money Magazines new way of rating colleges. http://time.com/money/collection/moneys-best-colleges/ I know the people behind this and it's top notch! Good luck!! BTW that is a nice chunk of change SJU is giving her, i'm sure you are very proud!1 point

Got a chance to get out for an extended shed hunt this morning, now that the maple syrup season is over. I really enjoyed the time out there. Found shed #2 on a north sloping ditch bank. Last years shed, but we'll take it, LOL. Stuck in the mud and only showing the tips from out of the leaves that covered most of it. My camera refuses to take daylight shots, otherwise would have posted the spot.1 point

Twenty-nine years ago when I moved into my house, I found a stash of old tools in the garage. Many were rusted, some, being old and from an age and day when they made things to last, I brought many of them back to life if they could be useful to me again. One item was an old, rusted axe head in the bottom of a wooden milk crate, I took a wire wheel brush and removed all the old rust. The head was forged, and had a "Plumb" stamp on it. I knew I had something worthwhile. I took all the rust off, and refinished the metal head with cold-blue. I procured a new handle, fit the end in the axe and secured it with Acraglas, gave it a BLO finish, a coat of wax, added a hole at the end for some paracord to wrap around my wrist to keep the axe from slipping. It's sharp enough to shave with. If I change anything when this handle breaks, I'll look for a longer one, with a bit more curve to it.1 point

Went out on a windy New Years day for a few hours hunt. The shed finds have come to a grinding halt, but did manage to find a 7 " snapping turtle shell, which I guess, would be illegal to keep. Through that one back. Continued walking, being driven by the thirst for antler gold and came across a nice old filet knife in it original case. Judging by the rust on the blade, I would guess it was dropped sometime during this past firearms season. A critter had started chewing on the sheath. Not sure why someone would carry this type of knife. One thing I've noticed this year, I'm stumbling onto increase bedding areas. The deer are using heavier leaved areas, which are extremely dry, for this time of the year. Maybe seeing 27 deer, last day of muzzleloader season had something to do, LOL. Known bedding areas, I like to stay out of till March or so. Had some late evening activity in the chicken house. Grabbed first weapon handy, which turned out to be a muzzleloader. Shot my first red fox of the year, chicken in mouth. Nice large prime fox. Something had bitten it's right ear off, and had pellets in it's back, that were turning green. Weighed 9 lbs. I skinned both and through'em in the freezer. Might just make a decent mount someday.1 point
