I live in the burbs of mississippi, but we border quite a bit of land. Similar to NY, our bird numbers have been down. We have a 3 bird limit in the spring but you cannot shoot jakes. Seeing this site this morning made my day.

So how high do you want your taxes to be? The simple fact is, proper management would cost big bucks for the DEC to do on their own. The department is simply not configured to be able to do it. What would need to be done is the wildlife management portions of the department should be seperate from the rest that deal with pollution, etc. and become its own entity with its own funding. Politics should be kept out of it for the most part, and the department should have control over the game laws and regulations without having to make every change go through the state legislature. Then, this state might set itself up to be able to manage things better than they do now. They would still need the cooperation of co-ops, hunting clubs, landowners and hunters to get things done though. All of that would be at a cost though, more tax dollars, because we all know Albany isnt going to curtail their spending on handouts and political perk programs to fund a new department for wildlife.

I'm new here. What's a profile view?

I decided to build a woodshed to hold my firewood. The rubbermaid prefab shed I used to use can no longer support the loads of wood I stacked causing the walls to bow out creating large gaps and allowing rain and snow to come in. So this year I decided to build a wood shed. With the help of my son and his soon to be Eagle Scout friend we build the base, floor and posts last weekend. Today I plumbed the posts and secured them with 10' pressure treated 2 x 4's. Next weekend the T1-111 siding will be going up and the roof will hopefully be completed, leaving the doors for another weekend.

Week or at least few days . So take care out there and keep an eye on your pets..especially the older ones....Looks like summer has arrived late or Dog days have started early. Either way, I just may get some ripe tomatoes and a pepper or two after all.

I love my Shepherds so easy to train loyal to the max. I do not enjoy walking dogs on leads So I train mine to walk a pace behind me unless given the OK..then they know to stay in eye sight. I have specific voice and hand commands I teach them. I will not tolerate a deer chaser and they need to know what animals are off limits for a hunt and kill...and yes they are great hunters actually and mine have been unsurpassed vole killers. Today once again Angel made me proud...coming back on a wooded trail,trying to stay out of the sun...eeggads!, she was about 30 yrds in front of me and a fawn just jumped right out in front of her and froze.I mean a couple of feet. She went right into a Shepherd stance and then looked over her shoulder at me...fawn still standing there....I shook my head no and gave the return signal. She never even hesitated and turned away from that fawn...As she got closer she went into the aren't I a good girl wiggle and I showered her with hugs, praise and even a peck on her head. We then turned down a longer trail back..... leaving the fawn just standing still in the shadows....If they could just breed one that wouldn't shed 24/7!

#1 is deer... fill my freezer with the meat for my family.... #2 turkey... I love hunting them and playing the game... don't need to drop the hammer to have fun either... I've called them in and let them walk away just to keep playing the game..

Deer and then turkey simply because of the feeling/experience I get with one approaching and the sense of accomplishment that comes with punching those tags. Squirrel is fun, but it never provides the adrenaline dump. I enjoy it for different reasons. Not big into duck/goose but that is probably due to the overlap with deer hunting being a focus. Pheasant hunting with a dog seems like something I would enjoy, just never have had a chance to pursue it, especially knowing the commitment it takes to have a good bird dog.

Since you're new, look for a bow with a brace height of 6 3/4" or greater. They will typically be more forgiving. Hate to say it, but if you have a Dicks, Gander, or Bass Pro near you hit one up. Only reason I say this is because they typically carry several different brands of bows for you to shoot. I would advise not purchasing one there as most of the guys in their pro shops are hacks. If you have an archery pro shop nearby stop and see what they have. Archery talk is a great place to buy a bow if you're experienced. Don't rush into a purchase. Like everyone else has said, you need to shoot bows, several bows, and you'll know when you find the right one.

Honestly you can sit in your tree stand and see tons of squirrels and just plink them with the 22....lots of fun and tasty......Rabbits I will never again take the 22 as I said above shotgun from here on out.

Not real concerned about the hunter part. I myself am protecting an investment and in reality have the law on my side. This talk of some saying you cant just kill them and reduce the numbers is just plain hogwash. if you are on your property enough and kill on sight the numbers will drop to about nill. If you are seeing them in numbers,you are seeing them in daylight and you hear multiple packs yipping back and forth to each other from different corners of your property you probably have a problem. After that you will see your wildlife go by the wayside.

Yeah, the garden is loving it. Me, not so much. It didn't used to bother me, but I seem to like it less each year. I try not to complain too much though. In the blink of an eye, I'll be shoveling snow again. Good luck with your tomatoes, and peppers.

What place east of the MS or reasonable midwest states (meaning sustainable) offer draws for whitetails at state level or per WMU? I do believe that total is zero, and probably for good reason.

Could it be that with news traveling faster, and further and the ease at which you get it, you are just hearing about these things more than you used to? Crime rates are down, etc but many people keep saying the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Just something to think about.

12 gauge for rabbits, 22 for squirrels. Rabbits will run so there's really no way around the shotgun. Squirrels, I just hate picking out pellets. 22 double lung or head shots makes cleaning up a lot easier. You'll lose some squirrels during the fall because they won't give you a clear open shot or they're not sitting still but hunting isn't always about getting the kill every single time. One of my good hunting and fishing buddies ( another old fat guy) and I decided to fish Keuka this morning for lake trout. The lake is frozen except for the southern end..It's still open water from Hammondsport up to Two Mile Point. We launched my buddy's 16 foot Tracker at the Motel in Hammondsport and started checking spots on the depth finder that had produced fish in the past. After about an hour of searching, we hit the mother lode...Fish stacked up near bottom in about 135 feet of water near the east side. We started vertical jigging , using 1 ounce diamond jigs and light spinning gear. The fish climbed all over them... From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, we boated 45 legal size lakers, the biggest being around 5 pounds...It was almost nonstop action. We kept our legal limit of 10 fish, and quit simply because our arms got tired from jigging and playing fish... Awesome morning...

Another site I'm on has a ground hog contest going...some of the guys are just hammering the hogs getting some big ones....I have trail cam pics of one that has been hanging in the clover plot right infront of the blind...thinking of getting the cross bow out for a run...that way I don't have to clean the gun...well may take the 22 down,,it would be a very close shot...

Nice! I built one like it for my little hunting shack. Same idea, only I built the high side against an outside wall, so the water would run off and left the front open. It holds about two and a half face cord. Keep us updated on your progress.

I am a meat-hunting killer so my likes follow my stomach mostly. There is nothing I would rather eat than venison so that is #1 when it comes to hunting. It just offers the best combination of quality and quantity plus provides other valuable "side-benefits". I don't care too much about antlers and 2.5 year old bucks are #1 on my hit-list. Does slow me down butchering as I need to trim off all the extra fat. Older bucks are not as tasty and younger ones don't provide sufficient quantity. To me, fishing is the same as hunting, all about killing and eating. Although technically its not "hunting", I devote about equal time to the pursuit of smallmouth bass as I do deer. We are especially blessed here in NY to have some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the world, making it no problem to gather up good quantities of those fish for the table which are unbeatable if properly prepared. Again, I am not into targeting real big bass, keeping only 12-18 inchers for the table. I combine my two favorite outdoors pursuits by taking 95% of my bass on lures I make from deer hair. It is so much cheaper and more effective that way than bait or store-bought lures, plus making them lures is a good way to fight "cabin-fever" in bad weather. Some other game I like to hunt includes grouse and squirrel. Both are great on the table but just don't offer the quantity to get them in the same league as deer. I have no use at all for wild turkey which tastes like "cardboard" to me. Rabbit is not bad, but less tasty than squirrel and harder for me to get in sufficient quantity to make a meal.

Our dog is half Shepard, half hound dog, also scary smart. He always looks at you for permission to chase a bun bun or squirrel ,he waits til you say ok and returns the second he hears you call him back no matter how close he is to catching the creature.

Years ago I watched my father in law feed deer Friehoffers chocolate chip cookies, right out his had. One buck actually took a cookie that my FIL was holding between his teeth..The deer (5 or six of them) started getting pushy. The old man had to leave some cookies on the ground and make a run for it.

if you're accurate i wouldn't care if you shot standing on your head. Too many times we look at pitchers, jump shooters or QB and judge them by our traditional ideas of form. If you're good, you're good and that's all that matters when you've got a deer at 20 yards.

Yup, that is why I was wondering what was going on. I guess I really don't have a preference either way. I am fine with it staying the way it is, or ok if they allow rifles. Just another reason to buy more guns!!!!!

The plain jane 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 garden fertilizer works just fine. No need for fancy stuff if you can't get it. A soil test is a great idea, but, if you put down 2-3 bags of the fertilizer and 6 to 8 bags of pelletized lime you'll be doing very well. I'd put the lime down now, and wait a week or two before planting the plot. Lime needs time, pelletized is quicker. IF you're planting really small seeds like a gallon sized amount of seeds per acre, like clover, then save 2 bags of fertilizer. Divide up the clover or whatever small seed per bag, then mix it in well. It's a ton eaiser to get an even coat of seed with much more volume. I like enough lime mixed in to make 2 passes, incase a spot got missed. Handheld spreaders work much better in smaller rough plots than wheeled ones. The ones with the canvas bag. They hold about a half bag of fertilizer or lime, maybe a bit more. When spreading the lime initially w/o the seed. Lime is important, its really not much different than fertilizer. Don't skimp out on it. I put 2 bags of lime per every bag of fertilizer when I am maintaining plots. IF you can get manure, let the pile sit. Put a bag or two of lime on it too. Coyotes and turkeys will pick through the manure. Not sure if it's legally baiting, but it can be bait like..... The manure will have weeds, but the horses eat plants that deer also like and that you'll buy seed to grow. Also, a bit of weeds in a food plot is not a bad thing. Deer enjoy those "weeds" and birds rely on those weeds for food too. I'd add a bit of rye, oats, or wheat. Don't confuse rye with ryegrass. Incase the plot is slow to grow or doesn't grow certains plants, those cereal grains will have a decent bit for the deer to eat. I really like plotspike forage feast. Don't seed it too deep if you get a good till on the plot.

Shotgun for rabbit and squirrel, especially since the closest area for me to hunt is no guns until Nov, the next area (Stewart) is no rifles -period. 7 1/2 or 6's are good for rabbit and squirrel, and if pheasant is around, 6's do well for them too. Head-shots are great if you can get them, Just don't shoot a rabbit 10 feet away or less with 7 1/2's. makes a big hole and a bloody mess to carry around. Not enough distance to allow the shot spread out at all. At least that wasn't my rabbit, that was my dad's bloody messy to carry out. My sister was our dog for rabbit hunting, until she realized she was just there to kick the brush for us. She really couldn't shoot anyway and was too young to hunt at the time.

The idea behind a one buck rule has nothing to do with how many guys take multiple bucks, its to make hunters more choosy on what buck they shoot. I know of many guys that whack the first buck (usually a yearling) they see then hold out for Mr Big later on, which doesnt usually happen. If they only have one buck tag, they might not whack that yearling. Not all would do that, but Id bet alot would, and it would be by their own choice, not someone shoving ARs down their throat.

Maybe you don't have a problem in your area, or perhaps you choose not to see it, but doubting that others do have a problem in their area, is blind denial. Define it simply as an over abundance of coyotes, far beyond the carrying capacity of the area, causing a great deal of ecological harm by their presence. They may disappear on their own in time, but only after they have devastated the area.

Their was legislation introduced in Albany changing the required muzzleloader license to bow hunting privalage. Two sponser s to the bill. I don't know the outcome of this. I don't seem to be able to post the link due to Next book. Personally, I think a crossbow safety coarse with crossbow license should be adopted.

The thing is, no matter how many gun laws they pass, even if they were to abolish the second ammendment. It would not stop some deranged individual from getting a gun and creating havoc. Stricter gun laws may make it just a bit harder for criminals and deranged individuals to get their hands on a firearm. But they will get them easily enough. The only people that suffer with the strictest gun laws, are the law abiding citizens. What a shame and what a travesty.

From Rob's original post , I thought shooting someone else's gun not being okay pertained only to Pistols . Unless the pistol was on your permit you couldn't legally handle it . Prior to having guns registered when you bought them there was no registration . So , if the 22 that I bought 60 years ago was being used by my son , how would anyone know who the owner is / was ?
