I once had a lady drive through some state land I was hunting on opening day banging pots and pans and yelling to try to scare off deer. After driving through two more times every hour or so, the DEC officer I called the first time stopped her and proceeded to give her a ticket. Watched it all from where I was set up in the woods. Didn't get a deer that year, but I think I had just as much satisfaction from seeing her get the ticket as I would have taking a nice buck.3 points

Sure, I'll play... it may help someone avoid an avoidable catastrophy. In my early high school days, me and a few buddies were hanging out at his house while his parents were out for the night. We found his old mans weed and beers in the garage before we headed up to our hangout in my buddies room to properly dispose of them the way young high school boys do. After all our buzzes kicked in, my buddy disappeared and came back with his old mans pistol he kept hidden in a shoebox under his bed. We all drunkenly and stoned handled and admired it for a bit before passing it on to our next friend in the circle. When the gun finally came around to me, I remember aiming it at my pal and trying to pull the trigger but it wouldn't "click" for some reason.... I don't know why or how we didn't try to figure it out at the time, but in the end we finally figured out the damn thing was LOADED with the safety on the whole time. I almost killed my best friend at the time because his dad was irresponsible in regard to safe storage of his weapons with kids in the house and our own stupidity. I think about that a lot now whenever I pick up any gun I'm unfamiliar with or see someone I know storing their firearms in a lazy manner. The consequences can be life altering for everyone, so I'm not afraid to share that story whenever I see a gun owner that has as much common sense as a inebriated high school youth. That experience has stuck with me for almost 30yrs now even though it could have ended much worse. I'm thankful it didn't, but I'm still not sure who I'm angrier at till this day...... myself for being young and dumb and intoxicated.... or his old man for being oblivious to what could have happened leaving a recipe for disaster so accessible to us all.3 points

The OP wasn't about reducing inventory . It was about getting an employee discount and selling to make a profit . If it was my store and someone did that , they would be looking for a new job . Unethical !3 points

For those of you not familiar with the term, it means taking photos with a point and shoot camera through a spotting scope or binoculars. I took these photos of Calliope Hummingbirds last week in Idaho with a cheap point and shoot and a very high quality scope. The bison photo was taken with the same equipment. The other photos I've taken over the years, mostly for documentation purposes.2 points

I finally got out to shoot my 2 new Ruger Americans today. One in 25-06 and the other in .22Mag. Impressive. After some tweaking, the 06 shot under1"at 100yds. The 22Mag was stacking them at 75yds. If anyone is on the fence about buying one,,,go for it.They shoot.2 points

Part of the drop in my book is that they knew the antlerless was going into effect, potentially increasing the success rate of DMPs. Likely not all of the reasoning, but I suspect it factored into their decisions. So, next year, they can say the percent went from roughly 14% (ballparking the avg in those areas) to XX%, touting it as a major victory to leave it intact for future years until "further notice" or as a way to further spin their agenda to bring in guns if it doesn't go up significantly. For as stupid as they look publicly, behind the scenes, they reflect the smartness characteristic of Cuomo's administration. Don't read that as Cuomo being "good"....that admin just knows their crap when it comes to political navigating.2 points

Oh, I got plenty of those too,lol Most recently, turkey hunting with my sister this spring. We'd set up several times one morning and we weren't having much luck. We decided to call it quits early and started heading back home when I stopped dead in my tracks, looked at her and asked...."didn't I bring my gun along today..?" She said "You had it earlier this morning" Ahhhh crap, we made our way around to 5 or 6 of our last set ups where I finally found my shotgun laying in the leaves, lol I'm so used to paying such close attention to not leave my camera behind throughout the year, that Ii forget half of my other crap when I bring anything "extra".... like a gun for instance,lol2 points

If it was a corporation they'd be paying the ultimate price. But who holds the government accountable? As an environmental engineer I've studied these plums. There is no fixing them. Even money cannot solve them.2 points

Funny Larry , Phade, I guess I am not alone in my willingness to inconvenience myself more for a big buck than a doe. I shoot my share of does. I'm not going make excuses or somehow apologize for passing does at times when I'd shoot a buck early in season at inopportune times. Hard to figure there are hunters out there who wouldn't understand this. But that's fine. hunting is supposed to be fun. Follow the rules and enjoy yourself.2 points

I didnt see anyone say anything about not caring if the meat spoils, I saw someone say they wouldnt mind the work it takes to deal with making sure the meat doesnt spoil as much if it was a good buck vs a doe. He didnt say he doesnt want to shoot a doe, he said he would rather shoot a doe at a time when he doesnt have to rush so quickly to get the meat taken care of. Honestly, I agree with him to a point. It doesnt matter to me if its bow or gun season in that respect either. If its an evening and I have to work the next day, and its warm out, Im not shooting anything less than a big buck either. Again, will one of you guys that seem to be siding with the DEC please answer the question of what difference does it make if a doe is killed during bow or gun season?2 points

A round or two doesn't warrant gun cleaning unless you are shooting black powder or old military ammo with corrosive primers.Rimfires can be fired many hundreds of rounds without cleaning with no ill effect. Even high velocity centerfires can be fired dozens of rounds without need for cleaning. in many cases, wear from the cleaning rod is worse than leaving the bore dirty, within reason.. Take your .22 or your shotgun or your .243 and blow hell out of that cheeky rodent...<<grin>>...2 points

I have an American in .308, I love it. The price on them is amazing too, I paid $309 for it new, shipped to my FFL, and it was a limited edition camo.1 point

Couple years ago took out my grandfather's scoped deer rifle to do a hunt in the snow. Saw nothing but snow and few tracks. Slung the rifle over my shoulder and headed back. Slipped on large embedded rock that was snow covered and fell backwards. Yes the scoped gun ended up between me and the rock. As luck would have it, just a couple scrapes on the barrel and stock and snow stuffed all around the scope. 20 years ago was tree-stand hunting deer. Nice size buck pops up, took two shots, It disappears down a slope, looked like I mis-judged the distance and missed. 20 minutes later a smaller buck pops up from under the brush 15 yards away. Take a shot, saw it was hit watched it as it tracked similar path the other deer took but turned a bit more east and saw it drop. That is when I tried to unload and it was jammed with another slug in the chamber. Luckily we had FRS radios with us, so I called that the deer was down but I have a loaded jammed gun while still in the stand and need help. My uncle was in the next stand over, so handed the gun down and he used his leatherman to get it open to empty it. Almost had to walk it across a dual-highway, as the reloader mechanism broke and was difficult to get it open. It was in the shop for two years - hard to get parts for a 16 gauge semi-auto.1 point

That was actually my point. There is no reason to do what they have done other than spin. antlerless take increased 4+% from 2013 to 2014 based on their 2014 report in 8H they need to show a BIG increase in %filled to prove they knew what they were doing. if they show the real numbers the totals won't lie, whatever the % is calculated from.1 point

I guess mine would have to be sticking the end of the barrel into the ground and plugging it up with dirt, simple fix though, remove the barrel and swing it like a baseball bat and watch the dirt plug fly.1 point

Might not be worst "gun handling" mishap but my worst gun related mishap happened in my mentors reloading room. My reloading mentor was showing me how to reload and after a range session we decided the load was not the best and proceeded to pull some bullets. He gave me a hammer type bullet puller and we put the cartridge in it. I started to hammer it on the ground, BANG!!!!! My heart stopped at the bang, and time was suspended while I waited for the main charge to go off and explode. It never came. After we caught out breath, and got our hearts going again, we determined that he had some loose primers on the floor and against all odds, I hit one with the hammer bullet puller! Taught me to keep a clean orderly gun/reloading room, I can tell you. _____________ Worst gun handling mishap might be when I blew my knee out during an icy deer season hunt and had to use my Rem 7600 as a cane to crawl home. The stock got all tore up. I keep it out of loyalty, it got me home, I'm keeping it scratches and all. note-three shots in the air only told the neighbors I was doing a lot of shooting, lot of good that did me.1 point

Many years ago, my buddy saved all summer to buy a brand new Ithaca Deerslayer. Opening day came and about mid morning I heard him shoot down the ridge from where I was. After an hour or so and not seeing anything myself, I went down to where he was. Sure enough he had a buck down and was so happy with his new gun. He made a perfect 75 yard shot in a small opening in a swamp. So we get ready for the long drag up hill and I grab his pack and gun as well as my gear to bring up the hill, and he says don't drop my gun! I made two steps before slipping on the muddy slope and sticking the barrel about four inches in the mud and bent the crown of the barrel. He has never let me forget it!!!1 point

I don't feed birds during the warm months because of bears. A pair of wrens decided to take up residence in a squirrel proof feeder. I left a camera on it while I was away. These are a few of the shots I found when I returned. Note the bird on the feeder. One beam? Momma wren with food for her babes.1 point

What haven't I done to my poor little browning...Mr B picked me up on our first 4 wheeler ...going across the field he hit a bump and managed to pop a wheeling ..off the back I went. Tire grabbed my boot as I did pulled it off (shedding it) and my gun went barrel first straight into the ground...packing it with mud and dirt...then I have tripped several times filling barrel. I had it slung over my back and hit a patch of ice. feet straight out and landed on my back, gun between me and ground...fought a buck off with it and a couple of times had guys knock it over at camp...So ask me why I don't use a scope...1 point

I'm on a predominately southern forum... those guys are set up for it, lets not be naive here they have bigger and better processors and prices...these guys do not even gut their deer they take them to the processors and it's all done right there. When I was down in Georgia they were selling tractor/tailor/plot packages along the roads like re have fruit and veggie stands here in the summer...they were also selling walk-ins. I couldn't help but think us northern hunters just playing at it...down there it's just life....all these years and the fact most hunters have gone suburban. We still have to scramble to find a decent processor that won't have our deer lying in a pile with umpteen others in 60 degree weather for a day. It's take them in and hope you get back what you actually handled and shot...1 point

You want us to read minds and establish motives. We do not have enough information to establish the motives behind why they chose to put the deer population management on only the backs of the bowhunters and muzzleloaders. So there is no "yes" or "no" answer. I'm not sure why that is such a hard concept for you to understand. You may not like that answer, because it doesn't validate your assumptions, but really that is the answer. No hate card, just my opinion. So try to control yourself when I offer the opinion that you asked for.1 point

I already have. Try to pay attention and keep up. Repeating one more time for those that are having trouble understanding, the real options for cutting deer populations lie in the more efficient gun season, if the population cuts really are the goal. Pretty simple concept actually.1 point

I think grow is talking about the 2 color pics. Same day, but don't look like the same buck. One has a thicker rack diameter then the other. Also a few more inches.1 point

No..That was selfish and unethical…IMHO. Say you had a shotgun that you knew was worth at least $500. A friend of yours, who had done you a favor, really wanted the gun. You let him have it for $300. You find out that the next day he sold it for $500. Ethical??? Really? You're not pissed and no longer trust this person????? Okay.1 point

And on top of it all they can't even get the hunting handbook out to hunters who may want one the day that licences go on sale....what a joke.1 point

You know NYC came a long way it took a Conservative to clean up the mess made by DemoCRAPS and now a Socialist to put it back to the $hitter. Than take a look at NYS How many Crimails came out of the DemCRAPPERS Assembly and Senate.Than we have a joker Gov: Mr.Safe Act Andy Himself running the State into the shitter, faster than a 90 yr old on Exlax. Than we have the Junkie Obama who Took America So Far Backwards on every Front. He has tried everything to ruin the greatest Nation on earth. So Now do you really think that Bernie is the Answer to the Problem? OK1 point

I don't think I owe anyone or DEC an explanation if I decide to pass on a doe and shoot a buck. Any time of the season as long as I am within the regulations. As far as the DEC, they have their head in the sand and have no idea of how many deer are in the area I hunt. With my boots on the ground, I do have an idea. I have no problem shooting does. But given the CHOICE, I will shoot a buck. I will always give another hunter a hearty hand shake, smile, thumbs up and way to go for ANY deer they have killed. Buck, doe small or large. So don't crucify me for being a horn hunter. We need to respect the fact that we all hunt for different reasons.1 point

Some people are very angry with America, feeling they've gotten a raw deal in life. They want an evil enemy to blame for their troubles and economic status. These people are very susceptible to the propaganda from Leftist Socialists because they believe their plans will make life better for them. They are swallowing the lies with gusto because they want to believe them. God forbid, their hopes for socialism in America are ever realized. They will not like what they asked for and will not be able to rescind the decision once it takes hold. Anyone who really thinks it's a better system should move to a country that suffers under that system and live it for at least a year. They will learn more in one year than any college could teach them in four.1 point

Pretty cool! I have a pair of wrens that has been coming back for three years now. I enjoy watching them "hunt" back and forth from the woods to their "house" in my electric riser on the shed. Who needs feeders!1 point

It isn't deer proof either. They will empty it in a night. Those things hanging beneath it are weights to close it at night.1 point

Steve863, Who are you kidding? "Skinned, quartered, and iced?" You forgot about giving the deer ample time to expire, tracking blood in the dark, gutting it, and dragging it. Usually all by myself. And thanks for twisting my words. You literally twisted my words to mean almost the opposite of what I meant. That takes skill. Ever run for office?1 point

What you're describing is Fascism, not Socialism. And you're right, it's been in place since the 1930's. Fascism involves private ownership of business, but with government control. The ever-increasing power of the regulatory agencies are shifting that concept of 'ownership' toward the government. Socialism involves government ownership of business with some semblance of private control (an absurd notion to anyone capable of thought),but basically, a business owner has the right to do what the government/owner tells them to do. The federal government today runs this country. That's not how it's supposed to work, and I'm not going to vote for anyone who thinks this is a good thing.1 point

It really does boil down to what works best for you... if going in early works.. then that's what you ought to be doing.. there are no real rules for how to deer hunt... deer are different, people are different... your experience will be different than others... do what keeps it enjoyable for you.1 point

I used to get in an hour before light, because that is what I was taught, saw a LOT of sunrises. Got cold a lot earlier, tripped over rocks a lot in the dark, fell into a couple creeks, and got poked in the eye with tree branches also. Eventually, I came to the realization that it really didn't matter, now if I hunt in the mornings, I'm in my stand right at sunrise.1 point

I use to always be in my stand 1 hr before it starts to get light until I realized there was no point in it. Now I walk in when it is starting to get light. I guess it depends on your stand location......1 point
