  1. Let him walk, just double the amount of corn and put out another block to help him grow as much as possible between now and next season...

  2. Well I invited my neighbor over to shoot bows tonight and brought up the whole baiting scenario to see what he would say. He was completely against baiting with piles of corn and apples, didn't mention anything about salt licks. So, like the good person I am, I brought it up. He admitted to me that he uses salt licks solely out of season to get the deer more minerals for antler growth and for trail cam pics. Even admitted that he had one out right now, but was pulling it this weekend since they're done with antler growth. I wasn't sure what to say...so I asked him if he knew it was illegal to use them. He said, I know I can't use them during the season. I followed up with, according to NYS, you can't use them any time of year, not even to just get a few pictures. He was in awe. He was certain that he was perfectly legal by removing it before the season started. So I guess this is where the misinterpretation of the law or the he said/she said scenario comes into play. I pulled it up on my phone for him to see, he just said wow, didn't realize that. He actually got a little worried and wanted to go pull the block tonight. So if I were the type of guy that just acted on a situation before knowing the facts, I would have gotten him in a heap of trouble. He genuinely seemed disturbed about the whole situation and asked me if I wouldn't say anything to anyone...too late, haha. After talking with him and finding out his situation, I am glad I was able to approach it in such a manner that didn't point fingers at him. He did show me pictures (with salt block clearly in photos), but only had a few small bucks and mostly does on his cameras. Let's just say that made me happy.

  5. Saw a cell phone pic of this big guy in a friends yard in Suffolk, did a little scouting and set up my trail cam. If I get a chance at this monster I might just fall outta my stand.

  6. Id like to see: -backtags go away in the SZ -year round coyote hunting -sunrise and sunset rules go to 30 mins before and 30 mins after -1 buck rule -no more either sex tags -all antlerless tags be for designated WMU -crossbows in all of bow season -allow baiting in high population zones -minimum hunting age lowered or removed

  7. True but some of us do a heck of a job with our own properties and have some hunting just like those other states. We have mature bucks chasing does in the wide open bean and cornfield, In broad daylight every year. We have so many people stop and say..Hey there we were wondering if we could hunt? There is a huge buck running around down near that pond right now! Ny can be a great hunting state for most parts but other parts of the state never will be. Just the way it is in most all states. The part i dont get is people complaining about poor hunting in their area. A 2 hour trip in many directions will put hunters in deer rich areas with great hunting. The old saying of..(You get out what you put in) holds true in most cases.

  11. Bingo!! I would absolutely report any baiting that is being done on public land I hunt and any other activity that is a safety concern. What people do within the confines of their own posted signs is their business,,,,,,well, to a degree anyway.

  13. seriously though he's young. much bigger in there. it's bow only. with the way the habitat is with all the scrub oak brush and fact you can't cut anything it's harder to get a good treestand location and real tough hunting from the ground. I can't believe you haven't gotten caught. I'd stay out of that area, cease baiting, and remove your camera. if you want PM me and i'll tell you were good spots are but don't bait. you're guaranteed to get caught by one of the Kurts. a lot of people through there too like hikers, hunters, etc. that's why I don't use cams or hangon stands in there either. too much traffic. many local LEOs hunt the area too and are protective of the hunting. they'll sure as heck try to get cuffs on you.

  14. A 14 year old kid getting into hunting has way more things to distract him/her than a 10,11, or 12 yo.

  15. I just had to laugh at this post. Do your self a favor and take this mess down. There are literally people that will turn you in for that on this site. On another note. Be serious when saying you have no clues about bait laws. Half the places that sell the salt blocks and what not have signs right there saying it is illegal to feed deer.

  17. Thank you ! Most states allow it now. NY once again must know something all those states don't , the thought I guess is you'll shoot a deer with it , if I was a poacher it would be with my .270 not a pocket .380 or short barrel 9. Heck I group better with my bow at 30 yards than my handguns anyway.

  18. Most rubs now are for removing velvet, they are not in areas where the deer will be most of the time in season, most rub lines parallel doe trail, and are found Oct nov.,your better off looking for funnels, and staging areas inside from field edges 50 to 100 yards, rubs will seem random in them as bucks will linger and wait for darkness to enter fields, (at least the smarter older ones do )

  19. Took the kids and wife out fishing yesterday with my Dad. Since I wanted more action for the kids (6 and 13yrs old), we targeted lakers. Caught more than I could count in 2 hours including 3 triples. As soon as I set a rigger, it would fire and then the next and next. Kids got tired of reeling them in. Biggest was 14lbs. Definitely not like fighting kings and I know its a "lesser fish", but seeing the kids battle them was about as much fun as I have had fishing. Just when we were ready to start looking for kings, my wife looked a bit green from the sun and rolling water (she tends to get sea sick) so we headed in. Don't discount fishing mid-day. All this action was between 1-3pm.

  20. The old timer in our camp passed away a couple years ago. He was the first to start hunting the property in the late 70's. The first season without him was weird but as time went on we realized that it was sad but normal. I started hunting with hime when I was 15 and he was the age I am now. Now his grandson is part of our crew, along with his buddy. They are in their 20's and I don't ever see them getting sick of hunting so the tradition will live on. Kind of cool to know. The first night at camp, without the old man, we toasted the old fart so many times that none of us got up before 10 A.M. the next day. LOL!!

  24. I know a few kids that I would gladly share a stand with that are under our current age fr hunting, but then again I know a few adults that shouldn't be allowed to touch a gun either.I think there should be a "50 state general gun handling safety course" for youngsters that want to do it.I know when I went through my daughters class I realized that its almost impossible to fail unless you flat out are stupid or don't listen.Any person should be able to pass this course. Some kids aren't ready at 16 years old when some have the respect a gun deserves at 8 years old.

  27. depends on other deer i'm seeing and your time in the woods. Meaning, if you've set aside plenty of days and are capturing more mature bucks on your cams I might let him walk. But honestly that's a lot of talk. I'd probably drill him in a heartbeat.

  29. More evidence of closed loop thinking. What data or information proves people don't want to shoot does in that area? The DEC said not enough does are being shot in that area. Big difference there, Doc. The WMU DMP success percentage rate for the antlerless only areas are pretty much in the middle 30% of the bell curve - proving that not only are hunters in that area within the typical range, but that because those areas have higher DMP issuance, the success rate being in the middle means they're shooting MORE does by volume. The WMUs IDed for antlerless sit atop the WMUs for DMP harvest numbers. They need to open up the flood gates on tag management, incentivize property owners to open ground, review/remove the practice for charging for DMPs, remove the limitation on consignments (the whole idea of consignment is silly), use the right tools (which is what they are doing long-term to our dismay), and then work in other practical management practices like OBR and/or other incentive/pro-management techniques to better manage the resource and hunter retention. Instead we have buffoons in office doing what they're doing and getting people to successfully talk in circles like the answers don't exist in any appreciable form because NY is some enigma that makes it different than other states so much so that nothing learned, proven, or peer-accepted, is transferrable. My advice to those people, get over yourselves. NY is no different, the hunters are no different, and you still pull your camo britches up one leg at a time.

  30. The fact its not temporary, like logging, will make changes to their behaviors, patterns, and maybe even beds. Development is a game changer. They'll adapt just fine for the most part, but you will need to be aware of that adaptation.

  31. Cant have a single post without calling one rule change a magic bullet, or a cure all can you? I know you arent ignorant enough to really believe that anyone that knows anything about deer management would think there is such a thing. Nobody said any state is perfect, just that some other states are alot better than NY in the way they manage deer. But just keep blowing what is said out of proportion, twisting words and statements so you can try to justify your opinions. Also, you complain about proven management practices, you complain about new ideas, you say the DEC has no idea what its doing. Its gotten to the point of being just plain funny.

  34. I make no pretense that my handloads are greatly superior to factory stuff...Handloading is a hobby in itself, which I enjoy, and I get a lot of satisfaction in assembling custom loads for my rifles with MY choice of components and killing stuff with them.. Could I buy factory loads that kill game just as well as my handloads ? Hell yes !!

  37. I hunt in arguably one of the better areas for NY. I've also hunted mediocre Midwest areas (by their standards) and plenty of mid-atlantic/southern areas. Are we better than say Florida? Yes. I'll take that mediocre Midwest hunting any day of the week over NY. I also do not believe for one second we as a state are more fickle than other states' hunter populations. Southerners running dogs, Midwesterners baiting and supplemental feeding, etc. They're just as fickle as us, no better, no worse. Yet other states' entities can get stuff done.

  40. Get a few empty 2 liter soda bottles and fill w/water and freeze. Toss them in a cooler and if you connect, once you field dress, toss them in the cavity to help cool the meat.

  42. Spent Yesterday back down at the farm. Trimmed out paths to all stands at one farm. Went over to the other farm and scouted out a spot for a new double set. We looked at two areas we thought might be good, but turned out not to be, so we headed up to the North end of the property, near the area that I had an encounter with one of the really big boys on the farm last season. I already have a stand up near there, but there was an area about 100 yards from that stand where I had placed a cam this year that was showing some really good pics, and I thought there might be a spot where we could get in there with a set. As soon as we pulled into the area, up jumped a nice buck. He had some mass on him and was out past his ears with a good size body. I figured from the quick look that he is at least 3, possibly older, but Id need a better look at him. He popped right out of a spot of heavy cover that I know the bucks tend to lay up in. We started looking around and I found a nice looking Hickory, that is surrounded by 5 smaller trees for good cover and breakup, so thats where we hung our set. I can see into part of the bedding area, and cut 4 lanes, 1 into thicker cover, 1 to a known travel corridor and two into the field on either side of the point of trees. Should be a great set. Next we went around and checked the plots, all are doing great. First heres the Rape, PTT, Sugar beet plot... The DeerAg plot... After we left, I went over to a friends house and ended up making a deal on a new trailer thats heavy duty enough to haul mid size tractors and other equipment. It was a pretty fun weekend, and now Im back to work. No Labor Day vaca for this guy...

  43. Figure out how to use it to your advantage. Last thing you wanna do is piss off your neighbor over a salt lick because if your dec officer is some clown now that decides he is gonna walk in the woods every day at 730 am to see if this guy is hunting over feed. Trust me if I was him I would figure out a way to piss you off. Leave it alone

  44. Deer (especially nice bucks) wont hit a salt lick with any regularity durring daylight this time of year through late winter... I wouldn't sweat it. Tell him throw some corn out with it for extra appeal.

  45. Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year.
