  10. I think it's been more about a guy getting jumped on because he feels confident at longer ranges and has been successful. I haven't heard that gentleman say anything like what you've described above. Those saying 30 yards max.. are entitled to that decision.. as is the fella that likes practicing and shooting animals at longer distances. What he thinks is wrong is that you're trying to tell him that he shouldn't be shooting that far... that is wrong for anyone to say and I agree with him. It kills me how some don't want others telling them what size deer they can kill, but have no problem telling another hunter how far he should be shooting.

  11. So my Dad reached an agreement on price to buy land. Hopefully everything goes smooth with attorneys and a closing hopefully in the next few weeks. Then what? Would you post the land and setup tree stands (for xbows)? Or given that it is so close to deer seasons not bother yet at the risk of disturbing things right before the season? We've never used treestands for the xbow so we may buy 2 ladder stands. But again, maybe we should wait a season or two until we know exactly where best to put ladder stands? The current owner said the land has not been hunted in 5-6 years by his father who passed away last year. The property (20acres) is filled acorns everywhere. The owner said his dad used to hunt on top of a slope where deer would come up from swamps on neighboring property (115 acres - no hunting), so that's probably where we will try first. The owner also showed us which trees the turkeys roost on, etc. Thanks to the guys who helped me in the other thread regarding ATVs. As of now, we still have access to private 8 acres we have hunted since 1993 about 5-10 miles away from this new piece. So we will still hunt there a few days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. With some new hunters here to learn, I guess it's better to talk about it rather than pretend it never happened. It may even be a new hunter how hits and lost one and is now asking for suggestions to improve. I do agree that it shouldn't turn into "chum".

  17. Oh, and by the way, for all those that may be laughing at the misfortune of those bowhunters in the chosen few WMUs, I would like to bring to your attention a little quote that I found in the latest issue of NYON: "DECs deer managers at this point have not ruled out expanding the antlerless-only regulation to other units if needed." So while many have contented themselves thinking, "too bad for them, but not my problem", think again. The DEC is taking on the NYS bowhunters and it all maybe coming soon to a neighborhood near you. first the special antlerless only bow season and then followed y the threat of a early muzzleloader season crammed in. I'm thinking that the few WMUs are simply a test case to see what kind of resistance they get. The end-game is that early muzzleloader season that the DEC has been pushing for since 2004. This is all just their devious path to shoving that into bow season.

  18. So, now everyone gets a trophy in hunting too... First of all a deer is NOT a trophy it is just a deer... trophies are given to the winners of a competition... hunting is not a competition. Well maybe a competition between you and the deer... but when the deer wins he doesn't get a trophy so I don't think that counts

  20. Every deer should be special to the hunter. Every deer is a trophy! Only a loser would put down any deer a hunter legally decides to kill. Be Proud Of What You Shoot!

  21. There is more to life than guns. I miss family and I want my kids to grow up the same way I did. Laws, especially gun laws will change for good or for bad. Part of the problem in NY is that no one really stands up and says NO MORE. Most people just take it and leave or bicker on the internet but won't actually fight for their rights. People need to keep protesting in Albany like they did a few years ago. We can't just have one or two good shows and be done with it. Has to be lots of people regularly. Start voting those that voted for the SAFE Act out of office. Make noise, don't give up.

  23. Even with practice and making sure everything is right, sometimes things just go wrong. As much as we would like to see none of those threads it's part of hunting, not every deer is recovered and for those that say they kill everything they shoot well you probably have not shot that much.

  25. There is no "giving". a deer has no emotion or generosity. It was killed and life was "taken"

  26. Guess I have to rename my room with mounts in it to the memories room? Stop being so politically correct, its just a deer, if someone considers it a trophy why rain on their parade? I consider every deer I have taken a trophy and will never put anyone down for shooting a deer that makes them happy. That mount allows me to tell the story, explain how beautiful the animal was and show others the beauty of a nice mount. It bring back the day it happened and allows me to relive the joy and bounty it provided. Now to be politically correct I will have to be a memories hunter vs a trophy hunter? No I make no excuse for the hunting I do. I am a trophy hunter and will not change to a memories hunter. And I do not fell any regret for being one.

  27. Depends on visibility and whether you need to make a statement, but every 30-40yds is generally good. In the thick stuff and where I feel like trespassers are likely, closer.

  32. Your right lets get rid of the term trophy in hunting and also dump the 3 points on one side rule!! let everybody go out and have a enjoyable day afield and take your kids and grandkids out to show them the freedom of hunting. I would just bet that any deer you shoot with them would be very special and rememberd for life no trophy needed

  33. Every deer I have ever killed has been "special" to me. But some more than others, because of a history with that deer, or something unique about the hunt or the deer itself. That stands out in my mind more than others. I have never put a tape to any of the antlers of the bucks I have been fortunate enough to kill. Even though I'm sure more than a couple would make P&Y, for whatever that's worth. To me numbers and tallys don't mean anything! I can look at a picture and vividly recall details of past hunts and deer that were killed many years ago. But there are a few, that just stand out in my mind more than others. And not just because of what they had or didn't have on their head.

  36. Every year about a month before the opener I buy 3-4 ratchet straps and replace any that look questionable or frayed. Stand inspection at the same time. Is that a gauruntee no, but it still gets done. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

  38. Post it immediately after closing, and get a couple of light weight single man ladder stands. They wont be exceptionally comfortable, but they are very easy to move by yourself. Do some scouting, and set the stands, then watch what unfolds, and move your stands accordingly. This year will be more like scouting with your crossbow in hand, and this winter should be heavy scouting, while the sign from the fall is still visible. By the time season starts next year, you should be pretty well prepared. Save buying bigger, more permanent stands for down the road. JMO. I would also start wind mapping it right off the bat. Bring some bubble stuff out with you, and blow bubbles in different areas under different wind conditions, and watch where the bubbles go. Take lots of notes. The better you know how the wind will act on the place, the smarter you can hunt it in the future. Congrats to your dad and you on the land!

  39. Just that.. a special deer that means something to me... I don't really have one that is more special than the others.. they each mean something different to me... each special in their own way for different reasons... I don't ever look at them as trophies just successes. I'm all about the stories behind them and each one has it's own story.

  40. A gift? Who knows. Actually, if the deer 'wins' it does get a trophy, it's called life. At least for a day or so. A trophy isn't just about competition. A trophy can mean different things to different people. A recovering w/e can deem each week, month, or year a trophy. Someone who was told they will never walk again and did might consider the wheel chair they were confined to a trophy. So if the hunter who takes his first doe or spike wants to consider that a trophy who are we to disagree? If someone wants to call every fish they catch, deer they kill, rabbit they kill, or fly they sway a trophy so be it. To me, a trophy is anything in life you are proud of. Just my 3 cents.

  41. Well I would have no problem putting up a couple treestands and posting the property. Try to do most of that with in a day or two and then don't go back in the property till you hunt. I think don't think deer really start feeling pressure until they start seeing you consecutively.

  43. This thread wasn't about changing anyone's mind... it was about what YOU think your effective range is. I pretty sure the OP knew that the answers would not be all the same.

  45. Get a muff and some hot packs, and forget about gloves. The only pair I use are some thin ones that I have for bow season. Once it gets cold, I just use my muff.
