Before you head out again I would take the arrow(s) your shot and try to find out why they went high. Take the same arrow and broad head setup, try to simulate the shot to see where the arrow is hitting. If it was from a tree stand, you may want to try shooting the arrow from an elevated spot to test. If the arrow is hitting fine when you test it, then you know your doing something wrong during the moment of truth. High shots are usually attributed to not bending at the waist during the shot which tends to make the shot go high. Good luck.

This story takes place in southern westchester a non hunting area, and don't worry no one is hunting this deer. It all started about 5 years ago when I was sitting on my mothers back porch for a late summer BBQ I looked out into the woods and saw a massive rack bouncing up and down, I looked a little closer a noticed that it was a huge 12 pointer. As the deer began to walk it became very clear that he was not using his front right leg at all. He held it tucked under his body and just kind of hobbled around on 3 legs. Fast forward a year and one of my good friends buys a house 3 houses down from my mother. He tells me a story about this 3 legged buck that has been hanging around his back yard. This imeadiatly jogs my memory to the previous year and my sighting of the deer. We talk about how shocked we are that this deer can survive like that. The following year he turns up again eating from some corn scattered around for my friends back yard chicken, this time he is a 10 point and his horns are a lot thinner a shadow of what they once were. Over the years he has turned up fall after fall antlers smaller then the year before, last year he was a frail 8 point very skinny his ribs popping out of his chest. So fast forward to last night I'm headed up the hill to visit my mother, as my head lights illuminate the lawn across the street I notice the rack a tiny basket 6 and then the distinctive walk just a little slower and more labored, it was skip, he looked so frail all his ribs exposed face pure white he just stood there and looked at me as I got out of my car, I looked back at him and nodded before walking into my mothers. I just wanted to write a tribute to this old warrior, a deer that I ounce dreamed about seeing in the woods, now on his last legs I doubt he will survive the winter, I may have to do a little suburban shed hunting this year, and keep the last set of antlers from this fantastic old buck

After 40 years I finally got a lead on a pristine Winchester 52D and put money down on it!! I fired my first round at a suburban gun club located in a bunker like building in Nassau county back when I was 12. The got me signed up with the NRA and I bought my first brick of Win. T22's. We shot Winchester 52 target rifles, I probably shot the 52b's, the better C models being reserved for the older kids in the youth division. I would sit in the little lounge reading old american hunter's and riflemen while they made plans to take their target rifles up the first of september for squirrel hunting trips up to that magical place I knew little of, the Catskills. I was too young. I also listened to them speak in hushed tones about a gun called the Winchester 52D, the holy grail of target rifles for them. It stuck in my mind and I've kept my eye out for one ever since. I saw one or two come up for sale over the years but they were CMP destroyed releases or way too expensive (or so I thought). I'm not getting any younger, and turning back more to old wood stocked rifles, so when one in pristine condition, completely unmodified came up, I bit. I know it's old, heavy, open sighted, etc.............but it's a 52D!!!!! Can't wait to have it arrive. Like a kid at christmas all over again.

My wife and I had our first in Jan. can't believe he will be turning 1 year soon. I decided to hang my euro mounts about his crib. Before you guys jump all over me these are lagged into the stud and wired 2 different ways to keep them from falling. The 2 mounts are of 120" 8 points. 1 was a huge deer for the area and the other was a case of mistaken identity.

Yep they have layed down at least 10 full tanker trucks of shite in the upper lease field and now they are awaiting more to start next to us... Other than waiting for a stiff south east wind...which will gag us for the next 2wks this is a good thing...those deer will avoid all those fielsd which is lease land and they will head to where the doe are feeding...that is us and our nieghbors to the south that has a beef hay field and standing corn... they are also spreading behind our "no doe" nieghbor that adjoins the beef farmer. It will be straight lines from our swamp south and from neighbors swamp west and south...Glad I didn't spend much time patterning them...

First off its almost 9:30...just got back I went to closer place...and lets just say the walk in wasn't quiet this morning...and I just had to leave at 8:50....the chipmunks dang near drove me out of my mind..I know a beautiful morning but between them and the oak leafs falling ...Holy cow if I was a drinker I'd half way through a bottle by now.popped over to garden stand area to pull cam... and well THANK YOU ##$$@@$@$ DEC.... Got to run still have hunting clothes on...Hope he's around tomorrow..... PS...... had a cold windy sit last night and just as I'm head to the car ...dark..... out come 5 doe...nice!...lol

1 for me...6.5 by deerage tooth testing. You start getting above 4.5 and they just don't make up a ton of the population base.

According to some, the only accurate way to age is by study of the sliced teeth (usually lower front two teeth) studied under microscope. Basically to count rings and confirm age. Everything else is an estimate and most of the ones I've sent to the lab came back a year different. So someone is wrong frequently.

High shots like that both times? You probably arent bending at the waist. Like others have said, practice from an elevated platform or a stand a bit. If she didnt wind you or see you, youll be ok.

instead of going out hunting I would probably spend some time at the range shooting at different heights etc to see what is wrong

A couple knee surgeries have slowed me down a bit. But that is the key to still hunting, SLOW! When I think I'm moving too slow, I'll move slower. I plan each step before I take it. Good balance is a help to keep movement to a minimum. Keep in the shadows and use trees and brush to hide your outline as much as possible. The sun at your back will help. The wind in your face is a must. A good binocular will help to see parts of a deer, the flick of an ear, the tips of antler, of a bedded buck. They won't always be standing! A windy day with maybe a little drizzle or light snow is perfect for still hunting. Two of my best bucks have come from hunting this way. And have been doing it for over forty years. And still learning!

I am new to hunting but have been out seven times this year primarily trying to still hunt. My first day I walked up on a deer that was feeding and never saw me. Got close enough for a good shot. I have spooked MANY deer with this method but have learned the following about it (also have read a lot): - large visibility areas are preferable to me. I feel this increaMses odds of seeing a deer before it sees me--but this is because I am not trying to get bedded deer (damn hard, though some do manage it)--I want them when feeding - damping sound is completely crucial. I have been out once after a rain and the leaves were all quiet; I was a ninja - wind is important--not just direction but the stronger the better; when wind is in the teens the entire forest is loud and this is what you want The last time I was out the leaves had really started to cover the ground a lot since the start of October and moving quietly through 2" thick cover of dry, curled leaves is brutal. Of course, I also probably move too quickly. Moving through marsh quietly is also very hard--suck suck of shoes. This Saturday morning I plan on trying a new area. It is going to rain on Friday, which will shut down the heavy leaf cover everywhere now. Also it is supposed to be very windy. The wind will help further by giving cover noise and if it is really strong should help cover scent as well. As such the deer will be mainly brought down to using vision, and although deer have better motion vision than us their detail at range is poor. I still hope again to come up on a deer feeding oblivious to me In any case, wet ground + high wind are perfect conditions for this stuff.

I love to still hunt in rain wind or snow...especially if I know the area real well....I'll try and walk and stop ever 25 yards are so until I cut a track I can tell is fresh then it's game on...nothing like stalking a specific deer especially in the snow Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

My best one was when I got back from Iraq the first time and bought myself a Benelli R1 in 30-06 as a gift to myself, my wife already had it at the house so I went right out and shot it and hated the way it felt so I got a hacksaw and cut 4" off the barrel then it felt stock heavy so I drilled a couple of 2 1/2 holes with a hole saw in the buttstock sprayed some expanda foam in it laid some glass over the holes and now it's perfect! I most likely couldn't get 200$ for a 1400$ Gun if I wanted to sell it but it's perfect for me and isn't going anywhere! The look on my wife's face when she came down the stairs and seen my new 1400$ rifle in a vice and me with a saw to the barrel would have been worth it even if I didn't like it when I was done!

I thought it was 30 minutes before you can see until 30 minutes after you can't see any more? Man, so much misinformation. I am going to have to look that one up. I might just have to sell my headlamp.

Ok the first buck is 5.5 plus,I have pics for last 3 years, I apologies for 2nd pic, of it those thumbnails are small and I posted wrong second photo. the second is 3.5 have pics front 1.5 to present , the 3rd is either 3.5 or 4 .5, the pics I have of it last year make it look 4.5 and sheds that were found are more similar to a 2.5, and that would make it 3.5, either way it's a shooter around here.

Yes you can. I always wear mine under my jacket so I can use my pockets. Who cares about the words though, deer cant see orange.

What type of cam? Their micro line? If anything, its probably a blessing, because you can then get a non WGI cam. Which is a good thing.

anyone on here looking for a bow for a youth? I have an older PSE Spyder with a new string and cable that I no longer have a use for. I know several REPUTABLE members have posted their kids shooting bows. This would be a great starter bow for any kid that would take them into their first year or two of hunting. I know I was taken once, but I still like to help out when possible...let me know if you fit the bill and I'm more than happy to help out....no strings attached, but if you can pay for shipping, that's all I want if that's all you can afford....oh. and I will be more selective of the person I send it to.

I wouldn't worry about pressure. From the looks of your post in "Live from Stand", the deer are use to pressure. You in fact did get two shots at her and as Grampy stated, there will be more from where she came. I'd say, stick it out and soon you'll have another opportunity...

I am blessed to have a 400acre farm and 2 leases I hunt but I don't know how you guys can deal with the public land a$$ pains like that. I have to give you guys credit I think I would find a different hobby. I get mad enough having to deal with a trespasser or 2 every year!

I meant that I have never killed a buck that I knew the age because I'd seen it in prior years and was able to age it... I have a few that might be 5.5 but without Cementum annuli analysis one can't know for sure... it would be just a guess.

I shot one 6 year old in NC on a marine corps base and as we were all standing around weighing it an old guy says " that deer will go over 200#" long story short I bet him 20$ it wouldn't go over 150, and with its guts in him it weighed 134. Cha Ching!

Or because you didn't have the balls to specify who you were talking about it can be reasonably inferred you meant it to apply to all those that do not agree with you. And to openly discuss it here and try to inform people about the ruling and how misguided it is is one avenue to apply pressure to get it changed. If you don't think DEC monitors this sites you are wrong.

Holy assumptions The majority of the guys I see complaining on this forum about this program, are guys that kill deer consistently. Im no trophy hunter, I know Culver isnt, along with a bunch of the others. It has nothing to do with trophy hunting. Go back and read the thread.
