November 11th, 3:07pm After hunting Pretty hard for the past month an a half and not having any luck I decided I was gonna try a new spot this evening so I took a stand out with me and hung it, got done hanging it and pulled my bow and the rest of my gear up... I was all sweaty from hanging the stand in the warm temps so I sprayed down well with Primos Hunting Vanish Scent Eliminating Spray and then put on my ScentLok System gear, Strapped my Hunter Safety System harness to the tree, got my camera rolling and filmed my opening evening interview and then sent a txt to the Outdoor Legacy Pro Staff saying I was in my spot and ready for action (4:32pm) I had only been sitting several minutes when I looked over and saw a big bodied deer coming thru the woods, Quickly turned the camera on and prepared for a big doe however as it came closer I saw the spikes... I had already pre determined I was gonna shoot the first deer I had a good opportunity at for meat in the freezer and I really didn't even think twice about it as I moved the camera into position and drew my bow as he stopped directly downwind at 11 yards below my stand. (Thank God for Scent-lok ????) All I could hear in my mind was Justin Zarr from Bowhunt or Die saying "Aim for the exit hole, not the entry" so I aimed for what I figured would be heart level as it exited on the other side, I squeezed off the shot and he took off running with me following him the best I could with the camera, He made it about 50 yards before stumbling sideways a few steps and falling to the ground. (4:38pm) I proceeded to pull out my phone and send another txt to the Outdoor Legacy Pro Staff... "Deer down!!!!!" (5:10pm) After letting him lay 30 minutes or so I called my bro to come help me with retrieval, climbed down and began looking for blood... A heavy blood trail that I could almost run while following led me directly to where he had expired. Upon field dressing him I found I had taken out both lungs and the heart! Those Dirt Nap Gear DRT broadheads work awesome! A big thanks to my bro for his help dragging the buck out as well as his help taking trophy photos and filming my after the kill interview, I'm super pumped to have my first ever buck with a bow down!! An as they say, "From here, I can only go up!!" ???? Look for the footage from the hunt on a upcoming episode of Outdoor Legacy ???? As im sure you can tell it was snowing pretty heavily while taking trophy pictures22 points

My friend harvested this beast yesterday Long Island public land. He was all rutted up tarsals jet black and stinking. He came in to my buddy's tree and just started to turn away when my friend hit the grunt tube and pulled him back. He said he came in head low, ears back and lips curled. He was on the trail of 2 does and a spike which had passed a few minutes earlier. What a great buck!!!!!...too bad i had to work. Cant wait to get out Saturday and hopefully get a chance!!13 points

In light of my recent debacle, I have a question, scenario, whatever. So...the rules state that legal hunting hours are between sunrise and sunset, no? Today I got out of work early and was able to get in the woods by 2pm. The first thing I did was check the exact time of sunset on accuweather.com. They have sunset today scheduled to occur at 4:40pm. I watched the clock as I sat in my stand. Up until 5:18 I could very easily have clearly identified any animal that walked with in 30 yards of my stand(none did). So, you guys are telling me that at 4:40pm, your arrow comes off the string and goes back in your quiver, even though you can still see clearly and identify your target and beyond? That's it, you're done, because accuweather puts the sunset at 4:40. You are going to pass on a megladon, a #140 buck, because he came into range at 4:53? If you say that you are, I call BS and think that you are a liar. I think that much like politicians, people are going to say this but do that. Me, personally, I'm taking that shot at 4:53. It may be wrong in your eyes, I may be wrong for admitting it on a public forum or anywhere else, but I own what I do, right or wrong. I make my decisions after weighing the potential outcomes and live with the consequences. That's all. Flame suit on.10 points

Got this little fella tonite. I've seen him now 4 times in the last month without a doe around. Well I've passed up shots on him twice, I've been out of steaks since August so he didn't get a third pass. Unfortunately first shot clipped a branch and went high and spined him, I quickly followed up with another shot square in the shoulder. Happy to be having tenderloin for dinner tomorrow. O I passed on a decent 6 point a half hour before he came out. That will be a nice buck next year.10 points

Shot this buck at 8:45am this morning cruising a bedding area, popped out at 32yds and double lunged him. I've let a lot of young bucks pass and haven't shot a buck in a few years because I wanted a deer I'd be proud to tag. I don't have private land to hunt so to kill a good buck on public land makes it that much sweeter. Awesome day! Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk7 points

So then.. because I can still see a turkey in the daylight at 3 pm in May.. I should be able to kill it.. even thought the law says hunting ends at 12 pm. It isn't about whether you agree with the law or not... it is about doing the right thing and following the law. Anything else is you trying to justify doing what you know to be wrong... whether you own it or not.6 points

This morning my one of the crew chiefs sent me a text. He was on his way to the job site and a car had just corked a nice buck.....the cops and the distraught young lady were standing there looking at the damage and my guy pulls up and inquires about the final resting place of said buck. The heat said hey buddy, it's yours if you want it! So guess who gets to do the gutting?? The police tagged it and it was quickly transported back to the shop where I dressed t off PDQ. Although I had a change of clothes with me I somehow did the most perfectly clean gutting job of my life! WTH MAN? When it's my deer I'm a bloody mess. 10 minutes later it was propped open and cooling. My hands and knife were rinsed off in the quite possibly polluted ditch water and we were back to work!! It was a darn shame because it was a VERY respectable East Amherst buck...................but at least it didn't go to waste.5 points

I've said it before , people that hunt to the exact minute are a bit like Bigfoot , Mountain Lions and unicorns, I've read about them but in 40 years of hunting and knowing untold numbers of hunters and hunting with perhaps over 100 different ones , I've never seen one in the woods. I'd like to see how many here are in complete compliance with the SAFE act ...., personally I do not know one who got rid of magazines over ten rounds or registered their rifles and the states numbers back the low numbers of comliance . I guess though the few that did obey are all members here .4 points

http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/15sunriseset.pdf Sorry have to say a big..YOUR WRONG...read straight from the book in above link....it says SHOOTING HOURS it does not say you can not be in the field before or after...4 points

Somehow I'm not worried about sending this thread off topic... this year I have had numerous comments on my page from "hunters" that didn't know about the doe only areas they were hunting in, some that had no idea that you could use a crossbow in NY, some that didn't know you could kill a bear in NY, and one that thought the northern tier hunting seasons were the same as the southern tier... and of course.. those who had no idea of the sunrise - sunset shooting hours... they didn't realize that sunrise and sunset were actually a time... scary!4 points

I give you points for that, but you picked an easy topic to do it. It was like tossing French fries on the beach , you know the sea gulls are all going to drop out of the sky and peck at each other trying to get a fry.3 points

Wow, this thread was started last night at 8:43 and we are on the 8th page already. We must be setting a world record here. Love him or hate him, you got to give it to the OP for lighting things up. I think he's owed a prize actually. At least a box of Rice-a-Roni for crying out loud!3 points

I agree that it's a good idea that you leave, since you are obviously intellectually superior to the rest of us poor shmucks on this forum... It truly would be an injustice if you were to waste any more of your time with the likes of us...3 points

I'm not disagreeing that the law is the law. As one other person on here said, the sunrise/sunset times change based on where you are in the state. Do each and every one of you (even the bunch on here that I'm sure still have old flip cell phones) look up the true sunrise/sunset times based on your GPS location as I do? You all keep saying how you pull your arrow at the stroke of sunset, are you 100% sure without a doubt you are using the right time? Also for any of you that have gotten out of your area code and hunted other places with the half hour before/after rule pulled your arrow at sunset, you know cause it's the safe thing to do or did you use that extra half hour cause big brother said you can? Again, I know you need to follow the laws for where you hunt (I hear, I can read (and even comprehend), I'm probably as smart or smarter than most of you (and have the paperwork to back that up). I'm not the OP, I'm not sitting here professing (bragging) that I'm breaking the law, I just think it's pretty funny how there is such a large group of people out there that blindly follow like a flock of sheep. I'm now done with this thread and probably with this board, as I can not waste my time with people that refuse to think for themselves but would rather mindlessly quote sections of a manual of what makes you an acceptable hunter without even trying to understand what those statements mean, question why they are there, or how they came to be.3 points
-
You can question the law.. you just aren't suppose to break it. Lots of laws are changed after large groups petition or lobby otherwise. I have heard lots of hunters complain about the sunrise - sunset law, but I have never seen an active lobby by hunters against it in NY. If hunters don't like the law then ban together to get it changed.3 points

What about 15 min late on the last day? Now your not even in season. For me, it's a personal thing. I want to do it right the way for my personal achievements. Could I bait and and get away with it? For sure, but I wouldn't want to look at those antlers or pictures of the deer I killed over it. Same goes for before/after legal hours. I've caught some big bass the day before the season opens, could I have kept them without getting caught? Of course, but again it would eat me alive. In 2014 In Wyoming I scouted on 9/30, the day before opening day 10/1. I had my rifle with me incase I came across a coyote. I had this buck 30 yards from me. Could I have killed it and got away with it? Of course, but once again it would eat me alive. No difference between 15 min early on 10/1 or the afternoon of 9/30, both are out of season. To each their own, but I like to know I did it the legal way. I don't buy the comparison to other non hunting related laws. Just don't see it. If you want to compare it to driving cars, illegal would be using illegal parts I guess in a race. You might get away with it, you might not. When legal sunset hits, I stand up and unload my gun or take the bolt out of my xbow. I've been hunting 16 years and never had a deer come by while I was unloading. I set a camera up on a scrape next to one of my stands a couple days before Halloween. I didn't get to hunt this spot much this year since I killed a buck on 10/2. In particular, I was hoping to get some good pics of a big 9-pt with a crabclaw that I'd gotten pics of a few weeks before. Well, I finally made it up to check it this morning: ended up get a couple of pics of the 9-pt passing through... I was really excited to see this big ole droptine bruiser. In the first pic he is 15 yds from my stand. I'd love to see him a couple of weekends from now... Also had a few two year olds, some does, a few yearling bucks and too many coyotes...3 points

Buck bomb brought no change to my hunting experience this season. Not a damn thing. I did learn that my friend, PITA the squirrel, averages a 49.7 second wait in his nest before venturing out to find more eats. That's how bad it has been- I have begun tracking squirrel movement. Saturday I will focus on the local chipmunk collection schedule for a comparison! I AM LOSING MY MIND!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

A gun dealer in the US is required to have a Federal Firearms License (FFL). They are also required to perform background checks prior to transfer of a firearm. There is NO "gun show loophole" with respect to FFL holders. The vast majority of private sales happen between friends and/or family. A background check in this case is nothing more than a prohibitive tax. Magazine limits? Who are you to decide what I might "need"?3 points

If you climb up in the dark it ain't so bad until it gets light I'm not a big fan of heights but this doesn't bother me. Bottom platform is tethered to top so you're good there. Doubtful both would ever lose their grip at the same time. Once you get to set height you use your transport strap ( strap that you cinch around both pieces to carry in ) around the seat portion. All the while wearing a lifeline. No worries, you'll be fine. Practice in your yard a bit. I did before actually taking it out in the field.3 points

So I couldn't sleep at all last night, i finally fell asleep but when I did, I ended up sleeping through my alarms. I woke up at 7am and saw it was already light out. I debated whether or not to go out because of the rain, but thought hey why not right? I was all ready and in the blind by 720. at 730 i grunted a couple times and softly hit the rattle bag. 10 minutes later i saw some movement in the distance, couldnt tell doe or buck at first. As it was walking away i saw its antlers so i grunted twice and it immediately turned around and headed right for me. I didnt have a good shot until it quartered away, and i hit him right behind the shoulder. he ran 25 yards and went down. he isnt a giant but he is still an 8 pt and my first buck, so i am happy.3 points

I have never been checked since 1994. In NY statistically speaking you have zero chance of being caught breaking a game law without being turned in. Fishing I get checked but we are a little more concentrated, the steelhead/salmon spots, ice fishing etc2 points

If shooting before sunrise or after sunset is ok because other states allow it, then is baiting ok because other states allow it? I don't see how anybody can say illegal baiting in NY is any worse than illegal shooting before/after legal hours. There's 2 types of deer killed here in Ny that we are discussing; illegal shot ones and legal shot ones. Pretty easy to determine which is which. Like I said before, getting away with an illegal shot deer is easy. Enjoying that picture or mount on your wall knowing you "bent" the rules is something you have to deal with it. I couldn't deal with it and be happy knowing I cheated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

No illegal is going 60 in a 55 just bc most do it doesn't make it legal....and day before and 15 min late are again different examples completly...I will give you credit and anyone else who can deep down actually admit that they don't bend the rules weather at work or anywhere...if your a true straight edge I applaud you....but apples and oranges he saying a clean ethical no issue shot a few min after a weather apps sunset time not day before or day after or from truck or quad...I personally would take nothing from anyone if they said 10 min late I'd say congrats... I just got back from a trip to the park with my kids, I had never been and I've lived here for 25 years. It's freaking amazing! I saw a lot of hunters trucks, how'd you guys do tonight? We did have a decent six or eight cross the main road in front of us but I don't think he was leaking!2 points

"NO ONE NEEDS TEN ROUNDS" The elite have spoken and the criminals will obey…….LOL!!! Two criminal thug scumbags decide to use their illegal, untraceable fire arms to do a home invasion at Uptown Redneck's home. They MUST load their mags with only 7 rounds , because thats the law!!!, and Uptown must do the same. Liberal Utopia fantasy2 points
