So this has been the best year ever for me. I got my first Bow kill 10/17...a big fat doe....Last Saturday I got my first and biggest buck ever with the bow....a 5pt and today I beat that by a lot. I got in my stand at 6am and waited for the woods to wake up. It was a perfect morning. Cold, no wind, sun coming up...Just the kind of day I am usually at work for.....At about 7:45 I hear a noise behind me and look over my shoulder and I see a buck. Its about 30 yds behind me moving from behind my left shoulder to behind my right shoulder. I inch myself around in the stand and get my scope on him. I can see he is a 4 pt. I am trying to decide what to do when I hear a noise back in front of me. I turn my head and a doe is coming down in front of me. I go back to paying attention to the buck. I have him dead to rights a number of times and decide he gets a pass from me. I know a lot of you do this but this was a big deal to me. If it wasn't for my 5pt last week this would be my biggest deer. I never figured I would be in position to pass on a buck but I did....Fast forward to 4pm....I am thinking to myself....why don't I ever see deer in the evening. I have been hunting for years and 95% of the deer I have seen were before 9am. I am thinking back to the 4pt and how people always say don't pass a deer on the first day you would shoot on the last day. I catch movement out in front of me...its a deer...I check my phone and it's 4:10....I think if they are going to come in it better happen quick. I get my scope up and find the deer. Its a doe and she is coming right to me. I catch movement behind her and move the crosshairs....Please please be a buck...I catch a glimpse of Antlers and I can tell it is wide. The doe is moving right in....and I mean almost at the bottom of my stand. I am trying to keep myself composed because I know if I blow it with her right there he is gone to. He is moving in but more off to my right side...He is behind some trees and he stick his head and neck out....and I am like...wow they do exist.....I have my cross hairs right on his neck and I am thinking do I take this shot. I am proud of myself. I walked myself through the steps....breath...squeeze the trigger...don't pull the gun...pow..right in the neck...He drops right there....I look down at the doe expecting her to bolt. She doesn't budge....I couldn't believe it...she went right along like nothing at all happened. I want to go see my deer but I don't want to blow this deer out of there. So I wait and wait while she feeds off. I finally climb down when she is about 35-40yds away and she could care or less. I walk over to him and I was so happy I had tears in my eyes. I was really starting to think that deer with 6 or more points were mythical creatures....Thanks for reading!!!!16 points

I can add two of my better bucks to the deceased file... The first is probably the best known age 3.5 year old that I've ever had on cam. He was weaker on the right side this year but still a bruiser, a buck that could have been a real giant next year. I saw him bowhunting twice the last week and had a feeling that his daytime wandering habits were going to get him into trouble this weekend. Sure enough, a neighbor killed him 7:15 yesterday morning. He was the one buck that I was really rooting for to make it through season. Oh well, at least I won't be hoping he shows back up when I start running my cams again in a couple of weeks... Last year: I had been keeping tabs on this deer for a friend of mine. He was a very frequent visitor all through Sept and Mid-October... Last night he showed up in my uncle's alfalfa field which is about 3/4 mile from where we had been getting him on cam. My cousin dispatched him with his 7MM Rem Mag. Unfortunately, he had recently broken off both brows and had a couple of deep gouges in the back of his neck. My friend's sister-in-law heard a vicious buck fight last week in the location of the trailcam. No doubt he was one of the bucks she heard... Congrats to my cousin on harvesting a great buck after missing the past four seasons serving in the Marines...11 points

Not that I'm saying any of above is right but when I was young everybody put their dead deer on the top of the vehicle and it was normal and no one cared. Now we need to be so PC because it might offend someone where food comes from. See where that has got us too now in the crazy PC world where everyone gets s participation trophy! I'm not sure hiding our hunting pastime is helping at all. You can also be respectful to the animal I'm not saying to do otherwise. It's just this oh hide what we do! I'm not ashamed of my hunting why should we be! My rant lol7 points

Opening day started out with my son and I getting up before the alarm went off because we were both so excited. I got everything ready to go and loaded up the truck while he helped out. We got down to the farm, and headed to the ground blind that over looks one of our food plots. When we get there, it dawned on me that I forgot our chairs. Not a huge deal, we sat on the ground inside the blind and made the best of it. We sat and watched the woods wake up. My son was having a great time listening to the owls hoot and wondering what made this noise and that. Before the sun came up, we saw a couple of deer cross the plot, about 100 yards out. He was excited to see some deer so quickly. Things slowed down for a bit, but right before 8 I saw movement in the brush past the other end of the plot and told my son to get ready. Does started pouring out into the plot, ending up with 9 or 10 standing out there, about 130 yards out. I turned up the power on my scope and watched the biggest doe mill around, waiting for a broadside shot, which she quickly gave me. I took the shot and hit her a few inches further back than I usually like to, but I knew it was a solid double lung hit. She took off on a dead sprint for the thicket to the North. I racked the bolt and scanned the rest of the deer. Most ran off and didnt offer a parting pose, except two, so I found the one that I knew wasnt a button buck and hit her right in the high shoulder, dropping her in her tracks. I looked over and the smile on my sons face, and light in his eyes was picture perfect. I put the safety on my rifle and sat it down and my son jumped into my arms with excitement saying "We did it Daddy, we did it!" After a few minutes, I gathered up my rifle and we headed over to check things out. The second doe was down, a young doe. My son checked her out as I started looking for the blood trail from the first doe. I found blood and asked him to come over and help me. I showed him the blood and what to look for and asked him to see if he could follow the trail. A couple of times he needed a bit of help to pick up the next spot of blood, but 150 yards later he exclaimed "There it is!" and pointed in some thick brush to the doe piled up. I was so happy that he picked up tracking that well. We headed back to the truck and hopped into the ATV, took it down and grabbed our gear out of the blind, and picked up the first deer and took it up to where the other one was and began to gut them. He helped out and thought it was the coolest thing he had seen. While I was in the middle of it, I heard running behind me and looked around to see a big deers behind disappear behind some brush. A few seconds later we heard a gunshot. About 10 minutes later, one of the other guys that hunts there walked up and said his brother shot a doe and they were dragging it to their truck. I offered to finish up my deer and pick theirs up with my ATV, so we did that. He told me another couple of guys had a nice buck down, so we went to check that out. As it turned out, the deer that went by Evan and I as I was gutting, was a 4 year old buck that Ive been watching for a couple of years. I had been calling him Hooks. He had run right to the guys, so I told them Id haul him out if they wanted, so we loaded him into the ATV. Ater I got all of the deer back to the trucks, I called my buddy and we headed over to where they were getting ready to do a few small drives. After the first drive, we ended up running into a father and son that had a slammer buck on the ground and they asked if we would be able to help them, since we had ATVs. We said sure, so my buddy took his wheeler back and came back after 10 or so minutes with the buck strapped to the back. Man, what a buck this kid had shot! We stood around and congratulated him and listened to his story. Turned out that morning he had gone to his primary stand, only to find that some douche bag had stolen his ladder steps for it. He then went to his backup stand and got in. Right around 8, the buck came up behind him and he put him down at about 80 yards. Talk about a blessing in disguise! Now, we have permission to hunt this place, but we dont because there are alot of issues with stolen stands, etc there. While we were congratulating the kid, one of the guys that has permission to hunt there showed up, and ranted and raved about how upset he was that someone else had killed "his" buck he had been after all season. During all of the cursing the rest of us just stood there in disbelief that this guy would act like such a classless jerk in front of the kid that had just taken the biggest buck he had ever seen. Im pretty sure we figured out who was behind the missing stands and whatnot at this farm. We did a couple more drives, and took a few does in the process. My son had a ball and we decided he was tuckered out a bit and ready to go sit for the afternoon. We grabbed some chairs from my buddys place and headed to the blind again. We ended up having a bunch of different foxes come through, as well as 2 does that hung out for an hour or so. I decided not to shoot, as I have plenty of cutting to do before I drop any more does. My son fell asleep in the blind, and I woke him up to leave at sunset, so there was plenty of light for the walk out. When I got to the truck and loaded everything up, my son came over and hugged my leg and said "Daddy, I wont ever forget this day! It was the best day ever.", which put a huge smile on my face. We got home and changed and hung the deer in the garage. Then we headed to a friends camp for dinner. By the time we left, my son was totally wiped out, and fell asleep before we got out of the driveway. It was, without a doubt, the best opening day of gun season I have ever had. Plenty of memories that will last a lifetime. Pics below... In our blind, ready for it to get light out First doe we walked up on On the trail Found her!7 points

My gun season ended at 7:15. I barely had enough time to settle in, heard him making a scrap inside some mountain laurel then stepped out onto a trail and made a fateful turn towards me.7 points

What I like about this thread is that they guy that did nothing wrong is the jerk, then other guys are talking about putting gut piles in his driveway, and harassing him in other ways. I wonder why so many people have the idea that hunters are a bunch of knuckle dragging Neanderthals.6 points

Got in the woods late today. Had a long night chasing Striped bass, landed a 36" fatty and got home just after 2am. Set the alarm for 4am and 4:30am, just in case I sleep through the first one. Woke up and was delirious as to not knowing why my alarm didn't go off, got into a panic as I was worried I overslept and my hunting buddy may have been waiting on me. Turns out I woke up before the alarm went off, 3:58am. I get up and slowly drag myself out of bed and start getting ready. We leave around 6am and make it to our spot around 7:40am. We've never hunted or scouted this area before, but it would be as good as any. Spoke to a local while gearing up and was tipped off to the surrounding land layout. We took his advice and walked the trail. Walking down the trail, we saw 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 hunters all set up right off the trail. We contemplated a few times to do the same, but the areas didn't look appealing to me, that's until we came across a bend in the trail and ran into some young pines, a flowing stream, next to hardwoods with some low cover 80-90 yards out. I said to my buddy, "this place looks good, but let's walk down some more and see what's down the other end." Not 20 yards into the walk, we spotted our first deer of the day. I tell my buddy, "deer, get ready!" We get into a crouched shooting position and wait for an opportunity. That opportunity never came. We saw the two deer turn away from us and disappeared into the woods. We stood there in disbelief, contemplating what our next move should be. We decided to pursue and stalk them to get a shot, chancing pushing them to other hunters or back the way they came. After a steady, fast pace of about 80-90 yards, there was no sign of them, and I suspected they didn't get that far ahead of us. I signaled to my buddy to slow it down and get ready to get in a shooting position while I glasses the woods in a 180 degree sweep. That's when we spotted movement about 160-170 degrees behind us, 3 does. I wasn't sure at that point if these three were different from the two we saw minutes earlier, but it didn't matter at that point, "deer! Get ready!" We both get into a crouch shooting position again, but this time the deer would continue their path into and out of some small saplings giving us small windows of shooting lane. My intention was to let my buddy take the first shot, as his rifle was proven accurate and mine left me with some doubt. I waited, and waited, and waited both the shot from my buddy never came. He was about 20-30 yards away from me, and communication was difficult with us both concentrating on the target ahead. I locked into one of the does, and saw an opening 10 yards in front of its path. 9, 8, 7, .... 1, boom! Shots fired, doe down! The rest is history. My wife and I were set up this morning at the same location that I shot my archery buck. I was watching a gulley crossing and she was about 75 yds away in a stand overlooking two fields. About 7:15 I hear her shoot...look up and see a nice buck coming at me. I swing to get the gun on him and he tips over!!! What a way to break in her new TC Venture .308!!! I believe this is the same 8pt that was under my stand when I killed by bow buck... He ran about 40 yds and was leaking blood like he was hit with a Rage. Love those Nosler Ballistic tips!!!5 points

To the rest I have tried to explain and apparently it doesn't stick...You do not see me going around judging and correcting others mistakes( unless a joke) because I can't walk in their shoes to know whats going on....But even though it is none of your business by any means You might want to look up Aphasia and go count what ever blessings allotted you. The fact that you misspelled the word IDIOCY, is beautiful. I'd really love to hear this story from the other guy's perspective. Hard to tell what's really going on from the mutilation of the English language, that you are trying to pass as a post. I'd sure love to be your neighbor. Pretty sure we're about a mile from eachother, but that's much too close. I used to think it was the wind in the trees making that "biiiiiiitch, creaaaaak, whiiiiiiine" noise, that I always hear over the back of the hill. Now I know different. Sounds like maybe your blind is directly on the property line. That's always a classy move. Is it facing their land, too? You have plenty of property, so why do you need to set up so close to the line? Can't stand the thought of someone else succeeding, or do you just get pleasure out of screwing someone over, who has no recourse? You're fortunate to own a decent sized piece, so why do you feel it necessary to mock someone who can only afford that "dot on the map"? You don't know their situation. Maybe they didn't marry as well as you. I'm sure they would probably sell, but I'm sure property next to yours would be tough to GIVE away. Even if they really are bad neighbors, so what? Just don't set up near the line, problem solved. No though, you love the drama & conflict. Deliberately doing stuff to keep deer from using their land? Because? They don't follow your rules? You should be ashamed of yourself, but instead, you're proud of your behavior.3 points

Why do want pass thru? If getting expansion it's dumping energy. I shot 3 consecutive deer with light fields and all where lodged under skin of opposite shoulder. One doe was shot from about 25 feet with 3". She crumbled right there. If your talking SST's I've heard they pass thru with no expansions. I myself want energy dump not pass thrus.2 points

Why be a Masochist ( A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences ). And now we are correcting spelling . Wow ! If many folks had to use Spell Check and it wasn't working and you couldn't post a misspelled word , there would be fewer posts on here . Several people type faster than they are thinking and transpose letters but we know what they are saying so what's the big deal . ........... Just an opinion ! Flame away !
