  1. I found another finial tip to top off one of my lamp shades today! When I spotted this one laying there, I could almost imagine the little buck bedded and scanning the surroundings under the hemlock in my mind before he shook it loose! He picked a great spot to catch some ZZZZZZZZZZ's!

  2. When I was a kid the landscape in NY was a bit different than it is today. I grew up in the country and half of all my friends lived on family farms. Farms were everywhere and that meant there were hay fields and where there were hay fields there were Woodchucks and back then lots of them. I remember well the very first one I took, I was hunting with a friend with my single shot open sight Savage 22 which I think was a model 120. This Savage had to be cocked by pulling the rear of the bolt cocking piece after a shell was chambered. Anyhow we spotted a Chuck out in a hay field and I crawled on my stomach to about thirty yards, the Chuck stood up and I took and made the shot and the kill. I became instantly obsessed with those critters. As I got a little older my Dad started letting me use his Winchester 61 in 22mag which increased the killing range quite a bit over my 22. After a couple of years I graduated up to Dad's Sako 222 and I was pretty much in heaven with that rifle. I put away a lot of Woodchucks with that gun and out to 275 yards or so it was deadly, I also shot my first Buck with that rifle. Well when I was old enough to get a decent job and earn some money I finally purchased my first Varmint rifle, a used in good shape Remington 700 ADL in the then fairly new factory 22/250. That baby added an easy 100 yards to the kill zone and I took full advantage of it's longer range. While I was happy with that Remington 22/250 I still was not satisfied, I dreamed of owning the top dog of Varmint calibers and in my mind that meant the 220 Swift. Problem was nobody back then produced a factory 220 Swift rifle. Winchester dropped the Swift and came out with a lesser cartridge than the 22/250, they called it the 225 Winchester. The Swift always had some bad press about being a barrel burner and, hard to handload for, short case life and the list went on, a lot of that bad press was mostly crap! I think Winchester pulled a boner by discontinuing the Swift and an even bigger boner redesigning their model 70 rifle. In the early seventies I was reading through a Gun Digest and came across an article by Outdoor Life firearms editor Jim Carmichel about Bill Ruger putting in production his model 77 in the 220 Swift with a 26 inch medium heavy varmint barrel. Carmichel who was a huge Swift fan himself gave the preproduction model a glowing report. Man I was excited, I was drooling so bad I must have looked like a mad dog. To make a long story short it was not long before I had one of those Rugers in my possession, she was topped with a straight 12X Leupold scope. I used Jim Carmichel's pet load of 39 grs of IMR 4064 under a 52 gr Sierra match bullet for about 3950 fps and hit accuracy paydirt right off the bat with half inch groups at 100 yds. To say the least me and that Swift back then were a Woodchuck's worst nightmare, I made so many spectacular shots with that rifle that I could not begin to tell about them. What pretty much sums up my thought on the Ruger 220 Swift was on a warm summer day outside of Norwich NY on a hilltop overlooking hundreds of acres of huge hay fields. I had a case guard box of 50 reloads and had just put down number 37 without a miss, I looked down at that rifle and said to myself this thing should be illegal! Al

  3. Found the match to my other side from January finally! I was floored where I found it, literally 10' from where I have walked at least 5 times. Goes to show how even a trained eye can miss them.

  4. Weather was nice, though not so good for hunting. I did my first coyote hunting, didn't see anything but had a great time. Zero snow geese, but had a great time. Saw a beaver, a bunch of deer, and had five gobblers gobbling at me this morning. Been a very long time since turkey been on my land. Excellent day though the hunting itself yielded nothing.

Defrosted 4 pounds of venison burger . and mixed the seasoning in real good . Ended up with 14 burgers . I vacuum sealed them 2 to a bag except for one that was single . . I ate the other one . DELICIOUS ! My wife can't eat them as she cannot have Gluten so unfortunately I have to eat them all myself !

  13. I almost had a debacle this past weekend. Wife wanted 55lb. Mirror hung over a glass console table. The two hangers on the backing on the mirror were like 25" apart. My beams are 16" apart, so I went 1 beam and 1 wall anchor rated to 110lbs. Hung it up and checked a few hours later to see the wall anchor drooping big time. Guess it wasn't going to hold much longer and would have been a very very costly crash through the table and wood floor. Took it down changed the back to 16" and went on 2 beams. I escaped a catastrophe because surely everything would have had to be replaced if it fell. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. Simplest option: Choose a fairly wide 3-lamp fixture that has an 'ornate' feel to it and mount it normally on the box. Then, move the mirror over a bit to 'split the difference'. Very few people will even notice it, and if someone busts your chops over it tell them there's another bathroom they can use. I've done this several times when a customer makes a last-minute vanity change or something. Even after I clearly point out both the problem and the solution, they generally have a hard time even seeing the 'problem'. Don't sweat it, the bath looks great.

  21. The season is almost over. Golden eagles are migrating. One site that is still operating has a bunch of birds feeding, including 2 we telemetered. This photo is the only one we have ever gotten 3 at one photo in NYS. They usually wait until another leaves. I really like the photo of the eagle chasing the coyote.

  23. My Dad used to fix old pocket watches. "Old" as evaluated back in the late 50's. He collected ten or so watches and, every once in a while, he'd tinkered with them to get them running. There were a few that never ran. When asked; "Why not just throw the bad ones away?", he'd say; "Even a stopped watch is right twice a day". I still have three of his old watches but only one watch still has its hands to keep it right twice a day. Another saying he had was: I man with a watch knows what time it is, A man with two watches is never sure.

  25. Oh also forgot! Hunting buddy found a shed. Half of a small six. 2 very nice points and a third smallish tine. Hope to see him around in the fall. I am guessing he should be a nice 8 or at least a big ass six. Trout and smelt season on the horizon. Hope to get out for both.

  26. Hooked up and plumbed in a dishwasher and garbage disposal for my brother in law. Everything seem to work very well, electrically anyway lol . He lives in Albany and I finished it late Sunday and headed home to Rochester. I get a call from him on Monday that the dishwasher wont drain and is giving an error light. Well he called a plumber and $125 later I had forgot to punch out the knock out in the side of the disposal before hooking up the dishwasher to it.

  27. Similar stuff that is in my late fathers tackle box. I guess from the late 1940's after WW II. Maybe worth something to a collector. My grandfather fished lake Erie back in the day for blue pike.

  29. I don't see many hunters quitting hunting if they made lead ammo illegal. I do think there may be a drop in ammo sales until the cost gets a little more equal to lead prices, especially for shotgun ammo. As for starting a new thread on this topic, go for it. You won't hurt my feelings one bit. But, to alter this thread now because you did a side step and re thought how you worded things would render this thread worthless.

  34. Stores listing Rio Bismuth shotgun ammo and actually stocking it to sell are two different things. Last fall I searched a 100 mile radius in central NY of every major sporting goods store doing business selling ammo. 2 Gander Mountains 2 Dicks 2 Bass Pros 2 Herb Phillipsons And several small private guns shops. There is non to be had anywhere!! I could not even special order it!!!! I did find distributors online that had it in stock but thanks to our "safe act" no shipping to NY. Shipping to an FFL made the price per shell almost doubled, way too much! A friend of mine took a trip to Arkansas to visit relatives and I gave him $250 and told he could spend it all for non toxic shot shells that could be safely fired in doubles. Guess what even the giant pyramid Bass Pro did not have one shell in stock. We are talking the capital duck hunting area in the US. The best he could come up with is stores that would special order it. which would have done me no good. I made a post on this board for any leads where I might find some non toxic within reasonable driving distance and came up with a fat zero again. The only solution I could come up with is to buy components and reload my own ammunition which is still far from being reasonable. Like I posted before in the other lead apocalypse fear mongering thread, are all going to die someday but absolutely no one is ever going to die or even get sick from eating game shot with lead bullets as long as they care for their meat properly. 37. Me and my dad took off work early and hiked back to the homesite where my wife found the CSA button. We found some neat stuff but there's a piece in particular that I'm curious about. It's near the end, for those of you who may not want to sit through the other digs and other finds. Maybe some of you older folks may know what it is. Let me know if it's something worth going back and getting because I definitely will! The mystery piece is around the 7 minute portion of the video. And feedback is appreciated. 40. There is a reason the saying "playing opossum" was thought of. They really don't resist and actually do play dead when in imminent danger. I have come across 3 in the woods. Could have killed all three with a stick. Porcupines are very similar. You can walk right up to them.

  41. get a fixture that sits on a square or rectangular base and slide it over till its centered on the wall. I think the backs are pretty much open for wiring so room to play with......maybe, or at least it will cover the hole if you have to move it.
