  1. Anybody been bullhead fishing yet ? I know it's a little early, but with the mild spring I thought they might start biting a bit earlier than usual. The bullhead fishing hasn't been as good the last few years on the ponds that I normally fish, but my rabbit hunting buddy has got permission for himself and me on a big private pond near where he lives that supposedly has big bullheads in it. We're looking forward to giving it a try, perhaps this weekend. Bullhead fishing is simple bank fishing at it finest, sitting on a bucket with your rods propped up on a forked stick, waiting for the tip to start nodding. Good eating, too, dusted in flour or Bisquick and fried, or sautéed in butter. My Dear Old Mother, God Bless her, would KILL for a mess of bullheads !

  2. As my username implies, I am from Louisiana. Years ago when I first got online I was invited to a hunting forum, it was spring of the year, so Laturkeyhtr seemed appropriate and has stuck with me. I am a deer hunter first simply because there is more meat deer and there weren't any turkeys when I started hunting. I became interested in turkeys when our stated made a turkey release near my families place. I used to be quite active in the NWTF, but not anymore. I served six years on the Louisiana's state board of the NWTF. I am a lifetime member of the QDMA and the NRA. I thoroughly believe in wildlife conservation and the part that hunters play. I am father to two wonderful kids and have introduced them to the hunting lifestyle. One of my most favorite things to do is take first time hunters out for a turkey hunt and not necessarily just kids but adults too. Don't be too disappointed it I don't post a lot just not in the habit. I was made aware this morning from one of your members that another long time friend was on here. "Pygmy" told me that "Maytom" was frequenting this site. I have had the pleasure to meet both and have even hunted with Pygmy. Maytom is just or used to be hilariouis and was also a fine woodworker. Hello Maytom and Pygmy!!

  3. So after 5 days of chaperoning my daughter for international ballet competition in Boston ,MA I decided to grab some man points back as dad points well banked. Took her shooting behind my buddies house with my Ruger 10/.22 and her youth 870 She's taking hunter safety course mid April. Wanted her more acclimated to gun safety and such. She impressed the heck out of me. 20 rounds of .22 at lasered 56 yards. And one shot of shotty at 35 yards. We've got her shotgun dialed in so bottom of pattern is all neck of bird with density in head. Just the way my turkey gun set up. I hate eating crunchies! She ended up shooting 90 rounds of .22 and 20 of shotgun. Basics of loading , safety , breath , squeeze , follow up shot with shotgun . We covered it all. Youth bird season can't get here soon enough

  5. Here is the one that afflicted me with the Rimfire disease. The Remington 541S was based on their target model called the 541X. Some of you folks may remember Remington's economy rifle the 788, it had rear locking lugs and an extremely fast lock time that resulted in accuracy that many times surpassed their flagship model 700. The 541S is basically a mini 788 action with the same type of rear locking lugs and a very fast lock time. Al

In all seriousness, Trump is brash and says it like it is. Is he playing the 'emotion game' ? Who knows. I have to say he is the best option we have. If you look at the alternatives, it will just be a continuation of what we have right now. Which stinks.

  11. When one gets bitten by the hunting shooting sport game the quest for success and perfection seems to be a never ending battle. My gun-reloading room started out quite modestly many years ago and for the most part served me well for for a long time. Got my reloading and gun work done for the most part with no problem. But as the years rolled by I just kept accumulating more and more stuff and order and neatness started to wane to the point where doing work and finding equipment started started to become a chore, basically the room had become an outright "mess". I made do with the situation for a long time but finally enough was enough! There was only one thing to do to solve the problem and that was a complete makeover and that meant out with the old and in with the new. I started late last summer and puttered around over the months a little at a time hopefully getting it right for the long haul. The 50 year old old Sears steel legged work benches that my presses and reloading and repair equipment took up shop on were removed. The glass doored gun cabinets and wall hanging gun racks were removed. inefficient shelves removed. I went to Lowes and purchased a row of low cost wall and base cabinets along with a counter top for my cleaning-repair-scope mounting work area and to make some organized storage. New wall shelving and tool cabinets to store all tools in their proper place and make them easily found and accessed. I replaced the old Sears work benches with two Harbor Freight wood workers benches. They were a pain to assemble, the drawers are pretty rough operating but they seem real solid and so far I like them. Because of the safe act all gun storage is now handled by safes. The room is pretty much ship shape now and everything has it's place and is stored properly where it can be found. My reloading equipment is set up now for quick change or complete removal off the benches with Lee and RCBS mounting plate systems. I picked up a handy portable reloading stand made by Frankford Arsenal, it has folding leaf wings and is very light weight, it is easily moved anywhere in the room and works great for assisting or for just stand alone reloading. I had a good time over the winter taking care of a bunch of long overdue upgrades and scope mountings on my firearms, it was real nice to have everything where it belongs and easily found for a change. Some photos of the aftermath, still some minor tweaking going on and a little congested yet but a heck of a lot better than what it was.

  19. Wow- was going to play a game of "who are the HNY DEC fan boys?"...but quit because it was too easy. It stunk and the turnout was around 30. I do commend the Art and Jeremy, as well as the QDMA's effort, for coming out but it was everything I thought it would be. Boring, arrogant, empirical and of one directions.....and the Q&A period ended before the questions did. Jeremy's presentation was well prepared but from the top of the mountain. Art's presentation might have well be Gary Alt's from a few years back minus the mention of ARs. It is kill every doe to save the understory/early successional forest growth. Ill take a shot at the QDMA for not having their presence in the questions/stances presented. Seemed like their take (in my eyes) is not to upset the apple cart...but the QDMAs rating and deer report numbers sure have changed lately BP's mention of hypocrisy was spot on. We dont set costs or deal with moneys vs Everything we do has to be cost effective Hunter satisfaction is a largest priority vs social effect Out of state studies show vs If its not NY you cant reference it Deer management is the biggest priority vs Bears, phone calls, etc Randomly selected vs 7 regions of selected folks Do whats needed on your ground vs Empirical directive (Doe harvest numbers) Make a suggestion vs "that wont work" Predator/Winters matter vs They don't Macro management should matter most vs Our macro survey covers the majority take We work with the QDMA vs Reality on hunter harvest Hunter input desired vs MAR need 65-70% approval We cannot reach everyone for their opinion electronically but we use electronic licensing system We gather enough data on reported harvest tags to know 45% report but don't have enough info for citations on untagged deer Time for a new plan vs An early ML season is the next step Predetermined deer management plan vs realistic happenings (ie horrific winter index) If I wasn't n vacation and aggravated as all hell with this topic perhaps I could be a bit more articulate. Cant help the irony of the DEC fan boys on here with their take of youre on board or against them. The majority of hunters disagree with the DEC but they tout open communication and consideration. What? They're going to increase voluntary restrictions but don't know how. What? Theyre open to making things better but will ask 30 guys in a room the ideas how. What? they want sportsmans takes but use limited clubs and surveys to determine those mass opinions. What? Nearly all that spoke mentioned drastically lower populations but this region has too many does in their eyes. What? Please submit your opinion if we select you to do so. What? The DEC is caught in the cuffs of Albany...I agree. BUT for the near 50million in NY licenses sales they fund Cornell for hokie surveys, hold social meetings for deer human interaction concerns and this is the first darn meeting for deer hunter DEC interface I know of..... They are failing us. Surely someone will pose the "Whats your solution?" reply but its not my job; its theirs. They are failing us miserably and our funds are pizzed out the window and we are handcuffed more than they claim they are.

  24. I will miss the personal attacks and insults. Not that I enjoyed dishing them out, but I certainly don't mind receiving them from time to time, especially when I am attacked for things like my faith in Jesus Christ and for giving Him most or all the credit for the many hunting and fishing successes I have enjoyed in NY state over the years. This has certainly been a "target rich environment" in that respect, compared to some of the national forums I participate in. I did read the rules carefully, and they look to be pretty good otherwise. I especially appreciate it that there is no written or implied attempt to minimize or eliminate talk about Christianity in the forum. Happy Easter, and keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the get well wishes, but this thread is not about my recovery. It is about being able to make progress during said recovery. Looks like I should be able to get back to getting some work done in a few days. Liked watching me skin a fox , trapped muskrats with me , scouting birds with me since 2, incredible grades , extremely talented at ballet. I quit semi professional golf cold turkey to share these moments with her. I'd do it all over again. So proud of her for so many reasons

  29. I took note of the deer hunter attendance reported at a recent deer management seminar. The number was something like 64? That number indicates that hunters pretty much sat this one out. Shame on us .....right? We are a pretty opinionated, passionate bunch of people, so why do such activities draw such feeble attendance. I think I know. If we were to attend all the functions and do research and join all the advocacy groups, and research all the political and responsible things that we as good citizens are expected to do, there truly would be no time left in the day to live out our lives. Think about it. All kinds of informative meetings take place many times a year. Elections and campaigns are all things that require intense research, local, state and federal. We literally have thousands of politicians and agencies to keep tabs on. We have school boards and teachers to keep our eyes on. We have judicial branches to keep abreast of. The list of responsibilities that the average citizen is expected to maintain an expert status on is limitless. And if you do not maintain a constant vigil on all of these necessary forces in our lives, you will get chastised and told that you have no right to an opinion if we have not performed the due diligence in becoming expert on all things going on around you. And yet we also have occupations that we are supposed to be expert at so that we can earn a living. We have children to raise, we have homes and personal finance that also require infinite attention. What I am describing is an impossible list of responsibilities that no one who is honest really does a complete job on. Oh, and if you plan on doing any kind of recreation like the hunting itself, well sorry, no time left for that..... too many things that require your intense attention. Well given that impressive and infinitely long list of required attention to all things around us, where do you suppose that a deer management seminar sits on a persons list of priorities? Anybody surprised that only 64 people decided to bump their deer management understanding up to top priority for the night? If you didn't go should you now be considered muzzled from expressing any opinions? What do all of you do to be expert on all things so that your opinion is valued as credible commentary?

  31. What would I be willing to give, to be able to hunt throughout archery season with a crossbow, and for my daughters to also be able to participate in the next several years rather than waiting until they are 16 ? Certainly some cash, probably in the neighborhood of $1000, for new equipment alone. We would likely be able to harvest enough deer, specifically antlerless ones, in the southern zones where the DEC has been struggling to get populations in check, to give some venison to the "feed the hungry" programs. I would also give some more of my time and money hunting earlier up in the cash-strapped northern zone. I see more money poured into the state economy, more hungry folks fed healthy food, and improved control over the deer population. What I don't see is a down side. It is awesome to see the fast accelerating approach of "full inclusion", increased youth hunting, and classification of a crossbow as archery equipment.

  36. The truth of the matter is that the final outcome of this event will be decided by how much wealth the family of this teenager has. Too often money which determines the quality of the lawyer you can get determines what level of punishment you receive and for how long. Here on Long Island I have see this happen time and time again. In a world where "Affluenza" was deemed to be a real thing where do the lessons come from? Certainly not from the parents who teach their children that money will solve their problems. In our modern culture the mythological heroes of religion and nationality are replaced by media heroes who when caught acting badly hire lawyers or PR people to help their image, very few ever own up to their miss deeds even fewer apologize for them. af·flu·en·za ˌaflo͞oˈenzə/ noun a psychological malaise supposedly affecting wealthy young people, symptoms of which include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of isolation.

Hopefully we will find out in April, that it has passed, otherwise I will have to start working out with my old compound again. That will also give me plenty of time to pick out a new, higher-performance x-bow for my own use, and enable me to pass on my entry-level "two week special" to my daughter who will be "legal" if the bill passes.

You could of over seeded the turnips in the fall in mid to late sept.. giving the plot a double draw in fall, the surviving plants would of brought turkey in in the spring, while providing biomass when plowed under for this year's crop of brassica..

  46. The DEC is responsible for alot and accountable for very little to the hunter. I do believe this in part drives the apathy. Culver is 100% right, however, that there should be more engagement from hunters on many levels, me included. My observation is that It is simply a challenge many feel defeated on before they even start, and it drives the results we get to live with. It is what it is. The very basis of our issue is the control of management (I am speaking of the components the gov't manages). It is outside the public's ability to hold the people who make decisions accountable. Sure we can provide input - but that is it. What happens if the masses believe we don't have the right people in the job? What recourse is there? Write and provide input? Been there, done that, and voting is probably the most impactful based on the way the department is led. Again, done that. From my understanding, the DEC admitted that populations this past season were lower for many of the areas they thought "overrun" or even at capacity due to the back to back poor winters. I have posted about this concern early in 2015 as being a potential repeat of the season 10-12 years ago where deer numbers plummeted. While we thankfully didn't have it happen at that level (lucky we had the winter we did, too), it still happened to a lesser degree. The DEC's response that the population regenerates in a few generations is true and I very much understand it, but I find it questionable practice to allow it to happen in the first place when all data points to that happening. These are in large the same people who allowed the fiasco 10-12 years ago with the over-issue of the DMPs/antlerless/damage tags. Sure, trigger restraint is on the hunter. But, where is that line drawn with wide-scale mismanagement of the resource by those paid to do so? Yet, here they remain, entrenched in their jobs and even given praise for their body of work, and specifically by QDMA staffers for their data collection methods (just observations, not stating my opinion on whether they were warranted or not). These are also largely the same people who contracted with the vendor for the tag system 10-12 years ago that allowed hunters to apply for WMUs where tags were not allowed, thus wasting a selection. Even worse was the fact that when Joe Bob retail associate screwed up the selection the hunter wanted, there was no recourse except for a drawn out communication process that took weeks to resolve. And, a litany of other imperfections. These same DEC people contracted another vendor a few years back, after learning their lesson the first time, didn't fix either of these issues in the second contract/product, and basically boxed themselves in during requirements gathering, which now prevents them from managing a priority as they ID it (doe management) because of the "system." A priority that was well known and ranked high on their list at the time of that second contract, yet completely ignored when in the requirements phase of the vehicle they would need to 100% rely on. There's plenty of other examples, but these are two that I believe are signs of mismanagement of the resource by those in position. One of these people in position was even purported as "having his head up his azz" by someone in this very thread and I believe he is spot on, yet that person in position remains entrenched. None of these people are in jeopardy of their livelihood. I wish I had that luxury in private sector. Responsible for a lot and accountable for very little.

  47. I don't think you read what I wrote. My contention has nothing to do with them asking opinions. I thanked them for their time as I appreciate the fact that they did in fact at least show up. I contest the basis of their information. It is not grounded in facts. They regurgitated a bunch of BS as if it was a room full of ignorant people who don't see through it. They would be better off not doing ANY studies then they are to base studies in statistically irrelevant (and perhaps biased information). I own and run a successful business. I will tell you for a fact that at a MINIMUM 3% will return some statistically relevant information. 10-15% is ideal. So, IF the DEC wants an opinion, with 550,000 licensed hunters in the state, at a MINIMUM there should 16,500 results. Ideally that number should be closer to 60,000. Their results of 2,800 for 7 units (400 people per unit) is incompetent and lazy. They should either do the studies correctly (if they value the opinion as both Jeremy and Art mentioned many times with comments like "hunter surveys are the cornerstone of our research.") OR don't do ANY survey's and compile data with other resources. I personally do not care which method they chose, hunter feed back or not, but IF they chose a path, be responsible and do it correctly. I also didn't once type anything about being in support of any specific plan. To each their own on what is shot. I specifically laid reference to the guy who spoke and said manage your own property and don't rely on the DEC. I applaud that effort. On a micro level, the HUNTER needs to be responsible. The DEC will never (nor should they) manage at that level. At a macro level, they SHOULD be competent though. If they can't be, then what are they being paid for?

  48. I'm trying to remember when taxpayers agreed to give elected officials "perks". Didn't we used to hold them accountable for every expense? Wasn't personal enrichment prosecuted as embezzlement? When did voters and taxpayers agree to get fleeced without screaming? Probably when the cult of personality overrode common sense and voters began to believe these "representatives" were better than they are.

  50. Garland has been nominated for a single purpose. He is ideologically opposed to the Heller decision which stated the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to own firearms. That decision prevents the government from going completely to the extreme in it's drive to eliminate and ban all types of civilians arms ownership. Semi-auto firearms, both handgun and long gun, are the objective here. That, however, is just the beginning. All types of registration requirements would follow, as well as other restrictions like storage requirements, ownership limits, possession limits for ammo, permits and permit fees. Legal carry, in any form, would be eliminated. If he is sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice, the 2nd Amendment will no longer be a right of the people, it will be a privilege from the government, granted only to those the government feels can be trusted to follow orders. This is something everyone who owns firearms now, be they hunter, target shooter or collector, should be writing their Senators about today.
