  1. Tell him it's all good so long as he keeps salt licks under his trophies too.

  2. Deer (especially nice bucks) wont hit a salt lick with any regularity durring daylight this time of year through late winter... I wouldn't sweat it. Tell him throw some corn out with it for extra appeal.

  3. I'd ask him why he's trying to kill the apple tree? They are not salt tolerent, if he looked at me stupid ,I'd call the dec.

  4. It sure ain't the .303, 45/70 or the .416 Rigby! LOL

  5. Why bother with a salt lick under an apple tree ? I'd be happy using the apple tree as an attractant.

  6. Talk to him first . I'd tell him I saw the salt lick and what's up with that ? we don't hunt like that around here, and it's so close to my property I could get in trouble by hunting to close to it . I hope it's just out by your camera for pics ( giving him an out) . Then keep a close eye on him. If your first move is to call the cops well expect the same when your kid drives to fast down the street , or you play your music a bit loud, build a shed or pool deck without a permit, you dog barks, grass is to high , camper is parked to long in your yard, maybe you like to have a camp fire some nights hope it meets all the code requirements because he'll be calling .even if you're right in everything you do he'll still call and the cops / code enforcement will respond. We have friends who's neighbor called on them dozens of time. When they cut the grass he'd call the Sheriff because the clippings crossed the property line...... Talk to him, watch him , you'll know after a season how he rolls.

  7. Yes- and I was not the only one.A little different here where I hunt. I also don't believe in the "snitches get stitches" gangster, outlaw mentality. If the violators planned retribution or revenge?........well....may god have mercy on their soul.

  9. Wait until you start finding the apples and other snacks that come out. Wait until he's tresspassing all over the area. Wait until he wacks a giant-illegally. Wait until he ruins what was probably a good area. Then sit back and wonder why you didn't call the DEC. If he played by the rules he wouldn't need to worry about someone calling up on him.

  10. You have a larger problem here. Under NYS. law, you can be ticketed for baiting and or feeding deer, even though you didn't place the salt lick there. It applies even if you didn't know it was there during season. As long as your hunting within a certain distance of it, ECO's can nail ya. I would dam well inform my neighbor of it.

  11. Bring it up in conversation that you saw his setup. Be nice and explain ti him to be careful because it is illegal to use the salt lick for deer. Don't make it sound like you will turn him in or anything like that. I can see people using these things for pictures but when season roles around and a nice deer is hitting the thing it will be hard to take away.

  12. A mature buck does things with reason or he wouldn't have made that age. What's the reason? Pressure, wind, time of year, time of rut.... Are you hunting a specific buck or deer? Scout and then plan not plan then hope Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  13. So it may very well happen that the archery doe-take in those areas could go down substantially because of the DEC's brilliant program. Gee, I guess all those people who were surveyed kind of missed that little potential side-effect. And since no one at the DEC can think for themselves without a mandate from stakeholders, It may wind up a result that slips by everyone. Or perhaps the DEC knew exactly what would happen.

  23. Of 19 of my personal hunting friends, here is the breakdown.. 30-06.....4 .270 Win...4 .243 .... 3 7mm08....2 25-06.... 2 .260 Rem.... 1 .270 WSM.... 1 30-30.... 1 .300 Win mag.... 1 Action types Bolt....16 Pump.... 1 Lever.... 1 Single shot.... 1 Bolt actions definitely rule here..It is interesting to note that there is not a single .308 Win or semi auto in the bunch. This certainly varies with locale..I once hunted in an Adirondack camp with 20 hunters...the rifles were OVERWHELMINGLY 30-06 and .308 Remington pumps and autos...I think there were only two bolt actions and two levers in camp..The rest were pumps and autos.. I sometimes hunt in New Brunswick with some friends who are locals there.. Most of them use Remington autos in .308 or 30-06, and they have lots of fun arguing among themselves about which is better..LOL...

  24. We as hunters have the opportunity to express our opinions, but what happens is based on more than just us. Unfortunately the DEC is driven by politics, and not biologists and wildlife management focused people. Until that happens, we are at the whim of groups that speak the loudest, and not always those that speak for the best interests of everyone. Carrying capacity needs to take the primary role in management decisions, some areas are just not capable of holding large numbers of deer. After that, hunter satisfaction, landowner needs and issues, etc come into play. Most changes that need to be made to improve hunting and herd health in alot of areas are going to make someone mad, the DEC should be making changes that are effective, take the least amount away from everyone today, and have a positive effect for everyone in the long run.

  28. 12ga foster slug from a mossberg 500. 23 years ago. I spined an enormous doe. I had to finish her off with a knife since the gun jammed. She was bawling and trying to get up. An awful first experience for a 18 year old but it made me the hunter I am today. I don't rush shots and if I can't see vitals the deer walks.

  30. Baiting 2 or 3 deer hanging untagged in the barn or garage Jacking deer at night Killing a deer prior to the opening of the season Hunting on ground where you are not supposed to be Tresspassing and killing deer...etc,etc. Have witnessed all of the above and have called for every one.It effects me. It's a little different where I hunt than most areas.I don't think you should be selective when it comes to reporting violations-if you don't report them-you think it's OK and you are contributing to the problem. Also interesting to note that NONE of the above incidents involved ANTLERLESS DEER.

  31. Figure out how to use it to your advantage. Last thing you wanna do is piss off your neighbor over a salt lick because if your dec officer is some clown now that decides he is gonna walk in the woods every day at 730 am to see if this guy is hunting over feed. Trust me if I was him I would figure out a way to piss you off. Leave it alone

  32. Have you looked into Bad Boys? The only thing the deer hear are the electric motor and tire noise.

  33. Music!!!! It's all that damned late fifties and sixties rock and roll that I had to listened to at top volume. And that was before all the ear-splitting clarity, intensity and variety of tones that are available today and the constant use of headphones. Next generation of kids are all going to be stone deaf. And then too, there was all the shooting without ear protection. Heck, we never thought any of that stuff would ever mess up our ears. Well something sure did! And now the damned deer are taking advantage of it.

  34. Do you want to make enemies with your neighbor. If you do call the game warden. If you don't mind your own business. It's on his property. Probably trying to get some pics.

  35. I've got one or two really small Fawns that I'm sure will retain their spots into October. I've seen them with spots quite a few times in mid October up north at hunting camp.

  41. I don't get much sleep either. I'm awake every half hour or so, because I'm afraid of not hearing the alarm and being late to the woods. That'd be like the dream you have where you get to work before you realize you forgot to put pants on - unacceptable.

  43. Windows 8 and 8.1 is the biggest turd they ever came out with. Its the hardest system software to use, everything is scattered and very difficult to find. Windows 10 is a huge improvement over 8 and 8.1. And yes it has media player. I have had zero problems using IE, Firefox or Chrome browsers. Everything is easy to find, and not the stupid layout like smart phones and pads use. Im sure there are bugs yet I have not come across but they will release patches im sure. Been running 10 almost 60 days now and I no longer get pissed of or cringe using 10 like I did with 8 and 8.1. I recomend making the change.

  45. We keep saying that, but in reality, our damage done not agreeing is minimal to the DEC. We can disagree all we want but were not changing the rules no matter how much the DEC says we have a voice. We dont, and the DEC does what they want to their agenda. So we can disagree all we want, but in the end it still doesnt change the result.

  46. Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year.

  47. I haven't been asked, but I can tell you how not to handle that dilemma, and I don't even have to be the head of the DEC whitetail management team. The antlerless season is actually a good idea, but to waste that activity by assigning it to the least effective hunting weapons/season sure does bring into question the sincerity and credibility of the effort.

  48. Pathetic brute in farm country with plenty of food available that is rich in sustenance. Very nice 2.5 Typical 3.5 that made it through last winter ok amazingly. Or a 4.5 that had a rough winter. Take your pick. I would pick the brown spot behind the shoulder. 3.5 Nice buck Chief! Do us all a favor and get him so we can see the results! Good luck he is a beauty!

  50. I see the buck of your dreams waling along and the only missing part is you are not there, you are sitting home watching TV...get out there this year and maybe that buck will walk by... at 74, I do not hunt as much as I did in my youth, but still love the pre hunt scouting, just walking the woods and looking for deer sign or the first buck scrape. Then the plan take shape of were to do when on opening day the guns go off. I like the early bow season, warm weather and not a lot of hunters in the woods. I let the doe's and young bucks walk so I tell my wife of 50 years, but she says I just go out to take a nap by a tree. I hope all has a great hunting season Bill
