  2. It seems to me that once the animal has been reduced to non-edible carrion, it is no longer a "harvest", but simply a search of antlers. The only salvageable part of the find is the antlers, so the shooter is no longer looking for a deer. ....just the antlers. At that point the antlers become the same as sheds and whoever finds them gets the ownership.

  4. Which is why I tell gun hunters they don't know what they're missing. Bow season is great but tough because harvesting can be very tough. But you get to see deer in the natural environment. Not spooked. I'm also a firm believer that bow hunting makes you a better gun hunter. You're more patient. See the woods differently. But that's just me.

  8. Raccoons have a similar bone, and many years ago when I was a young buck, I gave one to my girlfriend's college roommate and told her it was a turkey call. I can still see her blowing on it and wondering why it didn't make any noise. She left school shortly after that and entered a convent. TRUE STORY, except for the third sentence...<<grin>>...

  10. The deer was found like 3 weeks after being shot... If the story the OP gave us was true and it was 80 yds from where they lost blood chances are it was dead within a 24 hours. The cape would've been LONG gone. The hide starts slipping after a few days. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

  13. I know what didn't work. All scents I bought. Doe estrous and buck lure. Never saw anything from the direction of the scents and sometimes didn't see anything when I used it. Also my combo doe and buck call didn't seem to do anything, except maybe chase a buck away once. I grunted at it and it turned tail and ran.

  14. REAL men drink whiskey straight, or at least on the rocks. It IS permissible to chase it with beer( preferably) or water (if no beer is available). Only gay guys ruin perfectly good whiskey by mixing it with soda pop. This must be where the penis bone swizzle stick originated.

  20. it's the inner bone, not the dong itself. And yes, knowing where it's origin is some pretty primal cave man **** right there. there's a few comments here that seem to think anything penis related is gay. That's just sad really.

  21. I have done several now with Van Dykes skull bleaching kit. It comes with Sodium Carbonate, you mix this with the boiling water and the flesh literally comes right off the bone. I flesh it best I can and then boil for 1 hour total with the Sodium Carbonate. I can literally take a head with nothing done to it and have it totally done in 4 hours. 1 day start to finish including bleaching (let it sit overnight). http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/Skull-Bleaching-Instructions-W377.aspx

  22. for gun hunting yes, and I know that's the subject of this thread. As a bowhunter, lack of pressure is your best friend. It's really funny how different the seasons are.

  24. I would think "possessed" means just that, you are in possession of the means to fire it regardless of where you have it. To the one above who talked about store policy vs law, I don't think you get the point. If you have a 50 cal muzzleloader rifle and supplies and buy a 50 cal muzzleloader pistol you are technically in violation of the law if you do not have it on a permit since you do possess the means to fire it. Whether the authorities find out or not is irrelevant, it needs to be licensed.

  25. I generally skin while still warm. Last one I did was a bit concerning, luckily for me, I had a buddy with me that enjoyed torturing them by popping them. He said something about the sound of them popping soothed his inner hatred towards them or something of that affect. Hey, don't judge! 27. Most people think there is a deer shortage yet they spend every minute they get trying to kill one during deer season, yet there is a coyote overload apparently and very few hunt them... So all of the studies done are wrong and your "studies" of which you have no facts or proof are in some way correct? Makes sense...Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

  28. Dang , you almost hurt my feelings I'm all for shooting as many as I see. As soon as we get some snow I'll be out there with the caller and #4 buck. I know they impact deer population and any avid turkey hunter will SSS them all spring season long. This was the first spring season in a long time I didn't see one coming in to try and kill a turkey ( me )!

  29. Funny thing..........For quite a few years at my uncles cabin in Naples (on the south side of Hunt Hollow) we would often hear coyotes in groups howling at night. One evening when we had an over load of guys sleeping in the cabin, my buddy and I slept in the barn. Sometime well after midnight a group (who the hell knows how many, may have only been three but sounded like a half dozen) of 'yotes started making music RIGHT OUTSIDE THE BARN! It was scary and unreal at the same time. For all those "howling packs" over the years I've only ever got more than one 'yote on my trail camera a couple times and those were young pups. FWIW, for the most part the past 4-5 years all I've done is 20 second video from my cameras giving ample time for multiple 'yotes to make it to the big screen.

  37. Welcome to our addiction - time outdoors with a little (or alot) of time hunting. Don't sweat it - still have 2 more weeks to go for gun season. Getting a deer your second season is good. I didn't even see a deer my first 2-3 years.

  39. Went to Iowa this year the second week of November for a bow hunt. This is my third time going New York is not even close to Iowa as importance of deer and deer management. If you go you will never want to come home. Also figure how New York could have it if we did it right. I was successful mid 140's but really happy it dressed out at 240lbs..... Third times a charm saw bigger but second to last day and was not coming home empty hand the third time.

  40. if it's really cold I've had trees pop and break. I do prefer to hinge cut when the trees are dormant and so it's there when the deer need it which will be January into spring green up. still learning with this but there's preferred browse versus non-preferred browse. also trees that say as a log split easily don't do well as they break completely. you want to have at least a 1/3 or more of the tree at the cut still attached so it will continue to grow. stuff like ash and poplar will be difficult. also your preferred trees will be red and soft/sugar maples and oaks. moderately preferred trees will be hemlocks, cherry, and some apple. then there's much less desired trees like beech. deer will eat what's available and they need. obviously some are more of a preferred $ tree for logging and fire wood but many times you can find some that aren't straight to make a nice lumber/logged tree in the future. also if you make it a point to cut a mixture of trees based on preference you can tell just how much it was needed and/or that you have too many deer for the habitat to support well. if say the lesser number of beech don't get browsed then you're looking good habitat wise. if they still get hammered than that should be a red flag. disregarding hunting layout and strategy, try to hinge near ideal winter yarding or bedding so the deer don't have to relocate or travel more than needed.

  44. I lost a doe & a buck once. Brought them back from the butcher, & put them both in the same upright freezer. Opened it a few weeks later, & brownish black liquid poured out onto all over the floor. Everything inside was pretty well decayed. Horrible clean up job. We actually took the window out, & threw the freezer out a 2nd story, rather than carry it down the stairs & have to inhale it. I still feel bad when I look at that buck's rack, or pics of those deer. Losing the meat really robbed me of the satisfaction of the hunt. I still wish I hadn't shot either of them. What a waste, they died for nothing.

  48. It defiantly made deer hunting interesting but this weather should be really good for the deer heard. A combination with a warmer winter and a ton of acorns means we should have more deer making it through the winter this year and healthier deer next year.
