  4. Here is my muzzleloader deer, my first. I came home from work early and only had about a half hour of daylight left. In my hurry, I jammed up the gun while loading, so I had to clean out the breech and reload. The same thing happened during gun season last year when I shot my buck and I told my wife on my way out the door that it was a lucky sign. Walking down to the field I saw four deer and tried to sneak down for a shot. I got about half way there and spooked them. I decided to wait out the remaining twenty minutes of daylight in a tree stand, hoping they might return to feed. Two minute sit and this four pointer walks out about sixty yards away. One shot and he went right down where he last stood. Given the poor gun season, I was very happy to harvest this deer in the late few days of the season!

  7. Times are changing! In past years it'd be all over LONG before this. All the gifts would be opened and trash would be knee deep in the family room. Now it's just me and the pooch, listening to xmas music on satellite radio. I came down at 6:30; took my meds, fed the dog (after I kicked her butt OFF the couch!), took a walk around the block, made coffee and just finished reading the morning paper. As I walked the neighborhood I didn't see much sign of early risers either. When I was a kid, oh boy were we up early! I don't hear any stirring upstairs.......maybe it's time to start making pancakes, that'll wake 'em! Last night our daughter was out late with her boyfriend; dinner with his parents then exchanging gifts. Son was just hanging out and the wife was wupped from all the build up and holiday stress that takes much of the joy out of it for her. I wrapped a few presents after doing the dinner dishes, then headed to the cellar to continue the post hunting season re-organization and inventory. Who has the young kids? Post up some pics if you're so inclined, I miss those days. (But I'll never admit it to my wife!) I hope you all have a great day, however it is spent and whoever you spend it with. Merry Christmas, Larry

  11. 12-20-15 My buddy cancelled on me last night so we didn't go to his club for the morning. I called another buddy and him and his dad were heading to the 100 acre woods, so I asked what time should I meet them as I wanted to get a crack at the doe I saw yesterday. They were meeting early to shoot the $h!t at like 630am. I told them I'd be there by 7am. I rolled around the corner and my lights hit them in the face and it was 7:01. I got out and we chatted for a few as I got the rest of my gear out. Then a clue other guys pulled up so we decided to see where everyone was headed and make a plan for some pushes. We were going.g to sit for a bit and then a few would move to certain areas to see if we could get some moving. It was almost shooting time so we headed to our spots. I walked approximately 50 yards and headed down an old logging road, just like yesterday. It was extra crunchy this morning so I was going as slow as I could. As I rounded a corner, I could see down into a small flat at the bottom of the hill. I scanned it back and forth for a minute and did not see anything so I kept moving forward. I took 5 steps and looked straight down to the bottom and just to the right of the logging road there is a deer staring up at me. I get it in the scope and it is not huge, but will be a great eating deer for some guys I know at work. I try to settle the crosshairs on her but I am shaking like a beech leaf on a windy day. I took a few deep breaths and tried again. Man I was all hyped up for some reason and could not get steady. If I moved to the closest tree, the deer would bolt. She turned her head away from me and I dropped to one knee. Now she turned to look back up at me after I had knelt down. I was able to take a few more breaths and get the crosshairs settled and I squeezed. As the smoke cleared, I saw her tip over, and another deer that had been behind her, behind a tree, darted off towards my buddy and his dad. I wasn't in the woods 10 minutes and it was over. Was nice to see some deer moving through the woods naturally this year during gun season rather than chasing ones that have been pushed and pressured. I have a few guys at work that love venison and do not hunt. They also don't have a lot so I have been looking for a larger deer to split amongst them. I decided it was now or never this morning and wanted to get them something, so size didn't matter.

  15. I've been waiting for a golden crack at a red fox for some time now but never pulled the trigger since I didn't know what the hell I'd do with one. On 11-3-15 this dude came rolling by the stand at 8yds and I immediately knew I would come up with something.] He was originally supposed to be turned into a fuzzy trappers hat, but insteaed got sewed into a ML accessory pouch. I sewed a fleece liner and stitched it in the best I could. It ain't perfect, but it 's a great reminder of the quiet encounter.

  26. When it comes to challenge, you will have a real hard time convincing me that there is any comparison between any rifle of any sort and any bow of any sort. That is not even something that I would seriously waste time discussing because that is just a foolish comparison. You talked about the sub-moa accuracy, and then try to compare the challenge to that of a bow. Your comparisons with archery equipment are a hell of a reach at best in terms of a challenging method of deer hunting, and that is a judgment that doesn't really require any shooting experience with one of these rifles to make. As far as level of archery skills/challenges, I have to say that I watched Stacey Groscup shoot aspirins out of the air with a recurve, but I wouldn't exactly call that something that the average archer can do. Yes a dozen yards was a bit short and was mentioned in the context of a beginning archer of the recurve days (me), but I and many other people start getting a little uncomfortable after 25 yards. That is more likely the maximum efficient range of the average archer today. And yes with that limited distance the challenge is way more than any kind of rifle. So that point isn't even arguable. Quote: "The ballistic performances isn't much different than that of a broad head from archery equipment. Both implements primarily kill by means of wound channel and hemorrhaging." So you are saying that these big bore air rifle have the same looping trajectory as an arrow? See, when it comes to performance, I know nothing about these rifles, so I am surprised to hear that the performance is so poor. It sounds like a rangefinder would be a necessary accessory. But let me clear up one thing about the theory of killing between a blunt rifle projectile and a broadhead. The broadhead relies on sharp-edge laceration to penetrate to the vitals. Most bullets that I know of rely on energy and impact to penetrate to the vitals. That is a whole opposite theory of getting the job done with absolutely no similarity. I just wanted to straighten that point out a bit. So anyway, basically in every instance where you try to compare any rifle to a bow, the comparison fails miserably because there really is no comparison. Each weapon is unique in form and function with no similarities of any sort. You picked a bad weapon to try to compare air rifles against. That is a true attempt at apples and oranges type comparison, and not even that close of a comparison. Traditions ..... not a real big deal, but when I was a kid, my air rifle (B-B gun) was doing well to kill a sparrow. What a stretch it is to see a B-B gun being considered as any kind of deer hunting weapon of tradition. You asked why I use a bow, and "tradition, culture and heritage" was all part of my answer. It was never about trying to re-live my childhood. You misunderstood the kind of tradition that I was talking about. Cost vs. performance: My .270 Ruger American is a fairly decent quality gun, and it cost no where near the numbers I saw in this thread of one of these air rifles. The .270 will handle 95% of the shooting opportunities in NYS when it comes to deer. That's not the picture I am getting of these air-guns. So again, I do question the price vs. performance issue of opting for an air rifle. At least there is a huge issue there that I need more convincing on before I get all excited about running out and buying one of these things....lol. I do wonder about what the recommended maximum effective range is for deer. And I am curious about terminal energies and what is considered to be too far to ethically use one of these. I was hoping for more technical data on performance, but I guess I am not really all that interested to go on a research mission. But anyways, I guess I can now see a use for air-rifles in urban/suburban areas, which I will never really have to concern myself with. It certainly would never be my choice for the more traditional rural hunting by any stretch of the imagination. And perhaps it may be a desirable thing for kids where the massive kick of a .270 or .243 is just simply overwhelming (Sarcasm intended) . Oh yeah and other situations where noise may be a concern it might serve as a weapon with the features of a silencer that some may be interested in. Anyway, that's a pretty small niche, but does answer why somebody might consider buying one. I guess I am satisfied that there is nothing there for me, and I thank you for the answers.

  35. Well heck, I never saw THIS thread! Although I've posted about this deer already, I may as well give this thread some life. I did kill my buck this year with the ML but that was in the "regular season" and has already been posted in the "gun season" harvest thread. The doe above was shot last Saturday afternoon in Lima. I hunted the morning and it was by far the coldest day I've hunted in a while. IIRC it was about 25 degrees and a 20mph+ wind out of the west. I pussed out and opted for a box blind. I saw a young 10pt and a doe but couldn't get a clear crack at her. I stuck it out until 10am or so then went to a another spot to mooch around and see how much sign I could see in the fresh snow. Never saw a deer and the tracks were sparse, putting it mildly. I was back in a box blind but not the same one as the morning hunt by 2pm. At 4pm a doe and a couple fawn stepped out. I thought I'd have a gimme but all of a sudden they took off on a trot across the field. Fortunately they stopped and I re-positioned to another window (!) for the shot. Bang flop. As I walked up I thought I shot the wrong one, seems I have the darnedest time sometimes when shooting doe. Once they're on the ground they don't always look as big as I thought. I snapped a quick pic with the phone then gutted her then hoisted her into the truck. (Yes, another perk to the box blind is the drive-up capability. And yes, she was a very nice sized deer, probably at least 2.5 years old and loaded with fay when I butchered her Tuesday. I'd GUESS, 110 lbs or so. maybe a touch more. I had a couple brutal drags this year and two I could drive to. I'm happy to take the good with the tough! PS, sorry for the grainy barn pic; I used the self timer on the phone with the camera propped up on the seat of the wheeler, it was cold as heck, the deer was spinning on the hoist and I wanted to get to the house for whiskey to knock the chill out of my bones.

  38. Stupid discussion, I never once said they are the same thing however not a single modern firearm uses a clip to be loaded "and don't say stripperclips because the weapon isn't loaded with them the magazine is." When the OP used the term clip for his 783 everyone on the site knew exactly what he was talking about because clip is commonly used as a slang term for a magazine as I stated in the first place. A better comparison would be a motor and an engine, if you went to a mechanic and told him your motor was makings weird noise would he know what you are talking about? Even tho a car has an engine and everyone knows it.

  41. Some state land I used to hunt in 4A was always odd when it came to litter. One area was like a dump, bottles-broken-and whole, cans, and household trash ( people would dump bags of it ). The other trail heads were clean and I never found much in the woods except really old rusty cans with those old pull tabs. Usually the cans were Genesee. A few years ago on a camping trip to a state campground I almost vomited. I got used to the park operators not clearing the fire pits a long time ago. I get camp set up and get ready to start a fire, I locate a poker stick and start moving the old ashes around and find two diapers in the fire pit. They weren't melted and the people in before us had left the same day we got there, dang they were ripe. They must have dumped them in and then covered them up. I never leave anything behind*** ( OK, maybe a spent shell I missed ). I am a smoker and I keep old pill bottles to put the butts in. ***Except, TP. I am not putting soiled toilet paper in my pocket or my pack even if it's in ten baggies! That's just gross! I also won't be using my hand to wipe and then "rinse" it with water. That's just beyond disgusting! I will now never look at a hand shake the same way again. OH, to add, if I have to go and forget TP and no leaves, the item I will have to give up to clean up will not me making the trip home either.

  45. When I got into bowhunting, it was for the super-challenge that it represented. The challenge of using a weapon that required muscle memory, and a whole list of form disciplines. The weapon then had a very direct tie to tradition, history and culture. A weapon that demanded some extreme challenges in the required knowledge of deer habits and patterns so you could get within a dozen yards and pull off a decent shot. Bows have changed appearance and performance, but the basic disciplines involved in shooting them haven't changed a whole lot. A lot of what appeared in the books of archery still apply in today's books. And so the appeal of challenge makes it an endeavor that still has the appeal of having accomplished something that is difficult. Does an air rifle provide those kinds of challenges? I really don't know because I have never shot one with the intention of dropping a deer. I don't see those same element of challenge other than wondering if I really have the energy performances to drive a projectile deep enough to enter and disrupt vital organs. The theory of operation is totally different than a broadhead, so I have no way of judging the adequacy of the weapon. It does leave me with questions of adequate performance and limitations. But again, I have no knowledge of these weapons and hence my questions. Are these things something that I would lay down twice the money that I spent on my .270? Is the performance per dollar similar to my .270? So many questions..... so few answers.....lol.

  46. The reasons given made no sense as I explained. So I am still curious as to what the attraction is and hoping there is someone who can explain it. Perhaps I'm missing out on something if someone will take the time to honestly explain it all to me with real and logical answers. I would appreciate that rather than a whole bunch of uncalled for feigned outrage and defensiveness. And by the way, in case it all went over your head, I am not attacking the weapon or the use of it. I am simply trying to understand what people feel are the reasons for wanting to use them. Nothing aggressive or unfriendly or anything for you to be getting all indignant about. Just curiosity. It is the same kinds of questions I have asked a thousand times about different makes of bows, and certain calibers and models of rifles or shotguns. Frankly, I have never had anybody ever take offense over my asking those kinds of questions.

  47. No cranker here, but you can imagine how sweet a gals first deer/buck was at the end of the day. I've never had such a happy hunt in my entire life! It wasn't the most perfect shot. She caught him a lil far back so we trailed him over 300yds. My head was glued to the blood trail which was running out by the step. Sis looked over and spotted him trying to get to his feet. A littlttle confusion amongst us at that point, but she finally settled the crosshairs to DUMP him for good! This was my most memorable hunt EVER! F= big bucks!
