Got my first bow buck tonight! Special thanks to The Real TC III for walking me thru the after shot routine! Kept me on the ground. Had a pretty easy 50 yard track and he expired 5 yards from the ATV trail. Had to cancel my wifes birthday dinner reservations for tonight, but she was cool with it! Tacks I did have pass thru, but did not find that arrow. I stopped looking for it when I found the deer! My daughter took better pics which I will post up when I can. So tonight I was rewarded for not allowing my stomach to make me stick the Doe that came in at 3:30 when I climbed up at 3:25. At 4:50 I hear a stick snap to my 4:00. Interesting. At 4:55 I hear another snap just a bit closer and look to my right(the direction deer do not usually travel). I see bone and more bone than I have ever seen on stand before. No need to count; if the shot comes I am taking it. He then meanders off the TRAIL(not a hiking or biking trail but a deer trail!!) and kicks the shit out of a sapling that wanted nothing to do with him. If he continues off roading he will be under and behind me with no shot - that’s my typical luck. But not tonight! He caught a whiff of something yummy (BUCK BOMB!) and makes a slight turn on the correct course. At 10 yards from my tree, I have no shot but I draw and hope he continues along the course. A few more steps to clear the saplings and some brush, slightly quartering away 7 yards from the base of my tree, one 1/2 step to move that front shoulder and .....zip! (5:05pm) He ran off through a thicket they use regularly, crashes around, breaks right and I lose sight of him; more trashing bushes and then silence out of my sight. And now the doubt creeps in. I cannot see my arrow but I KNOW the shot was good even though the angle was steep. Climbed down at 5:45 good blood but no arrow at hit sight. Pack up and head to my car on a different path then he ran. Call my buddy who is at work and he starts over after picking up his 10 year old son for the journey. 6:30 we start the track at the point I know he last was seen. Find good blood where I expected it, and more and more and there he lay! My best deer ever, shot from the same tree my buddy killed a big 8 (11/2) last year and I killed two doe(10/31 & 11/3). Shot my first ever bow deer tonight. 5 points, with one little nub trying to be a 6. 135 pounds dressed weight. Had dinner reservations for my wifes birthday, which were promptly cancelled! Got the latest chainsaw bear stained and sealed, now just need to take care of a few finishing touches.(eyes, fingernails, toenails.., and getting paid) On his booster base he stands 57" tall and took me a week to the day.

Finally got my dog out for his first hunt. He has been training very hard all summer and today was for him to put that to the test . Conditions were lousy and only managed to get 2 groups of birds to work the spread, not much for flights. Cooper held very steady in his blind for a 18 month old. Around 8:30 had a hen and drake wood duck cup perfectly and a 1 shot at the back drake send him down. Cooper waited to be released and then launched out of his blind like a track star. He didn’t take the straightest of line To get to him but I won’t beat him up for his first. Anyway I was able to get pics and a video of his first retrieve and taking the Woodie to the taxidermist as I have my other dogs first bird done when she was alive .

I finally got out today for the first time this season. As I was approching my food plot I noticed a buck feeding in the plot. The wind was in my face so I belly crawled to about 35 yds.(I forgot my range finder) He busted me when I tried to draw my bow! Sat til dark didn't see any. This doesn't count but I got this one on my way home with my truck! I never weighed a deer before field dressing until now, 230 lbs. on the hoof and 175 dressed! I'll measure the girth tomorrow before I cut it up just to make sure my scale is accurate!

Got him 10/19 coming in about 45 min before dark. Came down into a ravine rubbing some good size trees. Great to watch and great to have the opportunity to harvest him. 8M

I cut up most of it today and to my surprise there hasn't been much waste. Back straps are huge and no waste! I still have to bone out the back legs and that is where most of the damage was. But it looks like i got the tender loins, straps and probably going to get at least 25 lbs of ground. That's all bonus meat to me.

Hung this set in hell conditions yet like a ninja should...I am soaked and beat but I'm hanging for a half hour or so hopin for a chef special. Counts as hunting

I got off work around 245 yesterday afternoon and rushed home for an evening sit. I was not expecting a sit like this... had a doe and fawn trot through around 530 acting like they were being dogged by a buck. All in all, I had 4 bucks in the area and ended up getting a shot on this brute at 30 yards. He went another 30 after the hit and I watched him pile up.The biggest buck of my life. I can’t put into words how grateful I am.

Repaired a ground blind today instead of hitting the woods. Snow/ice crushed it in January and I finally got replacement poles the other day from Ameristep. I wouldnt have even bothered but the other day we gained access/got permission to hunt the neighbors 55 acres. He wants two doe taken off the property In return for letting us hunt there. Deer were not moving this am but a flock of turkeys came through and gave me a nice 30 yard shot

So I learned 2 things this morning! 1st I love my tree umbrella!!! 2nd I should have put it a little lower! I'm still getting wet a little on my legs. Theres a learning curve here. To low can't stand up occasionally. And it could be hard to draw a bow. To high! Still get a bit wet! But hell i'm in the stand either way

I am 90% sure I can track a deer so by the Wolc standard it’s a go. Still coming down heavy and therefore have shifted to movie on couch mode. Lol

I have a coworker who does not hunt, never has, never will, cant stand the sight of blood, or needles. He was spotted in full camo one night by another coworker in walmart lol. Our boss will get this guy a doe each year, and when this nonhunter drops the deer off at the processor, and picks it up, hes in full camo, haha.

Poured a good one to celebrate my stepson enlisting in the Marines today.

Being a military combat veteran with the army i think it's the best decision one could ever make. I think all kids right out of school should do at least 2 years. It's all about maturity wise and gives you love experience instead of depending on mommy and daddy. Tell him best of luck and enjoy the experience. God bless him.

My wife took up hunting a few years ago ( she never got in the woods last season ). She wasn't my wife then, but......... Next Sunday she will be hunting with me again. Back to the NZ private land, and hoping to get her on deer! Trail cam pics from the area are mainly does, a spike, a couple fork horns, and one basket 6. Rule up there is nothing less then a 6 ( my rule ), and of course no does as no DMP's for the WMU. Sorry, I am more excited about this hunt then the opener of the bow season. I enjoy hunting with my wife.

How many times today did you check the weather forecast? Probably 30-40 times for me.......

Who wears head to toe camo when hunting? If you do do you think it helps? I rarely have camp on if I do it’s pants because that’s what I have sprayer with sawyers. Usually just a flannel shirt or sweatshirt on top. The only exception to this is turkey hunting when I always have a camo shirt on. What made me think of this is I was watching a hunting show last night and they were out west after mule deer And the hunter was head to toe camo and the guide had jeans a flannel shirt and white cowboy hat on. I have to imagine that a guide that does it for months straight thought that camo would help his hunters kill more critters he would be wearing it. Anytime one hunts public land, they must expect and accept the fact, they are likely to encounter another hunter. This is true of the hunter sitting, or still hunting. The ethical hunter will always go out of their way to treat the other hunter, like he would like to be treated. The still hunter should change course and give the sitting hunter a wide berth. The sitting hunter will hopefully see the moving hunter move out around him. And hope a deer gets pushed to him. Both hunters then continue their hunt, with the least amount of disturbance from the other.

Understand, that it's the DI's job to break down any sense if individuality. This is necessary, so that the unit as a whole, functions together as one. Besides the physical shock in the beginning, this breaking you down to rebuild you, will be the toughest adjustment to military life. I was Army, not Marines. But they both use similar techniques to accomplish the same thing with new recruits. Once you become a warrior, the warrior spirit will live within you for the rest of your days. Fellow warriors will share a common bond. When you next see him, he'll be different, yet the same. Good luck and God speed to him.

Semper fi ! He's lucky that in Feb the sand flies are pretty much gone. They are a real bugger. My advise, keep a low profile. Stay motivated. Start doing push ups now. Don't worry about puking when you run, just keep running. Don't let the DI's get in your head or they will eat you up. Don't point your rifle up range during qualifications. Don't drink bleach or try to harm yourself or tell them you quit and want to go home as you will be on the island longer as they keep you there for "psych eval". Don't be a shitbird. If he's a smoker tell him to NOT start again once he's out. That's what comes to mind quickly, as they are all things I learned. And no I didn't want to quit or drink bleach but some guys in my platoon did.... Dummy's. Most important, embrace the eagle globe and anchor once it's placed in your hands. Takes some hard work, mental and psychical to get through those 3 months.... But totally worth it. Enjoy the vacation to a fantastic island down south! ANOTHER damn Jarhead......JUST KIDDING, even though Marines did their best to make my life miserable as a sailor, I appreciate their service !! I can understand why they were such miserable pricks.. When I was snuggled up in my rack, not having to get up until 7:30 or so, those poor marines were out doing calisthentics at 6:00 AM every morning...

So since all I have left is a dmp till gun, and with my hurt back my plan was to fly up to camp and turkey hunt today, I’ve had turkeys in my radish plot every day at the same time for the past week and a half. I left work and the wife asked me to watch the kid while she got her nails done i protested but she won. She then took two hours I flew up to camp but got here with only 20 min To go. Not a Marine by any means. Thank you to your stepson for taking on the job, however. It's a big commitment. Trust your friends and always watch your "six". That's what my SEAL buddy told me. I can only assume it works for the Marines as well.
