  4. Something felt good about this morning with the fresh blanket of snow and my sister/her fam being in for an early thanksgiving.multiple sets of tracks 50 yards from the house and bumping 3 in the field on way in i thought for sure it would be a bust.have had this 7pt on cam many times and told myself im not passing anything this late in the bow season 7am rolls around and i hear crunching just to my left and sure enough i see him walking right in my direction, stood up and clipped release.at this point he's at 25 yards on the trail.puts his head behind a tree and i draw.expecting him to take a few steps more and he turned back around heading other direction.followed him then something was blocking my view through peep.not sure what it was but(leafy jacket maybe)moved my draw arm a bit, gave em a bleat and released.heard the thunk, ran 80 yards n stood there for a solid 5 mins then slowly walked off.waited until he was out of sight to check hit spot. White hair/little blood/no arrow....great,another replay of last year's bow buck.called first neigh or to get permission.went back to house to wait for dad and bro inlaw to help track(2 1/2-3 hrs).started at hit site and worked to where i saw him standing.good patch of dark blood with bubbles!found a bed with 2 nice spots of blood in it.most of this track turned into following hoof tracks/blood on the golden rod and saplings every 40 or so yards.at this point had deer search pulled up on my phone....hit 2nd neighbors property line and backed out. got back to the house and told my dad this isnt over yet,i wont give up.made a few phone calls and got permission.ate thanksgiving then went back out, just dad and i as brother inlaw passed out in recliner.marked last blood on huntstand app,50 yards from there with dad right behind me marking last blood there he layed.threw my hands up and said we got em!!!High fives,a hug and smiles.will definitely be one of my most memorable hunts with my dad by my side on the track for the first time.1 Lung and liver.i recall him saying atleast 3 times(wow,i cant believe how tough these animals are).now to get him on a deer during gun season!! Just goes to show how tough they truly are.still baffles me on how the heck i had white hair when my shot wasnt that low Sorry for the long story guys!!!!!!!

  9. 11/8/19 I was called tonight by a hunter that shot an 11 pointer he’d been waiting for. He and three buddies looked for over an hour, but all they could find was a little brown hair. There was no blood, and they couldn’t find his tracks from after the shot. Kunox started at the hair and went into tall thick nasty swamp grass and downed trees, but could only walk about 10 yards in before being unable to get through it. I looked around a short distance and didn’t see any sign so I took him back to the hair. He did the same thing, then turned around and went the opposite way into a thicket. I let him look around in there awhile, and at one point he went hot. Investigation showed tracks too small for our buck. I took him back to the hair and one of the guys said he thought he had smelled the buck in the area Kunox had first gone to. I put Kunox down and he went back to the swamp grass, so this time I carried him around to see if he could smell anything. Sure enough, back goes his head and the sniffer went into overdrive. I watched him as I walked and he took me right to the dead buck. He was only 50 yards away, but you couldn’t see him until you were literally right on top of him. Great bunch of guys....I’d track for them anytime.

  11. Did a full day sit today that wasnt planned. Solid action in the morning carried me into the afternoon so I figured why not. I probably saw 10 different bucks, couple shooters but none in range. Several doe as well. Really good hunt

  17. Couldn’t ask for better shot op. She walked perfectly into my lane #fromtheground in front of my brush blind for a 12 yard shot. Pass through saw the blood pouring outa her on second step she ran 60-70 yards down into swamp and piled up. State land venison. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. A good brush gun is light, fairly short and fits you well enough to make fast, accurate off hand shots through fairly small openings in the brush at ranges of less than 100 yards with a bullet capable of reaching the vitals of a deer from less than ideal angles... Chambering is irrelevant as long as it fits the aforementioned criteria... NO cartridge shoots accurately if you hit brush or saplings...Even 12 gauge slugs deflect if they hit anything more substantial than a small twig...You have to shoot through openings in the brush, unless the target is VERY close to the cause of deflection...

  23. I have killed a half dozen Deer with the 44 mag cartridge, 5 out of the 6 with a S&W model 29 revolver and one with a light weight Marlin 94 lever action with a 16 inch ported barrel. The 44 mag is a proven cartridge and with proper shot placement it will take Deer with no problem. My old eyes don't do as well with handgun open sights as they once did and that is the reason I purchased the light weight fast handling Marlin to use as a woods gun in the early part of the Deer season when the leaves are still on and ranges relatively short say out to 100 yards. I shoot 300 gr Nosler HP handloads out of the Marlin and it's accuracy with those loads is very good, the bullet performance is typical first rate Nosler, you do your part and they will do theirs. For the way it is used by me the 44 mag Marlin 94 it fit the bill exactly and gets a 10 ranking Al

  24. Low 20's, some snow on the ground. Deer should be moving Advantage hunter. Walking in on very crunchy leaves to the stand, calm winds so deer can hear that for a 1/4 mile in all directions: Advantage deer. An hour later when things settle down, can hear the deer a comin'!: Advantage hunter ( I love that sound) Two hours later when said 20 F temps start to chill to the bone if not dressed to the hill: Advantage deer. The rut is on: Advantage hunter. Congrats to all who scored and can sit by the wood fire today and good luck to all heading out there in the deer woods.

  30. It’s 15* here and the pipes froze in my cabin yesterday so no shower. I smell like last night’s cornbread, IPA and tears. Think I might sit this morning out, thaw the pipes and try this afternoon.

  31. It's November 9th! Don't need anymore motivation than that to get up and out!! Just finished breakfast and having coffee. In the teens for the temp. Will head back to the oak ridge where I shot my buck last weekend. Looking for a big fat doe with my bow. I know an elderly couple that could use some meat in their freezer this winter. And my partner and I will make sure it gets filled. Best of luck to all heading out! Today and tomorrow will be among the best deer hunting days of the year! Enjoy em! And have fun out there!

  33. There is no such caliber that will shoot through brush. Back when it was slug gun only I hunted with my 870 -12 with 385 grain copper solids. Opening morning of southern zone had a doe at 60 yards pulled up shot, she dropped in her tracks. Since she dropped I decided to sit and wait the rest of the morning. 3-4 hrs later I climbed down walked over to her and no hole in the side of her. Started checking her over and that slug basically cut her throat. Couldn’t believe it , I knew I was dead on she was broadside. Turn around to get the sight line from the stand and low and behold a branch the size of a pencil about 10 ft from her was broke . Yep that little branch deflected that 385 grain slug.

  34. The pictures are coming, but in my low tech world, sometimes things take a little longer..The pictures are on The Mermaid's smartphone..Since neither SHE nor I are SMART enough to run a smartphone, she does not know how to send them to my email.. Next Tuesday morning, she will be having coffee with one of her girlfriends, who will know how to do it....Once she sends them to me, I'll have to send them to Lawdwaz to post here, since I am not SMART enough to do that...I'm guessing it will be about a week before the pictures show up, and by that time we will all be so excited about the deer gun season opener that probably nobody will give a hoot...Hehehe... I hope I'm not confusing you....<<grin>>….. Heck, before then I may catch another cat...

  35. I got my 2nd doe. I made a shot worse than on my last doe and had to leave this one overnight. Luckily she didn't go far,it was at the edge of a pretty thick area where i shot her. She about crawled under this uprooted tree. I could just see a little brown patch on the hole. I am happy she didn't go far and the coyotes didn't get her,but i did. She is a good size doe and will hopefully get along with the other one in the freezer. I am going to butcher her right now.
