Found two ticks embedded on me

Lyme is bad enough, but Babesia is really nothing to mess around with.

If you catch Lyme early, antibiotics are typically enough to prevent any long-term issues.  Babesia, I believe, is treated with the same drugs they use for malaria.

I believe that they need to be attached for at least a day to transmit Lyme. My doctor always prescribes a single dose of antibiotic prophylactically anyway. Babesiosis is generally mild and isn't treated unless you display symptoms. Folks who are most at risk include the usual suspects of immunocompromised and elderly. There's no vaccine, but it is treatable.

I assume that all ticks are positive for these in our area. And I'm always right, 70% of the time lol...

  • 2 weeks later...

Don't mess around with tick bites,  I would definitely be going to the Doc and getting a full course of antibiotics( my doctor gave me 6 weeks of Doxycyclyne)...  I got bit last summer, and the Lymes put me and my wife through hell and back.  Thank God that I was diagnosed early enough or it could have even been worse.   I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Hopefully you're better soon and God bless!

I spray all my clothes, boots, gear . Take them off outside the house , then shower . I’ve only ever found two attached  to me ( one from my yard , one hunting ) and my Dr makes me come right in and starts a round of the meds , prior to any tests .

Another reason I seldom Turkey hunt .

If you are feeling any symptoms  you should go to the doctor regardless.

The time line isn't 100%. My girlfriend a few years back had a tick buried in her for less than 24 hrs(most likely less than 12). She ended up with Lyme.

That and people don’t always remove the whole tick . One also doesn’t know how long it’s been on , just because one finds it after hunting or some other woods activity, doesn’t mean they didn’t get it in their yard the day prior .

Better safe than sorry with this stuff - I'd insist upon a round of antibiotics.  If you don't catch it early, it can get very nasty.  I had symptoms for more than a year because I didn't catch it early enough.  Fortunately, things are much better now.

200mg? My city doctor was reluctant to prescribe a single dose as he felt the jury was still out.

I spent a lot of time going from specialist to specialist trying to figure out what was causing the symptoms I was experiencing back in late 2019.  Doctor after doctor told me there was nothing wrong with me, but my symptoms told me otherwise.  The ONLY doctor that helped in anyway was an integrative medicine doctor that specialized in lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.  She told me that the 24 hour rule as it relates to ticks and transmission of lyme is a misnomer (ok, she actually said that it's patently false).  Since she was the only one who was able or willing to treat me in any way AND that treatment was effective, I have no reason to doubt her.  I'd recommend a course of antibiotics just to be safe because I can guarantee that you wouldn't want to go through the things that I experienced with my symptoms.

After doing some research on this at the time, there's a lot of conflict between the CDC and what are called "Lyme Literate" practitioners.  There was a rather alarming documentary type video on YouTube that I watched - I'll see if I can dig that up.

Good to know. I've never had one on me for more than 30 minutes (that I know of), but if I found one the next day, I'd certainly petition for a full course. Lyme is scary stuff. I know one of the guys on habitattalk.com's daughters had it bad, and she was unable to get out of bed most days. There's some tick borne illnesses that can transmit within 30 minutes, too, but so far as I know, not around here...so far as I know.

I had Lyme.  My doc said he didnt buy that it had to bite for certain amount of time and put me on antibiotics right away. He said if they get to your blood in 10 minutes or 10 hours i would think you have a chance of exposure.   I had terrible headaches and fatigue over the weekend and i knew something was wrong.  Went to the Dr on Monday, never saw a tick.  Ive had other friends - same thing never saw a tick.   I would insist on the meds - its just some antibiotics so it shouldnt hurt to take them out of precation.  Esp if you rarely take any anyway.  One of my friends they kept telling him it was something else til he insisted they test him for Lyme and it was positive.  He had terrible joint pains and bells palsey for a short time.  Crazy stuff.   I dont fear bears, coyotes or squatches in the woods, but ticks for sure.  I am crazy about checking everytime i hunt and shower right after.  Problem is you can pick one up about anywhere and not know.

I think they don’t like prescribing antibiotics if you don’t have an active infection , something about building resistance and then when you actually need them they won’t work ?

Ive taken Doxy before and it spikes my blood pressure ..
