First officially confirmed Coyote sighting by DEC on Long Island

Recommended Posts

It's legal to shoot an dog which isn't properly chained up during deer season if you see it chasing a deer. Which I'm sure is the case if you saw a yote going past your stand ;)

I know you mean this in jest but it is not true

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." -- Benjamin Franklin

"The trouble with Socialism is, sooner or later you run out of other people's money." - Margaret Thatcher

"When you subsidize poverty and failure, you get more of both.." - James Dale Davidson, National Taxpayers Union

Seriously though, I thought LEGALLY you can shoot any dog which is chasing a deer during hunting season. I would never do that because I think it is morally and ethically screwed up, but remember reading about it sewhere.

I'm serious though. I thought it was f'ed up. A guy I worked with told me about it and I thought it was ridiculous too. On that note though :bye: (leaving before being grilled)

i havnt heard of someone shooting a dog in a long time... you would have to be pretty cold to shoot a dog in the woods.

I can remember reading about yote sightings in NYC for at least the last 5 years. I dont see it as very surprising that they made it to LI. They can cross bridges, etc. No need to swim.

true and although true you would think sightings would pop up in Nassau before you would see them on Eastern LI in suffolk. there is a ton of residential area to pass through before a yote can hit the hamptons. Queens would be a tough spot for a yote to go under the radar.  jmo

anything now a days is possible tho

Plenty of cats, rats, possums, coons and small dogs in the boros for them to feast on. As long as they can find cover, food is readily available to them.

why they wouldn't allow yote hunting is beyond me. is there a law banning it? otherwise DEC should just strong arm the need. all discharge setback distances, weapons restrictions, etc. all would still apply.

I saw one creep up and grab a goose. I though it was a dog until it trotted by with the goose. That was on randell ave. By the cemetery

Glad to hear some good news from LI. Maybe coyotes will help with the excessive deer and feral cat problem.

You couldn't resist..
