Bummed about getting rid of my truck.

Feeling a little bummed that I had to trade my truck in. Due to driving more for work and the addition of a second child I had to down grade to a 4 cylinder car. Feeling bummed about not having a truck. I have my wife's small suv that I can use a cargo carrier on or trailer. Or of I get desperate I'll wrap the deer up and out it in the trunk. Haha. Any one ever been in my boat?

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about p/u and suv's.  I could do 95% of what I do with my Tacoma with my wife's Rav 4.  Easily..........

 

Mileage is a little better and easier to haul people.  The few times I haul more than one deer a year would be a PIA though.  Same with those times I haul all kinds of crap for a three day weekend but could easily survive for a month with all I take!!

 

I'm sure I'll always have a p/u.  I've owned exactly one car in my life, a 72 4 door Nova.  I totaled one truck and snagged it for $300 to get me through for a couple months until I could get back to the program!

about 5 years ago when gas prices went through the roof was spending about $100.00 more in gas a month then my payment was Have been kicking myself ever since. I don't care what the gas prices go to ever again I can not live with out a truck & found out I have not saved really any money 4 trips to the dump a week instead of 1 when I need a truck (sometimes often) I am borrowing one & filling their tank. Can not wait to start looking again this summer.  Sorry to bum you out even more

You can make that. Work,I never had a truck,take 1 to 4 deer a year hang a lot of stands do chain saw work ect.

My one buddy sold his truck years ago , bought a civic and a small trailer . Atv and deer go on trailer and he more then doubled his mpg year round. Plus it's easier to load deer onto a small trailer by yourself then a 4x4 way up in the air.

For me it 70 miles round trip to my spot. I do that 4 to 6 days a week,some times two times a day. Me likey small car......

I dont know if I could go back to a car. I like the fact I can go anywhere, whenever I want. I can pick up large items without having to borrow a truck, or plan it out. Its just so convenient. I dont have to shovel or plow my driveway in the winter, etc etc etc. The convenience is worth the expense IMO.

 

Id be pretty bummed if I had to give up the truck, I feel for ya.

Sounds like it's Half and half. I have had a truck or 4x4 for almost my whole life driving. Feels weird to be back in the car. I really loved the truck. But from a financial stand point with a young family it makes sense. My brother does have a truck that lives down the road that is usually fine with me taking it. I will make this work and then in a few years hopefully things will be differnt. I'd rather be able to afford things for my children.

Trucks are mandatory in my opinion. Part of the reason I have three vehicles. A truck doesn't have to be pretty. It has to be reliable and functional. We drive two small SUVs daily and I keep the truck for truck things. Best of both worlds. Sure the trucks don't get small car gas mileage, but having an old truck around for hunting or hauling, etc. is a big benefit when you do need it. Heck, my truck carries deer for some people on this forum who don't want to get their own truck dirty. Seriously!

I had a Chevy S-10 for almost 10 years . I was starting to put too much into it for repairs and needed a new vehicle and I was getting poor gas milage ., I bought a Subaru Forester in 2009 . It has a 2400# towing capacity so it does what I need to haul a work trailer and another trailer to haul the ATV etc . Hauling the trailers cuts back on the mpg but I am not pulling them every day .

I love my truck. I am looking to get a little beater car again. But 2 weeks ago when we got the bad snow and I look out my window and see a little Honda Insight get stuck in the road because the snow was so deep it just stopped the car and he walks over to my house to have me use my gas guzzler truck to pull him out.

Phade just gave you the best option.  Dirty someone else's vehicle.  Obviously a small car is less convenient, but not a deal breaker.  Work with what you have and call Phade to haul the deer home.

 

Seriously, I used a body bag in my wife's SUV the first year I hunted.  That will work in a trunk too.

never had a truck. Drive an accord. I can either drag my deer home or have my father pick it up in his truck.

 

I drive 70 miles a day so a truck doesn't make any sense for me to drive.

Other than a few nice weather toys, I have been driving a pick up since 1987. But if it came down to making my familys life easier I would drive a little girly car if I had to. 

Remember, just because you aren't driving a truck now doesn't mean that you never will again. Your doing the right thing don't sweat it.

my kids are not going to remember driving to the places as much as I hop they remember what we do while we are there. 

 

I am going to pay somethings up and try to get a beater truck- maybe by this fall, def next spring. just enough for hauling a few things and hunting. nothing fancy.

I had to get rid of my truck for a new Rav4 at the end of January.  All the guys at work have been busting my balls but the 100 miles a day I drive for work was killing me in gas.... as long as it can pull my boat and sleds thats all I care about.  I like the mileage im getting now tho

I only drove cars for years until it became difficult to get home in the snow (not enough ground/snow clearance).  Bought a used 4x4.  Didn't snow much for two years - temporary weather insurance.  Was driving 100/day, gassing up twice a week.  That hits the pockets hard - especially since got rid of the Camry.

 

Now driving a car for daily commute to save some money and use the 4x4 for bad weather and hunting. Don't want to give up the 4x4 unless have too. Got me home with about a foot snow on the road.

 

Save some funds and pick up an old Cherokee, Tacoma, or Ram Charger 4x4 beater truck later on. That way can still toss the kids in for those truck times.  I can say that putting 3 kids in the back of a Cherokee is tight.

 

Other wise get a min-van.  Stow/remove the back seats and put it down a tarp to use as a hauler.  Done that for lumber and drywall a few times, and moved a washer and dryer in it.  It is not a truck but can do some truck things with better gas mileage.

 

Nice thing about a minivan is that you can separate the kids if the need arises.

All real Italians keep a good supply of such bags.  You never know when they are needed and yes, I keep my truck pristine.  If it was a Dodge, it would be treated accordingly - kinda like I treat Phade's PU.

I did haul a 25' stand to the property on Sat.  Does that count as "using" my truck?  Of course, it was ratcheted down with blankets so no scratching.  lol

My truck needs new ball joints or control arm again. For like the third time. Might be because I drive it like I stole it. Might also be because Moog is always sitting shotgun and it just so happens its the right side that's going.

I have an s10 that is parked most of  he summer.  I ride the bike every chance I get. I have a trailer that I use to haul the 4 wheeler lawn mower etc as well as pellets for the stove.  It does everything I need to do. I only drive 8 miles to work, so mileage not a real factor.  However, I notice a big difference over the summer.  bike and truck are both paid for, and I have been thinking about a car to add to the group for driving back and forth to work etc.  Then I think with the payment verses gas I would save is tough to justify. I think when the truck goes, I may look into something like a jeep.  I like the idea of all my gear inside the vehicle not in the back of the truck.  I can use the trailer for deer etc. Just a thought.  Plus when I do not have a truck, no one can ask me to haul crap for them.  The only one in it is me almost all the time.  Just my two cents.

I gave up on P/U's about ten years ago and went with a mini-van. Once I got past the stigma of the mini-van and realized just how practical it was for me, I wished I had made the switch sooner.

I work in the construction trades and just crawling in and out of the back of the P/U was getting to be hard on my body. About the only time I miss the open bed is when I can't just toss the firewood in. That and the fact that the back of the van doesn't 'self-clean' as I go down the road. LOL But it's a serious hauler with some nice creature comforts, and it gets about 22 mpg overall.
