I had to do it the other day and filled my work Utiliry truck up with about 50 plus gallons of water and a 20lb bag of ice I climbed into it then got out and let my buddy dump it over my head lol

WNYBuckHunter
Dan, people are challenging others to dump ice water on their heads and video it or pay $100 to the ALS foundation. I have been nominated 3 times now. Im still not playing.
Pygmy
Okay..I get it now... Thanks for clearing that up, John... Why not do something more pleasant, like sticking needles in my eyeballs ?
WNYBuckHunter
Hahahaha its not really that bad of a thing, just cold water. I think the point of it is narcissistic and absurd. If you really give a darn about the ALS foundation, then pay the money, dont pretend like you do and pour water on yourself just to get out of it, and bring attention to yourself. Mustang51js
A lot of people still donate after they do the challenge, I think it's a good thing since it gets more awareness and donations. I know a lot of people think it's stupid but if it helps with funding and awareness I'm all for it. I let me 3 year old son do it for me this time but I did do the cold water challenge a couple months ago but that was more of a local fire department thing
VT Outfitter
I am sorry, and I don't mean to offend anyone that has or will participate in the ice challenge. I am getting kind of sick of getting nominated on Face Book. I am just not amused with it I guess. To each their own, but I want my ice clean and rattling around in my glass at the end of a long hot day of work. Maybe I'm weird, but one thing I am not is a trend follower. Every time I see one of these videos, all I can think is "flock, little sheep, flock". This challenge lacks individualism. Though I have read that some people are taking it to the extreme with dump trucks and stuff. So I know there are people thinking the same as I, they are just choosing to look for a way to make it more original and I am not so props to you. So there is hope I suppose.
nyantler
I did it just to stop the nominations I was getting... I donate money to who I choose... I would rather give my money to a person or family dealing with ALS than give to any organization... I think its a great idea to increase awareness and they have raised a record amount of money for ALS... just wonder how much actually gets used for the research and how much goes to "admin salaries and fees"...

To be honest, I don't even know what als is. I thought it was some ice making and sales company. I agree with you on donating money to where I want to. My wife and I volunteer every year for Camp Takumta in South Hero VT. It is a camp for kids with cancer that's gives them a chance to go swimming, canoeing, play games, and hang out with other kids that wont ask them how things are going all the time. Its a place that gives the kids a chance to forget about the medical side of their lives for a few weeks. With many other volunteers, we raise 12-15 thousand with one event. Its a lot of fun and I look forward to going every year.
bubba
I did it today and donated 50 bucks to als also. Why not. One of the ladies I nominated had done so already and donated to the als also. So she said she would donate 25 bucks in my name to honor flight. So I told her I would match that also. When I see her this weekend I will give her a check too. Edited August 25, 2014 by bubba
WNYBuckHunter
I donate to the charities and organizations i see fit. Yes its good to raise awareness, but id bet most people dont donate, they pour water on themselves and throw it on facebook, nominate more people and thats it. My hats off to those that actually donated, weather they soaked themselves or not.
Elmo
Some people who dump ice water on themselves don't even donate. A lot of them don't even know what ALS really is. But if it wasn't for this phenomenon catching fire and becoming viral, they would never be able to raise the amount of money that they raised. Leonardo DiCaprio just pledge $7 million dollars to ocean conservation. But because he never made a viral video out of it, most people didn't even know he donated money and didn't join in and donate to ocean conservation themselves. So while there are narcissistic who never read up on ALS, never donated money, but simply pour ice water on themselves for their own self-promotion. What they do do is keep the "fire" burning. Lastly, as with most medical research charities, on their financial statement, only a tiny amount of the money actually goes to "research". This is due to what most people consider research. My wife works at a hospital for a research for memory disorders. Several doctors are working on this research along with doctor's assistants, nurses, IT staff and database administrators who compile the research data, lease for the lab space, the medical equipment that's rented/purchased that are needed to analyze the brain, etc. All of these things are listed as "staff and administrative costs" rather than as "research" but they are essential to the research. If you see a research charity where 100% of the money is going to "research" then you should ask yourself "who the heck is conducting the research because they're not paying anyone to do it?"

Its a terrible disease and I hope they raise as much as possible. I did both. I'm not looking for a pat on the back. I don't understand the hate. I guess there are some dumb teenage girls who have done it and don't even know why. The awareness is great too. Sometimes though all we do as a society as point and say "someone should do something about that injustice" and then do nothing ourselves. Even my $75 isn't going to find a cure. It helps but I guess I don't see the negative bit about this challenge.
Uncle Nicky
I think it would be more of a challenge if you dumped ice water on someone's head without telling them, and walked away without getting your a** kicked.
Fletch
I find no harm in it. If you do not want to do it don't. My kids have done it and now they actually know what ALS is or Lou Gehrig's Disease is. It certainly has been super for the ALS group as the donations have exceeded anything prior by leaps and bounds. I personally do not donate to them I have a couple other charities that top my list just because they are closer to home for me.

SteveB
Charity is a personal thing to me. I do what I can, but usually at a local personal level - not an internet fad.
