Al Bundy
My lab was out around camp for a short time with me getting the water going. Came back in and noticed dark spot.. Tick. Checked her over real good and pulled of at least 10 ticks. None dug in, all crawling around. Found two crawling on me, one on the wife. Had a small itch on my backside a few hours later..... Another tick. Have not had them this thick before. Be careful everyone. Seems to me thicker than usual right now.
covert
I expected it was going to be a bad year and that's what I've been hearing, but I haven't run into one yet. That's really weird because our place is normally loaded with ticks. Heck, two years ago I was playing in the snow in January with my son and found one crawling up his leg. NonTypical
They have always been a problem here on LI along with chiggers. For my dog, I get a collar for him from my vet. It's made by Bayer and I think it's called Seresto, or something like that. It lasts about 8 months I think. He gets one in the spring and lasts until Xmas. It works great. I never find a single critter on him and I don't have to remember to reapply every month. For myself, I buy the large spray bottle of Sawyers Permethrin from Cabelas or Dicks. I use it for work as well. It's scent free and supposed to be effective for up to 6 washes. I reapply almost every morning before work anyway if I know that I will be working somewhere whe it's needed. But if I don't, it still does its job. Al Bundy
I had a walmart type tick collar on her and the vet said it's better to use the cream stuff once a month. Since this thread is going this way, anyone know how the cream or collars work? I thought they eventually killed ticks, after they were on your dog some amount of time. I didn't think it repelled them immediately. If so, this cream is not working at all. Anyone know??

turkeyfeathers
Wife is a vet. Says topical creams/ointments for dogs are better than collars. Sawyers Permethrin for me as well. Honestly usually only treat clothes for spring turkey hunting. I don't bow hunt so I'm out there after a few frosts and colder weather during gun season when "hopefully" they're gone. HOUNDS77
I use the purple Python ear tags for cattle. I hook them to the collars of my hounds and I put one on the back of my hunting coat. Have not had any ticks on me or the hounds.
132 eight pointer
My nephew's girlfriend had a tick attached to her last weekend. Think she got it from hugging the dog. Went to Urgent Care because the tick's head was still stuck to her.Urgent Care told them she was the 5th person that weekend. She didn't need anti-biotics. nyantler
My southern tier lease is notorious for ticks and I thought this would be a bad year for them bow hunting... haven't seen one yet.. go figure
NFA-ADK
I use Permethrin for LI it seems to work well. Lyme is the reason I did not hunt LI for so long, scary stuff! I make sure I spray the clothes as directed and it seems to work well, especially when layered. Early season I duct tape my boots and sometimes wrist to the first layer. I change all my clothes at the hunting spot and double bag them when finished. Might seem excessive but I hate ticks and the diseases they carry really scare me.

Al Bundy
I found two lumps, red and inflammed, on my labs head this weekend. Also each area had a black thing, the size of a tick stuck to her fur. I picked them off and looked and looked. It COULD have been a dead dried tick or it could have been unknown black junk. She is up to date on her shots, including lyme vaccine. Hope like hell it works, if needed.
kzcycle
I've had really good luck with Preventic collars from the vet for dogs. They last around 3 months and can be had online for less than $20. Only negative is they only repel ticks, not fleas.
Two Track
I use Sawyers Permethrin on my outer layers. Only had 1 tick on pant leg so far after going out 1-2 days per week since the start of southern zone early bear season. Some places are known tick areas I was in, like Stewart State Forest. Even for warmer weather I still layer - moisture-wicking shirt and pants. Outer-layer pants are tucked into my boots, then laced up to help keep the ticks off. Hit the wrists and neck with some Deet to prevent crawling under the cuff or collar of my shirt. Peel off outer layers and inspect them - removing anything on them (ticks, burrs, seed pods, thorns) before heading home.
DirtTime
I have never had a tick on me until this morning. In a little over an hour I must have flicked at least 5 to 10 off me. It was like sitting on an ant hill. Getting some Deets. This was out of control....

Why no antibiotics if the head was burrowed ? I'd have her see or call her primary doctor about that IMO
