Grouse numbers

Any thoughts on grouse numbers this year?

I can tell you in these parts not so good. I haven't seen or heard one in at least ten years. The only place I have ever had any luck is up north. Used to jump them out of junipers on a regular basis.

I've kicked up 6 so far, but oddly they have all been deep in the thickest overgrown areas right along a swampy line of cat tails.

One of them is almost entirely white.  Thought it was an owl at first when it took off.

My buddy in Canadice has a "pet" grouse he's been keeping an eye on for better than a year now.  If I could load a 49 second video right now you'd see the little SOB take a nip out of my right finger.  Good stuff!

Any time you run the 4 wheeler up behind his house, you just shut the machine down and within a couple minutes here he comes, making this funny little chirping sound.  I have lots of pics and video..........

same exact thing at our place it's crazy. I don't want to shoot him so I stopped hunting them there. Lol

I haven't seen a grouse in years. Must be the coyote to blaim

I'd say numbers are pretty good in my area. We hunted them last year up in the state land and had some good action. I've been kicking them up all over the place behind my house. Ran two off nests back in turkey season.

Last one, last year in swamp...they use to be all over and made turkey hunting very enjoyable...listening to their drumming..I miss that...cut nearly all our popular to get the root suckering . I had hoped it would bring them back...but not yettons of young sprouts appearing all over though.

I seem to have a good number in 4O including the one who strolled across the road three feet from me without a care in the world.

I never see any in my part of 3J and 3M, but I don't spend much time in the woods during the summer and only deer hunt in the fall.

I am glad some are seeing good numbers. There is nothing I love more than chasing grouse with my setters. My uncle had a grouse that followed him all summer while cutting trees in his woods. Would jump up on the tractor seat while he worked. I believe it is quite common for grouse to do such things
