Bowhunters: Help Monitor Deer and Other Wildlife Populations

Participate in DEC's Bowhunter Sighting Log

Last year, 3,805 bowhunters from across the state participated in the Bowhunter Sighting Log and provided valuable data to aid DEC biologists with long-term monitoring of deer and other wildlife populations. Participants logged 186,110 hours afield and recorded seeing 120,067 deer, 47,772 turkeys, 2,698 ruffed grouse, 2,232 coyotes, 1,376 red fox, 1,323 raccoons, 446 fisher, 382 gray fox, 339 black bear, 128 bobcat, 7 river otter, and 5 moose.

We are gearing up for the 2017 Bowhunter Sighting Log and welcome new participants.

If you hunt during the bow season with a vertical bow or crossbow and have not participated before but would like to participate, send us an email ([email protected], subject: BowLog) by August 31. Include your name, address, hunter ID (back tag number), and the county where you primarily hunt.

I got one yesterday, first time.  I like the idea, but it seems like an outdated and unaccurate system if you ask me.  I'll do it, but I fail to see how the DEC can use the data from a lousy few thousand of these for the whole state...perhaps if they had an online version or something through the Pocket Ranger or HuntFishNY Apps.

The app, or website could interface directly with their database, which would cut down on human transfer error, and free up a lot of man hours from data entry...

Hmm...

Still waiting on mine... might have to reach out and request one.

I think if DEC went to an online entry form, it'd be easier to accommodate multiple hunt locations during the same day.

You beat me to it! I think it would be great to log into DEC from my stand and record in real time all they would need is a clicker option for bucks and one for doe. You could sit there and just hit the button. Even an app would be great if you don't have internet connection you could open the app once you get where you have signal or Wi-Fi it could automatically send info to DEC site. Allow for GPS positioning and bam they have a super accurate count of deer based on exact location.

I did not, Wasn't aware of this. Thought it was sent out randomly.

Drop them a line, if you want to participate.  The following is from DEC's website:

Want to help?

We need more bowhunter participation in: northern, eastern and southeastern counties, and in Suffolk and Westchester counties.

To participate or to get more information about the Bowhunter Sighting Log, e-mail us ([email protected]). Please provide your name, address, hunter ID (back tag number), a list of the counties where you hunt, and whether or not you have participated in New York's bowhunter log in any previous year. Thank you for your interest!

According to the letter sent with the Report Log , there were only 3805 participants in 2017 that sent in a report .

Suffolx & Westchester ------------ 127

Northern Zone ---------------------- 247

Southern Zone --------------------- 3431

That makes sense being that 3/4 of the state is considered Southern Zone and probably where the majority of where people hunt.

I too have enjoyed doing it for the last couple decades. Helps me really break down my bow seasons. I still wish they would let me do multiple entries a day since I frequently hunt two different places in a day, morning and evening.

agreed there.  I often hunt two different locations and might be there same amount of time.  Its interesting to look back at the end of the year and see the totals of how many deer you have seen and where.  I have done it for 3 years now.  Got mine in the mail a couple weeks ago.
