Zag
So I'm looking to build an enclosed deer stand that my Son and I can hunt from and also sleep in overnights. I'm torn between both options, Mr Buddy is cheaper and sent free but theirs something about a wood stove that's adds an additional element to the whole experience.
Jeremy K
I wouldn't want to screw around with wood when the heater buddy is so quick and easy.
DirtTime
I would go the Buddy Heater as well. For one simple reason, when hunting you need to get as much rest as possible, and feeding a wood stove for heat can get nerve racking. Better to be warm and cozy all night then have to get up to feed the fire. JMO.
Zag
So 2 for the buddy, I figured most would lean that way.
2012_taco
An enclosed deer stand big enough to sleep 2? Is it going to be elevated? I don't think i'd want to have to get enough wood up there to last all night! plus the room it would take! Mr buddy would be good just make sure you have adequate ventilation, and maybe even a battery operated carbon monoxide detector, it could be dangerous!

It will be elevated but I haven't decided on 2 twin beds above or just 2 recliner chairs. Deff a battery operated detector. I believe Mr Buddy has something built in so I'd have 2 different detectors.

Nomad
I know of a farm that uses heaters , but with 20 LB propane tanks in their deer blinds , those little green tanks don’t last all that long . Just don’t make adjustments to,the heater , I don’t remember off hand but guys try to get more flame or something out of them and that disables the low O2 senor . Just google ,” ice fishermen deaths , heaters “ for related info. The issue with the large blinds are one guy can’t cover or watch all four sides , at least the 16x16 one I know of Good read. http://www.woods-n-waternews.com/Articles-i-2009-03-01-192153.112113_Carbon_monoxide_poisoning.html. Jeremy K
I bought 2 of them and they pump out some serious heat . I'm still thinking of putting one on the front of my treestand to warm my feet.
Will_C
My cousins in Pa. have several large blinds. They have Buddy heaters in all of them attached to 20lb tanks. They last all season. Always have at least window open, so CO gas isn't a problem. Will
philoshop
The really tiny wood stoves like what would be required in a blind are an absolute PITA. You'll be spending more time feeding the stove than either sleeping or hunting. Trust me.
ny hunter
I think a wood stove is a great idea...But so much more work while building the blind ...
Zag
I just read another article from an hvac guy who said he wouldn’t ever consider sleeping in a room with something like a ventless heater. Would a wall unit vented outside be a little better or just sleep with a window open?
Zag
I've been reading more, seems like a vented propane heater is better than a vent free but a vented heater cost more than I really want to spend. If I were just using the buddy heater for a few hrs while hunting no big deal but I plan on sleeping in this during deer season with my son and don't want to worry about it. Seems like a small wood stove properly installed should be worry free and might cost less than a vented system. Thoughts?
DirtTime
Here's a third option, and you don't have to worry about the CM levels. Kerosene heaters. Pretty efficient, and the fuel isn't horribly expensive.
G-Man
Buddy heater with the 20lb tank hose.. I have elevated box blind and I can leave tank on ground and the hose attached in blind. It's only 5 ft off ground you could make taller by making shelf for tank on a leg of stand. I also use long wooden matched to light it vs the push and click and hold to get pilot to light and warm the thermocouple so it stays lit.. don't like the click game maybe close. The little green tanks just don't last long enough.

If you have a vent for air to move in and out.. with a damper co will not be an issue at all.. a simple slide vent would take care of it

Just came to me. To fit a wood stove, and room for two people to sleep, guessing folding cots, as permanent bunks would get in the way. So, by logic, at least 8' x 12', 8x14 would be better. Sounds more like a small cabin then a "blind". I know you may already know this zag, but if going with the wood stove make sure you get everything completed well before deer season, and don't forget you have to season that wood stove. landtracdeerhunter
That is some fort your building there. I'd be in that, more than just deer season. Never would get any work done, LOL . Anyways, for heat, get yourself one of them wood stoves they use on "Tiny House, Big Living." Then feed it with tiny logs. G-Man
If you did wood stove you limit shot opportunity as I wouldn't want to be the one to lean over it to get the angle.. plus your construction would need to be different .. distance from walls and non cumbustable materials not to mention stack and black pipe.. hauling fuel up.. ..
