motor starting sound in woods

For a few years now I will hear what sounds like a single cylinder motor starting and then quickly stopping.  This has driven me nuts. I thought maybe ground water pressure building and releasing because it is generally heard near a swampy area. It's like an an old tractor with a crank on the front that you would crank over to start but just as it starts it dies out like its not getting gas. Ive heard it a few times this Spring too. The sound is like this.

putt----------putt--------putt------putt---putt-putt-putt-putt-putt----putt------putt---------putt.  

I finally figured out what it is.  Anybody else know what it is?

Grouse drumming 100%.  Awesome sound ain’t it. As you described, sounds like an old farm tractor starting up. Heard one a few weeks ago

Roffed Grouse. No doubt. One of the coolest sounds in the woods. They also have made me jump, so many times, when they fly up!!!  Very tasty too!  When you can hit em............grin.

Shit that was no fun! It is amazing to think a creature produces that mechanical motor sound.  I almost feel foolish for not knowing this.

Even better to watch. A few years ago while waiting for a turkey I had one hop up on a fallen log at about 30 yds and drum a whole bunch of times. I was thoroughly entertained.

A few years ago , I was Turkey hunting at my son's property in Italy Valley . I heard what sounded like someone down below trying to start up a tractor . I wondered why the guy didn't fix the thing but was then told that it was a Grouse drumming . Felt pretty foolish .

I remember the first time  my wife heard a grouse. She asked what that was,  so I told her. she says she didn’t know that grouse rode Harley’s in the woods......

Usually mid morning I’ve noticed. Get out in the turkey woods come Tuesday and bet you hear one

This past bow season, i had a grouse perched on one of my stone walls for the entire day, same spot drumming for the ladies.
