Hunter007
What's the farthest distance a whitetail deer has been recorded traveling . Like for example if I got a friend has a big buck on his trail cam and he is 20 miles away from where I hunt is it possible That buck could move that far during the hunting season ? avg. joe
It may take some reading, but, https://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/projects/deer study may have your answer. There is a lot of info in the study.
dbHunterNY
that's a bit far. in more remote places with less people barriers they'll travel further. we've routinely had bucks travel several miles away as the crow flys they say (trail cam photos taken then buck killed that distance away). G-Man
4 or 5 miles is pretty common..there are always exceptions who go well above the norm.. killed a droptine that friend had a photo of 4 miles away.. he had 1 photo I had 12.. NFA-ADK
I have heard they travel up to 30 miles in extreme cases. I would think 5 would be average high with anything more being the exception. This is an article about one that went 10 miles. https://www.whitetaildna.com/tactics/2017/1/31/how-far-will-a-buck-really-travel
phade
3-4 years ago I had a really nice 4 or 5 year old on cam on a very small lease. Less than 48 hours later, buck was killed just under 5 miles away as the crow flies. It was in late October and the buck had broken 3 tines in that 48 hours as well. Must have been like that 70s/80s movie where the little gangs all came across one another in their NYC travels. The Warriors I think.
Bigfoot 327
There are on going trap/radio collar studies being conducted in Michigan's UP to better understand seasonal deer movements. According to the UP Whitetails Association website, one group of deer traveled 14 miles in one night. They say most of their deer migrate 28 to 32 miles from their summer and winter ranges. They have documented a few deer migrating as far as 60 miles!
NFA-ADK
This is a good one also! For example, in South Dakota, Illinois and eastern Montana study areas, where forests covered less than 35 percent of the landscape, young bucks dispersed on average 17.3 miles, and one deer in Montana traveled 132 miles. https://www.deeranddeerhunting.com/articles/deer-news/time-to-roam-what-to-know-about-whitetail-buck-dispersal 132 miles!!! grampy
We've had a few cam pic's, and sightings, of some of the same bucks, from the lake and farm properties over the years. Six or so miles apart as the crow flies.

sits in trees
I'm no deer biologist but around here we see the same big bucks in about a one mile area. My neighbors and I have scouted the same buck in an area of a couple hundred acres for years.

Pretty dark rack for a Hf place but hard to ever tell 100% anymore. I know if it was me it would have been documented by others before I touched it in the woods.
