Texas Heart Shot

Has anyone ever taken one of these ? I recall Chuck Adams was chastised for doing it and his take was " If you have confidence in yourself making the shot , then take it" .

I took a young friend hunting once and he shot a deer just as it turned . We were trying to figure out where he hit it until he started to Field Dress it . Right in the Bung ! It hadn't traveled more than 5 feet after the shot . Hiw wasn't intentional but nevertheless it was a Texas Heart Shot !

Can't say as I have. I would think it would do a good job, but a mess also.

I have done it unintentionally. The deer droped in its tracks but it was a mess to clean. WHen I took the shot the bullet went right up through the lungs and took out some of the top of the heart but it does go through the stomach first. I wouldn't take one on purpose that is for sure.

Had a choice of taking one once, that or back of the head..took the headshot to the horror of the taxidemist who's comment was what if you had hit the horns!!! lol...

I think I would pass on the shot . An arrow or bullet up the length of a deer makes for a mess and what a stink !

There are bundles of arteries in the intestine/spine region, that shot will drop them real quick. If you do it right, you wont hit the stomach. I wouldnt do it, Ive seen pics and it just doesnt look right.

The femoral artery runs right through the rear quarters, and a hit to that will drop them just as quick as a heart shot.

If I wasn't absolutely perfect with the shot, it makes me cringe to think of one of those nice roasts having hair and stuff shoved through all that clot-filled meat. As far as hitting a femoral, they really don't offer that much of a target either. You probably have a better chance at getting it into the poop-chute. Geez this whole discussion along with that picture is really quite unpleasant ..... lol.

once unintentional...was actually pretty sick on opening day of shot gun one year ..went to camp had a few does come in going down hill...shot one and it ran...being sick I didn't want to deal with a long tracking or recovery so took another shot as it was running away down hill...hoping to drop with a spine shot....OMG...was Mr B ticked at me...for that is the only deer I have ever not been able to gut.....the guys at camp got a laugh out of it but 30 years later...I think Mr B. is still ticked about it....lol

hmmm, some of the people that aren't ok with a long shot with the bow are completely ok with taking a dumb "ass" shot. Go figure.

Why isnt it? Its more than effective and will put a deer down in seconds.

Just because its hideous to look at doesnt mean its not ethical.

I'd take the shot if it didn't make such a mess. Sounds like it kills them quicker then a double lung shot. Sounds to me ethics has nothing to do with why some wouldn't take the shot just that it's a pain to field dress. If anything it would be more ethical to take the the shot and have the deer dead in seconds but have to deal with the mess.

I would not do the same with bow and arrow.

As for the mess.. gutting a deer is messy anyway.. so it doesn't bother me

100% correct. I accidentally shot a doe in the rear section last year, and hit the femoral artery. She bled out and died on the spot in a matter of seconds. If you hit a major artery like that, its the same has a direct heart shot.

Are you guys really arguing this ? Femoral artery ? Thats your target the femoral artery? What if you are off? Then you have a gut shot wounded animal running around. Or what if you hit the rump? All I have to say is WOW ! Ethics has everything to do with this don't kid yourselves.

I'd bet that if you put an arrow or bullet up a deer's poop chute , it would be a dead deer . Just an opinion .
