cnyhunter12
So I recently bought a house with some acreage and it has some great diversity of habitat. I am very poor at identifying trees and it is something I want to get better at. I numbered the trees on my phone to identify them, if you know what the tree is please reply! I may keep posting more pics of trees I find on my daily walks.

rachunter
Trees are a pain in the butt to identify. This book helped out and there’s a guy on here “Pete Collins” with some helpful YouTube videos Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cabin Fever
Makes it more difficult this time of year when there's no leaves on them to look at.
biggamefish
1-cherry 2-4 looks like it could be ash but you could be looking at a black walnut or butternut, basswood.. Really hard to tell with just bark canopy can help identify. 3-looks to be a poplar aka aspen. 4-maple Edited January 18, 2021 by biggamefish
stubborn1VT
1) black cherry 2) not sure, not an ash. I could tell you if you cut it down and showed me a cross cut! 3) beech 4) probably a white ash 5) hard maple

Farflung
this may help a little. Think "MADCAP HORSE". In the north-east, with hardwoods, you can look up in the canopy at the branching. If the twigs have the buds (next years branches) come off in pairs, that is opposite branching. (google "opposite branching" for a better explanation). The Maple, Ash, Dogwood, Caprifoliaceae, and HORSE are all opposite. The rest are alternate branched. Gives you a quick, coarse filter in telling trees apart. HORSE stands for Horse Chestnut, and Caprifoliaceae is members of the honeysuckle family (certain shrubs, vines and herbs)
Fat Dan
1. Cherry 2. Ash (probably dead or soon will be) 3. Beech 4. Ash (enjoy it while it lasts) 5. 80 percent sure it’s a sugar maple

cnyhunter12
I really appreciate the replies everyone! It is for sure very difficult this time of year and especially viewing a small picture which does not show the size, height, limbs, etc.
