My nephew and I were hunting together on opening day. Around 7am a doe came out of the Hemlocks and milled around for a few minutes. All of the sudden she ran off with her tail half raised. I told my nephew there was a buck following her and sure enough he stepped out a few minutes after she did. She was still milling around and he had his eyes fixed on her, which allowed for the noise my nephew made. LOL When the buck stepped into an opening he made the shot but the deer looked like he wasn't hit. He walked off in the same direction he came from. I waited a few minutes and went to look for him and he was down but still not dead when I found him. I waited till he expired and called my nephew to come down and see his buc, a nice 6 pointer. Still not sure who was more excited!! I'm a proud uncle to say the least!!4 points

Got my buck and doe opening morning minutes after each other in Chenango County. I could hear movement down in front of me so i hit the grunt tube. Next thing I know the doe came in to my stand on a rope and i turned her broad side at 20 yards and hit her with a perfect shot. She only ran 20 yards and dropped. I called my dad to let him know she was down then the spiker came in. I hung up the phone and took a shot and missed because i shot standing up without a rest. He ran a little bit and stopped so i hit the grunt tube again and he came back. This time I made sure he i had a good rest and hit him right behind the shoulder. Needless to say my season was done early.3 points

Don't want to hijack this thread, but if someone from the DEC aged your buck at 2.5, they are not very good at aging deer. Just no way that your buck is older than 1.5. Nothing wrong with killing such a buck, just saying that I've seen PLENTY of buck like yours over the years, and they were no older than 1.5 years.2 points

Dont buy the crap just hunt. What else will you do tommorow clean the garage? Even a deer that ate all night gets thirsty, or bumped by another hunter, or decides to get up and make thier way towards food in the afternoon.2 points

I'm not a devoted Catholic, but I go to mass as many as Sundays (Other than hunting time) as I can. My priest asks that we say the rosary every day, and I by no means do that, but I'll find myself saying a decat or two when I'm in my stand. Passes times, hope some good will come out it, and I usually can use all the help I can get. This past Sunday, I hadn't seen a deer the day before, and nothing was even moving around 7:15 am, so I said a decate of the rosary, looked up and said, "Ya know, all I want to do is see one, if you can help". And I swear, not a second went by and I hear out my left window, tsh, tsh, tsh. Down in the valley, a deer was coming through nose to the ground. Saw it was a buck right away, scoped him and saw he was at least a six or eight, and let him have it. He teamed up with a couple of does coming the other way up the hill, ran around and dropped. I looked up to God and said "Now your just showing off". Went over to it and it was a nice 7 pointer. I put a lot of time into the new stand this year. My wife bought me a used quad, first one I ever owned, spent some time setting up the stand, planting some no-plow areas, cutting firing lanes, helping with my son's area too. AND, get a deer this year, priceless. I learned a few things too, first, putting a deer on a quad, by yourself, is a real beotch. Fell over onto him a few times, but managed (picture looks when we went at it a few times). Second, I have to put up an overhang over the 2 windows cause when that sun comes up in the morning and sets, it hits you right in the face, and if you have to aim out that window, it's blinding.Sounds like a March project. And third, when all else fails, give him a try. "It can't Hoit" And my son's with a bow.1 point

I hunted behind the house last night where I started camming this summer. I was hopeing to run into Six-zilla or Kong but instead I got an oppertunity this morning at another farmiliar buck from summer and I was determined to take advantage of it! Good ole "Mr. Clean" is now a statistic of the regular season! He made his appearance about an hour into my sit this AM. He came in behind me somehow never winding me. I wasn't expecting any deer from that way but it didn't matter. When he came through at 40yds I let out a mahhh to stop him. He stopped in his tracks right behind a tree with only his head and azz viewable to me. He quickly forgot what he heard and took the last step I needed him to. I dropped the hammer and watched him run off like he wasn't even hit. I was confused how I could miss such a crack-shot...... BUT...., when he hit the 100yd mark he slowed to a walk. He flicked his tail a few times, walked another 20yds, and fell over dead as can be! The shot was perfect double lung. It just amazed me how a dead deer running still makes escape look so calculated and gracefull. I'm really happy to have taken this buck, but I'm feelin my enthusiasm for deer hunting may be wearing thin. There's a good chance this will be my last kill for a while. I may just need a break from hunting for a season or two. Couple shots of him from summer.. ...and the field photos!1 point

I have a neighbor who feels his one acre of land is big enough to hunt. The parcel is located in front of my house and has 4 houses less than 500feet. I caught him looking for a deer last year in my brush front of my house and asked him what he was doing he said he shot a deer in his yard and was looking for it. When I told him I felt he was not able to hunt there and that I did not want him hunting there with my house right up the hill in plain sight, he said "dont' worry I'm shooting into the hill". I said it doesn't matter my kids sled and play in our front yard..... Well yesterday I'm sledding with my daughter in the front yard and about 3:45 we went in for some hot chocolate. With in a few minutes I see some deer run into the back yard and was glassing them. A spike and 3 does. Then bang bang, I keep looking and see nothing esle. 20 minutes later the spike runs through my yard pretty well, but his left leg is hurt and bleeding, the deer runs into my other heighbors yard. Then I see this guys in orange movin in the brush on our property border. I yell down to him that we were just sledding there and I don't want him hunting there anymore.I saw the deer and its running fine and bla bla bla. Next thing I see is him in my yard tracking this deer. My wife comes home and stops to see why he is in my yard with a gun. He says to her "is that your husband yelling at me" she says to him why are you in my yard where my kids were apparently just sledding, hunting. He turns around and walks back into his prpoerty. After my wife and I figure out the best way to handle This I go to his house and his truck is there, lights on and he wont answer his door. I call and left a message have not heard back. We don't want probelms with them, but this is the last time I'm dealing with this guy about hunting. What I plan to do is talk with him and see if he agrees that this is the last time I want time hunting there. If he's not agreeable I'm calling the ECO. When I bought and built this house he called the town on me twice until my lawn was in because of straw washing down into his yard even though I raked it out both times, he called the town dog warden about wild cats in my barn when they trapped his cat in there. So, why I'm being this nice and not blowing him in I don't know. This is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 point

Well I spent all bow season stalking this huge 8 point I saw. I only had 3 incounters with him. Had a broadside shot at 45 yards. I'm comfortable enough to take that shot so I let him walk. Hardest decision I have ever made in the field. Opening mornig of southern tier gun I was sitting in my monsy stand. No action at all until 7:42. I had a sweet buck walk in at 25 yards. I couldn't get him to stop so instead of taking that shot I waited. He finally gave me an 82 yard shot. My .270 did some work on him. Biggest buck to date for me. It isn't the one I was stalking but I sure am happy with it.1 point

You didnt answer any of my questions. I don't care what you say. Hunting from the ground (no blind) with a crossbow is just as "hard" as hunting from a treestand with your Mathews. If you don't want people "messing up YOUR bow season", then get a good enough job where you can buy your own piece of property and don't let others on it!1 point

I shot this buck on Saturday around 9:45am. He came out of the pines to my north east and was heading south west at a slow walk. I watched him for probably 30-45 seconds before the shot. Perfect quartering on shot at about 60 yards, standing. He ran to about 17 yards from me and dropped. I pulled the jaw and will have him aged by the DEC people at some point as he is certainly not a young buck. He dressed out at 182lbs and had an 18" inside spread. These big bastards are really a pain in the azz to haul around. The normal hoist with the crappy thin nylon line isn't the best thing for getting a buck this big off the ground. The meat yielded from this kept my wife and I busy for hours. I used my NULA 50cal smokeless gun with Parker bullets. Shot him in Canadice. Here is a pic of my buck on the right with my buddies 10pt, also shot the first day with a LH NULA smokeless! We had a great day!1 point

Dude, all you have to do is look at the news....riccochets are the ones that get press. Remember the baby a few years back that got hit by a slug riccochet that went into a house? How about the trailer that was shot by a riccochet in Wayne County (Arcadia) a few years back, 2009 or so? An uninterrupted bullet is most often (MOST OFTEN) shot in a safe direction by most sportsmen. It's what happens after it meets an object that becomes uncontrollable - and is the REAL risk on non-hunting people from hunter shootings. Thus, tracing this back to the point of the thread - that's where the real danger lies here. You are discounting the hunter in your thought process. I hunt small parcels - if the guy is breaking the law, then it's a black and white issue. If not, nothing can be forced and the hunter is hunting by the law.1 point

Congrats!!! Its def older than 1.5 but there in lies the problem of point restrictions if it was 4 on a side this buck would pass on those genes till it died a natural death or is poached. I had a buck on camera that was a wide 4pt for at least 3 years on camera, the last year he was alive he was a 20 in wide with 18in beams and bases over 4 in spike!. was aged at 6.5 years old ..neighbors nephews got him that year. pics didn't lie was the same deer!, just bad genitics again in an area of high buck harvest it there were point restrictions he would of been untouchable... better off just looking for a mature deer the heck with points or spread!1 point

Quite frankly, it sucks. This is, by far, the worst season I've had in the last 15 years. I've seen all of one deer during 6 sits in gun, and I saw all of 2 during bow. It's horrible. Having said that, there are tons of them in peoples yards, naturally!1 point

Check a place called Buffalo Hotel Supply, I got a cheap one for @140 a few years back also a member named Culvercreek picked up a real nice one online (from amazon maybe?) for around $200-$300 last year. Actually he got it for free because they smashed it during shipping. www.buffalohotelsupply.com I deal with these guys threw work so I got a discount but their prices are fair.1 point

This has occured to other Orange county hunters. I am not a gun guy but over the years have used sllcon spray on a rag and just let it be rubed in and around the bolt and also I put on the barrel rag as well. But the stuff I use does not seem to have a high water content. I am sure everthing worked as soon as you got the gun back in the house. After unloading the gun I sure would again wipe down with a rag to get any oil off the moving parts.1 point

All the deer I have killed have been only by the grace of God. And when I start to think I am a great hunter he sends one along to humble me also. Nice Buck.1 point

I found a nice freshly built, pressure treated, ladder stand, the neighbor had built on our land. And I dont mean just over the line, I mean 500 yrds over the line. After he was told not to hunt there any more. I just happened to be doing a little trail clearing and found it. That machete I was using to cut brush made fast work of it and I piled it at the bottom of the tree. He called my uncle all mad during deer season and asked about why his stand was destroyed. My uncle told him because he apparently couldnt read posted signs and we figured he would get the picture with his stand piled up under the tree.1 point

"unless you're disabled, be an f'n man and use a real bow." HAHA. You shoot a Mathews. How primitive. What do you care what other people use? It shouldn't affect your hunting one bit. Does it really matter if other hunters are using a PSE compound or an Excalibur Crossbow? It's only a matter time before it will be allowed in archery in NY. It works fine in PA and NJ already. I went alone to a hunting camp in the middle of north central PA during archery season. There were 11 bowhunters there besides me. Many of them go to this outfitter every single year. I was the new guy and the only one who used a crossbow. Not 1 person had a negative thing to say me. The hunters were from Vermont, NY, NJ, and Mass. I hunt from the ground 100% of the time, I bet you hunt from a tree stand. Do you climb up the tree with your hands and feet or do you use one of those primitive climbers or primitive ladder stands? Wake up bro, your 300+fps compound and luxury treestand doesn't make it any harder to shoot a deer than me sitting on the ground against a tree with a crossbow.1 point

Mmmm sounds delicious. I made medallions out of part of the backstrap and marinated them in Salamidas State Fair spiedie sauce. Damn they were good. Grilled them for about 4 minutes on each side. My son who is 6, woofed down 11 pieces on his own. My daughter actually ate 5 pieces too. Now I only have 5 pieces for lunch tomorrow1 point

Exactly Doc... How am I to know if this particular hunter isn't one of the many that aren't safe? I don't.. and no hunter should take the chance when it comes to the safety of others in the area..period1 point

my 76 year old neighbor only takes head shots, bucks and does. doesn't want to waste any meat. all you ever hear from him is one shot then 20 min later atv to drag it out.. never saw him wound or miss a deer in 20 years...1 point

I have taken several does with head/ neck shots under 150 yards with bipod. To avoid the jaw shot i only take the shot with the deer straight on. Shoot low and still take them through the neck and spine. I have always dropped them right where they stand without problem1 point

OK 1st. I don't play video games....and I really don't like people that do 2nd don't compare a police officer firearms ...with someone who is a die hard hunter...most police hardly ever shoot there weapon, only to qualify...and most glocks shoot like **** you can't compare to a long gun...... now if you want to talk swat sniper that is a whole different monster 3rd....I I can't tell you how many deer I put down someone shot in the A** or shot in the leg....a bad shot is a bad shot whether you shoot the head or the ribcage but hell what do I know..... I hang my deer by the neck, and shoot 50 yards with my bow1 point

i have had bad experiences with the 2 wildgame trail cams. The first one lasted for about 4 months and then started putting a thick black line across every image (i even tried cleaning and wiping the lense). The second one stopped uploading the images onto the memory chip. I would hear it taking pictures and see the ifrared light go off, but there would not be anything on the chip or internal memory. I just switched over to moultrie and so far so good.1 point

There is no regulation or law that says your gun cannot be loaded before or after dark. There is no debate about it, it is 100% legal. It is only illegal to actively hunt or shoot deer before or after legal times. If you want to prove me wrong on this, by all means, provide a link to a NYS law or DEC regulation that shows it. I wont hold my breath, because no such law or regulation exists. As far as proof of sex goes, you do have to leave the genitalia intact IF you transport the carcass without its head for any reason. See the transportation section at this link... http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html1 point

personly i think that the crossbow should just be added to the list of legal instuments. there is no need to give crossbows their own season as well. remember when a muzzel loader had to be primitave and no scopes, had to use a ball and inline types where not sporting enough? or how about when compound bows found their way into main stream? years ago it had to be a recurve with out any mechanical devises to aid the shooter? personly speaking as the times change so do the ways and manner in which WE hunters go about our sport.... just my humble two cents.1 point

On opening day I went out at about 4:30 a.m., I sit up near a stone quarry where three logging roads come together on our property. Just after daylight two does walked through at about 80 yards away. Then they just stopped and looked hard to their right. They were looking at something that I could not see. One doe started to run. Then all of a sudden, there was this big buck running after the remaining doe. I scoped him and saw a big body with a big rack. I used a grunt call once to slow him down and then took the shot.1 point
