Thanks to a lot of early morning trips to camp over the past 3-4 weeks, I was able to come up with a good game plan for taking my son out today. The first gobbler sounded off ~80 yards from us, just about to the minute, when he's started in previous mornings. My son has only killed one other turkey, so he was pretty excited! I responded with some soft tree yelps. He got fired up! A red tailed hawk flew into the area and called and 4 gobblers went nuts ~80 yards away! We were pumped! Anyway, they flew down and started milling towards our decoys (hens), gobbling every now and then. The 4 jakes stopped at 35 yards and I wasn't positive if they were going to come in or follow the hen away that was with them. All of a sudden, I looked out the window of the blind to my right, and another hen was walking by 2 yards from the blind heading to the decoys (just about could have reached out and pet her, as she was so close! LOL)! Once the jakes saw this other hen going to the decoys, they walked straight in! Before we knew it, the jakes were ~10 yards from the blind, when I remembered to give my son the green light to shoot! He shot, the turkey dropped, and the next thing I knew, I was sitting in the WIDE OPEN!! I glanced over at my son and realized that the 3 1/2" mag tipped him over backwards in his stool (we were on a small incline anyway) and since the gun barrel was sticking out the window of the blind, it tipped the blind over backwards with him, so it went right over my head!! We laughed our heads off! A hunt to remember!!! Had a good year so far, as I called in a jake for my daughter during the youth season and she connected on her first!2 points

That's how it's been for me for the past couple of mornings too. They gobble a few times on the roost and then completely clam up when the hit the ground. The frustrations of hunting henned up gobblers...1 point

When I was boiling in march I was seeing mosquitos. Oddest thing I ever seen in march, well almost the oddest lol. Today the black flies exploded and the worse I have seen in years. 5 minutes outside and it was awful. I think certain powers to be could skip the water dripping on the forhead to drive a man insane and just send them to NY filled with a room of black flies to get them talking in a hurry1 point

LOL. I was peeling cloths off, down to my shirt sleeves at 9:15; by 11:30, both my arms were glowing, ouch tonight. Don't remember any turkey open where it was 80 degrees with bright sunshine. Back at the hunt tomorrow. I like onions.1 point

Bird numbers are lower. We got on a bird this a.m. and had him almost dead, but as usual, he hung up a mere yard or two too far to shoot in the timber full strut...right in front of my game cam...got two dozen pics to remember him by. He was the only tom or jake heard/seen today.1 point

I would enter him, add a nice gobbler to that and you might be suprised, and congrats, nice bird1 point

I think the danger is having your waders fill up in a fast current, not necessarily just having them fill up.1 point

Ha-ha .... Before you get too comfortable with the idea, be sure to pay attention to the 2nd part of that reply that deals with getting back out of the water. After all, eventually there will come a time when getting out is necessary. Of course I am assuming that you are talking about slipping into water that is deep enough so that your feet do not touch the bottom. Also, I'm not too sure how easily legs move (as in necessary swimming motions) when you have two heavy rubber bags of water that you have to move through the water. I don't think they are recommended swimming apparel. Anyway, if you ever get a chance to try it out, let us know how you make out .... lol.1 point
