  1. I am Happy, happy, happy!!!! Took a walk around scouting after my morning hunt today. Found 2 spots I wanted to hunt; a creek bottom and a ridge top. Went back this afternoon with my climber strapped to my back and headed for the ridge. Shortly before 6pm., I spotted a deer far off through the woods; maybe 100yds away. It was heading north along the ridge and I noticed it was a buck. I was east of him and pulled out my bleat can and gave it a turn. He stopped briefly and began walking again. Pulled out the grunt tube and gave it a couple hits. He stopped but my view was obscured. I stood ready for several minutes scanning for any movement. Was he still out there? Then, I heard the soft crunching of leaves. He had swunf wide and was coming in down wind. There was a Tulip tree adjacent my stand and the leaves blocked his approach. When he cleared the Tulip tree, he was right in front of me at about 15yds. I just remember thinking, "he's a shooter." I began to draw and trouble arose. My lighted nock pulled out of the arrow shaft. WTF! I got the knock back in and he was stopped, quartering away. I prayed the nock would stay inserted as I drew back on him. Just as I anchored, he began to walk again. Only a few steps before stopping again. Practice paid off as I saw an opening through the branches and thought I could thread it through. The Magnus Buzzcut made a complete pass thru and stuck in the ground; lighted nock still in place. He took off running and made it 40-50yds and stopped. It is now that I am hoping that I made a solid shot. Then, his back rump dropped slightly. Was he going to go down? That's just what happened. He got weak in the knees and woobled, then hit the ground. He was done. Just as it started to rain. Once I remembered how to use my phone(my hands went numb), I started calling friends and family. And my cousin, I was going to need help loading him up.

  2. Well Saturday evening was quite exciting for me. Hunting 3A in the catskills which is a very very sparce region with one of the lowest harvest rates in all of Newyork. Around 5:45 I was sitting at a crossroads coming off of a rock ledge and the lower areas by the esopus river. 2 does came walking through and then I saw him.. and told myself there is no way this is happening an 8 pointer is rolling in behind the girls. I wait for the girls to pass, I stand up and wait for him to come in. He puts his head down to sniff or something and I draw back.. he walks a few more steps probably 20 yards tops and gives me a perfect broadside. Arrow was through and through right into the heart. He lept and took a few steps. Wobbled and fell over.. game over. So I successfully got my First buck, and to that affect a Catskill buck =) Im quite pleased with how things turned out. Spent the afternoon today quartering him up, and getting him into the fridge. I will finish the butchering and cleaning up the meat before freezing them away. Spoke with a taxidermist and will be having him shoulder mounted since hes my first buck and bow kill and I could not be happier with the outcome. -Dors

  3. There's more important things in life than hunting. For example, you can role play with her. Have her be the doe and you can be the buck. Tell her you're in a rut and need to mount her. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems

  4. I harvested an adult swap donkey last night at 5:15, with my compound bow at 45 yards on state land. This was my second time out bow hunting this year. I had seven different deer come by where I was standing. I was hunting on the ground, with no blind. Eye ball to eye ball. The only thing that would have made it any better would be if I had used my long bow. I will use my long bow for the next one. Not to bad for someone 71 years old.

  9. Well getting all dressed up in front of my lease this evening. Had a "concerned" resident ask me if I was hunting in those woods and told me there were houses around me and people get concerned. 5 yes ago I would have told the dude to take a hike. But I took the high rd. Explained to him that I lease the land to hunt and follow all the nys regulations when it came to hunting. Then added if there is any consolation we bow hint this property only. He wished me luck and drove away. Then I made the 10 minute walk all the way in packing my climber. Get to the tree I want and realize because the guy interupted me I forgot to put on my safety harness. Back to the truck I went. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

  11. Every one would tag out if they had 100's of acres food plots and pattern the deer on their property via trail cams- I've gone years eating tag soup hunting public land - it's just the way it is- but a bad day hunting beats any day working or loafing

  14. One single boom from our blind this morning. Pretty good story with it too. I was up driving around after work last night just checking out some fields. I saw lights on at the camp up the road so I stopped to see how he had made out so far. Now this guy has his land posted and he means it, but I have always gotten along with him because I respect his land and right to use it himself. Right off the bat he asks if I have any youth hunters I am taking out in the morning. I tell him I have a young lady who is anxious to try and shoot a deer. He instantly tells me to get her there early for breakfast and shows me where a blind is and how to get to it without emptying the field. This is a guy I have known for years and not once has he invited me to hunt his land. Well, we showed up at 5:00 and we could smell the bacon as soon as we got out of the car. So after a quick breakfast and a lot of encouraging talk, we head to the stand. At first the understanding was she was only allowed to shoot a doe, but after seeing how excited she was, he said she could shoot a buck. At first she was excited about getting a buck, but before it was even light enough to shoot, she told me that Jim was nice enough to let us hunt his land and she just didn't feel right about shooting a buck the first time there. I thought to myself that my buddy and his wife may not hunt, but they sure know how to raise a kid. So it finally gets to shooting time and the field is empty. It is 34 degrees out so I tell her to just wait until the sun starts to hit the far corner of the lot where the apple trees are. A half hour later the sun finally reaches the apples and it wasn't ten minutes before we saw movement. Two young bucks go right to eating apples off the ground. I could tell she wanted to shoot, but she stuck to her guns and waited some more. A little while later I saw movement about half way down the field and two does stepped out looking towards the apple trees. They are only about 70 yards away, so it is a slam dunk shot as long as she stays calm. She slowly sets the .270 on the sticks, takes a couple deep breaths, and pulls the trigger. One doe runs, the other drops in its tracks. She takes the gun, empties the magazine, and stands it in the corner. She tells me that it was the most exciting hour she has had in her life, and then starts shaking and grinning from ear to ear. We hear the four wheeler start up and pretty quick, here comes Jim. We go out and load it up after getting a few pictures, and head back to camp. We walk her through the field dressing, and she gets through it better than some, and haul the gut pile to a pit already dug by Jim for just such things. He asked her why she didn't shoot one of the bucks and she tell him that it was his land and he put the time and money into it, so she wasn't going to take advantage of him. I could tell that this statement took him by surprise coming from a young girl especially. He promptly told her she was welcome to come hunt his land any time she wanted. So, it looks like maybe we have another hunter on our hands. I honestly didn't know what to expect out of her, but man, she passed any sort of test I could have thrown at her. Very enjoyable morning and backstraps coming for lunch.

  19. Does the neighbor own property? If so, tell'em your hunting on his. We had a situation a few years back just like yours. Told the neighbor if he's coming on ours, we're going on his. It all ended when we started hauling some fine deer off his property, and we made dam sure he knew it. Never trespassed again. Ended up selling the property to some real friendly people that don't hunt, but let us.

  23. Get one of those trailcams that text you pics, real time! You'll know when they're in the stand and can call the cops to walk out there with you and surprise them.

  24. I'd set up a cam up high looking down or angles in the general area you think they are coming in from Or buy one of the broken trail cams that people get rid of for next to nothing, set it up a few yards from your stand and then put your good one high up facing that broken cam and see if you get them either stealing it or what not.

  30. TeeBugg - Every hunt is different and there are no 2 the same. The rest of your family may have just been lucky. Luck has a lot to do with it sometimes anyway. If they had been in your shoes the same thing may have happened. Sometimes the deer is right there but a branch or tree is in the way of the vitals. You wait and then the deer turns 90% and is gone or they are just out of reach or the deer is right under you. Or another deer comes on the scene and then the deer you thought you were gonna kill changes direction and you never get the shot. I've been bow hunting about 12 years and have messed up at least a half-dozen times since and anyone who has bow hunted for a few years has done the same thing one way or another a few times themselves. This isn't point and click like it is with a scoped rifle. This takes patience, a lot of hours in the stand (generally)and sometimes everything just needs to align for it all to take place. They don't call the "the elusive whitetail deer" for nothing. Why not tell your self you are gonna go spend some time in the woods and if it all comes together then it will and was meant to be. Enjoy!

  31. Thanks Lawdaz! I read it again and got the same exact thing as when I first read it. I was referring to him stating that it would have been better if he had his long bow. As in, if it were with the long bow and not a compound, that would have been a lob. lol.

  34. 25-06 is a ground round with little recoil for deer, also gives you capability to lighter grain bullets to varmint hunt.

  35. Typically you would want it in an area where you expect a buck to come through to check up on the local does. If you can place it downwind of doe bedding zones and on the edge of cover, you could get the attention of some cruising bucks. Personally, I wouldn't use any estrous scent for another few days. Start with just plain doe pee, then after this weekend start giving it a few drops of doe estrous or buck urine.

  38. I was reading a book when at 5pm I thought I heard a grunt...there had been nothing but squirrels and that stinking wood chuck....ha the gun comes out tomorrow,,,,...I glassed the woods and there was a large doe and fawn...all spooked up...they exited stage lft...when I saw legs moving 140 yrds out...in files some fawn but absolutely huge doe with some yearling doe....Great they will be headed this way ...the fawn already were headed for the big oak behind the blind....when on the scene charges a rowdy 6pt...and he manages to chase all the older doe out of the area...then proceeds to feed...well this doe wasn't look too big to me until she had another doe and fawn walk by...the 6pt was headed our way and she kept a weary on on him...at 20 yrds she finally turned broad side and I let the arrow fly...it hit her and she nearly tipped over and then reared up and flipped over on to the arrow...it had hit her opposite shoulder...she never left that spot until I picked her up with the tractor.... But alas she then promptly sought her revenge...besides breaking the arrow....when returning with the tractor there were to good sized fawn standing over her ....geezzz....thankfully she had no milk so they will be fine and have each other....I glanced back as I drove away with her in the bucket...the two just stood on the edge of some sorghum watching us leave ...Oh well it won't taint the taste!

  43. this is going to take longer to type than the actual hunt lasted. hunted the first day morning and evening with plenty of sightings but none of the decent bucks showed up. second day I skipped the morning hunt because of bad winds for all my morning stands and having some work i needed to get done. the evening hunt I had 2 of the decent bucks at 20 yards all out battling for 15 minutes and no shot at either of them. last thursday am i went in to move that particular stand up another 10 feet, it was at 20 feet and just seemed to be too low for my liking. seeing as we were leaving for pa that afternoon I figured get in move the stand up, spray it all down and get out of there and be gone for a few days. wanted to hunt last evening but we didn't get back in time. this morning with the impending rains I didn't dare hunt and the wind again was iffy for my morning spots. as the day wore on and the rains moved out and the temps dropped to 50 and the winds picked up from the west south west it was game on.... but there seemed to be a persistant little disturbance to the west and I was watching it on the radar and finally I decided that it was going to move out over the lake and be good to go with no rain. My concern over the rain made me later than I wanted to be to get to the stand I moved but I figured if I hustled I would be ok. I have been watching this buck for 3 months from long range almost on a daily basis in the evenings and any mornings I didn't have to work. i parked the truck at 4:45 changed clothes and sprayed down with scent shield. I litterally jogged the 300 yards to my stand. hooked up the harness and bow and up the tree. I pulled the bow up knocked an arrow and hung the bow on the hanger and then hung my fanny pack on the tree. I turn around and start to zip my jacket when I look up and see him coming towards me! I pik up the bow and he is now just about under me and he walks behind me as I ease to full draw he stops at 7 yards broadside he raises his head and tests the wind. It was too late the green pin was burning a hole through the top of his right shoulder, almost like a laser guide for the wasp tipped xx78. at the shot he lunged forward and sprinted 35 yards before I heard him crash... I was in disbelief on what had just transpired, I was not in the stand 3 minutes before I shot him... I knew it wsa going to be close on time but I didn't realise it was going to be that close. im done till I head back to pa to hunt there.

  44. I stuck this 8pt last night at 5:45 pm. All night long there was a light misting rain and it had the deer moving! I had a doe and fawn came in really early. It was the smallest fawn that I have ever seen this time of the year. Covered in spots and couldn't have weighed more than 40lbs. Shortly after I had a total of 6 does work their way in. They all made it within 20yds but I had no intentions of taking a doe yet so I let them all walk. The rain stopped, the sun went down and here he comes!! A nice 8pt worked his way down the lane a presented a 10yd broadside shot to me! Yeah I love it when a plan comes togther!
