Well, I was able to break in my new rifle yesterday morning on the last day of the regular gun season...12/08/13! I ended up taking an 11 Point Buck at 9:40 AM hounding after a doe!5 points

I took off of work on Monday to get in one last day of hunting this year (I'm busy for the rest of ML season). After seeing no shoot-able bucks all bow and regular season, the extra day in the woods was well worth it. Small 8 pointer, but it's the biggest buck I've ever shot in 3H. The wound on its leg was a previous injury. My shot went in from the other side of the deer.4 points

Simply put that age class is very young and inexperienced no matter what size the rack spike to basket 8 included. They tend to throw caution to the wind and let hormones and instinct to mate take over. This lack of self preservation gets them into trouble. Older deer tend to be more wary and smarter. In so far as an accomplishment it depends on the hunters level and expectation. If it was the hunters first deer that is a great accomplishment and a perfect start! Hunting is what you want it to be. If getting any deer is good enough for that person then its great! To each his own I say. One of my hunting partners will shoot anything and I will congratulate him if he gets a spike, doe or big buck. I pass many deer but do not expect this of my hunting partners as some are meat hunters... Be happy with your harvest you are more successful that many. Everyone starts somewhere and if a spike is your first buck be proud.4 points

I totally disagree. How did anyone ever clean a gun before all the gimmick cleaners hit the market. Clean your gun with a solvent, then clean it with boiling water and patches and see how unclean it is with the solvent. Getting the water out is simple. It is called patches. Convenience is not always better. I have been using smokepoles since early 70's and have not lost a barrel yet2 points

I hunt in the northern zone and I hear a lot of follow up shots with rifles. I guess these guys must be hunting with those less accurate rifles. HA. What if a guy is good enough to shoot an arrow at 100 yards through a shotgun hole? Wait he shoots his arrow through the bologna sandwich then hits the shotgun hole, then the rifle hole. He wins.2 points

I hunted this weekend with no gloves on. If I did they were thin jersey material that I used during Bow season. The only reason I can do this is using a hand muff. I have had one for 6 years and it was the best money I have spent on hunting gear. I have never had cold hands using it and no bulky gloves. The one I have is neoprene so it is water proof.2 points

After a fruitful bow season I had a relatively good gun season. 11/16 AM: 11/25 PM: 12/02 AM: With my 4 archery harvests 2013 provided a personal best of 7 harvested deer, including a mature archery buck. I still have my reg tag to use on either sex for the late bow season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

The trophy in the shooters eyes, who cares???Kill what you want to kill and be happy about it.If a 1 1/2 year old spike or 4 is what makes you happy and your not in a AR area then drop the hammer,or set your sights as high as you and whatever deer are available will let you.1 point

that was part of the my original post. It's only as good as the guy behind the stock... at least I think that's the phrase that I used.1 point

Actually fellas the gun is only as accurate as the guy that is shooting it... regardless of what it can do at the range... throw in all the other elements in a hunting scenario and mister hole puncher becomes mister how did I miss that deer with this "accurate" weapon. I might not shoot a rifle as well as a shotgun and vice versa. I know all my guns are right on off the bench in a controlled environment... out in the field the more accurate gun is the one that killed the deer.1 point

I figured that's what you meant. I know lots of guys that say "oh I got a big doe", and clearly it is a 1.5yo. Not bashing them by any means, just some people don't know the traits of an older deer.1 point

So now we are going from a discussion of deer hunting in NYS where the vast majority of deer that get shot are within 100 yards to varmint shooting to 1000 yards?? Yeah, then MOST rifles surely won't cut it. And even if the rifle cuts it, the shooter probably won't.1 point

God was just about done creating the universe , but He had 2 extra things left in His bag of creations , so He decided to split them between Adam and Eve. He told the couple that one of the things he had to give away was the ability to pee while standing up. " It's a very handy thing " , God told the couple , whom he found under an apple tree. " I was wondering if either one of you wanted the ability ", God asked. Adam jumped up and blurted , " Oh, give it to me ! I'd love to , please oh , please oh , let me have the ability , It'd be so great ! When I'm working in the garden , I could just stand there and let it fly . It'd be so cool , I could write my name in the snow . Oh please God let it be me who you give that gift to , please God let me be able to stand and pee in the snow. Eve just smiled and told God that if Adam wanted it that badly , he should have it . It seemed to be the thing that would make him happy and really wouldn't mind if Adam was giving this ability. And so Adam was given the ability to urinate while standing in a vertical position. Adam was so happy that he celebrated by peeing his name in the snow while laughing with delight. " Fine " God said , while looking into his bag of leftover gifts, "What's left here ? Oh yes.......multiple orgasms .1 point

Who said that? Spikes are dumb. I thought most of us agreed on that? Fool a mature doe during the rut? Now that's an accomplishment. They never have their guard down. Even a big buck can be caught thinking with the wrong head. Not putting down shooting a spike. To each their own trophy and goals. Just an honest answer when we're comparing age of deer and intelligence.1 point

Any deer is a trophy to me.I have a few 8's and a 10 on the wall but I still get my heart pumping when I match wits with a any deer.1 point

As long as it was your handwriting she shouldn't have a problem.1 point

Spikes are mostly 1.5 year old bucks. A 1.5 buck regardless of how many points it has, is one of the dumber deer out there during their 1st rut. Still not a simple stalk.1 point

A friend of mine and I have been out since this morning. Saw a few this morning but no shots. Now we are sitting over the last field of corn on the farm. The farmers combining it. About a half hour ago three does popped out ahead of the combine I put one of them on the ground. Sitting until the end of the day hoping to get maybe one more.1 point

Phrases like that are for idiots that don't know the difference. I wouldn't hand over a gun to a kid that don't know the difference. But as an adult, we have our toys. A gun is one of them. So is my car, and some other unmentionables. Ever heard "a kid in a candy store"? Wonder why some adults use that phrase when they enter a gun store. Is there really candy in there? Think outside the box Belo, quit drinking the anti-gun cool aide. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

okay Cuomo... The term toy is loosely used and there is no need to be worked up over that. Handling such as a toy is a different story... But reference to a toy is just common vernacular when buying many things.1 point

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the layout of your land. The cover you're trying to rid the area of sounds like it would make a great staging area by itself already...... not to mention the benefits that stuff provides naturally through the four seasons by itself. Getting rid the nasty stuff might be counter productive to any plot you want to open up. Any other options for a plot location nearbye that wouldn't destroy the thicket? I'm not a plotter, but I have seen a few pop up here in recent years that actually made the habitat worse simply due to being very poorly thought out.1 point
