  7. Hunting 9H tomorrow. Darn near 4 feet of snow there. Packing in gear on daughter's sled so I don't sweat on way in. I think the snow is too light and airy for snowshoes. Going to sit in the dark pines and dig myself in a ground blind. Calling for 9 degrees and west wind of 11 mph. Should be more comfortable to sit in there than stand, and snow tends to be not as deep in there with canopy of white pines. Second to last hurrah with Tuesday closer and my last hunt then. Hopefully my theory pays off that they'll be moving thru there.

  8. Did some duck hunting yesterday with my youngest son. Mallards, Black Duck and Geese were everywhere! Here's a photo of Anthony with his first ever duck. It was the only duck to set into the decoys. All other shots were at quite a distance. He will be eating Duck Cacciatore with wild rice for lunch today. What a great moment... I am proud to have passed on the love of hunting to both my sons!

  10. I think I'll take the bow for a walk in the snowy woods. I don't expect anything other than a lonely snowy walk. Which is fine with me.

  11. That's what it is. Thick brush buts against hardwood ,kind of an L. They come out of brush turn west into woods.

  12. My by far best spot was actually my father's old treestand. He built a wooden treestand along the side of a hill that looks down onto a big level wooded area, that was in 1980. Right when I started hunting he told me that this was the spot I would be going to from now on. I have to thank him a lot because at this location is where I shot 3 of my 4 deer. For 33 years this spot has been consistently one of the best in the area and I'm grateful that my father passed it along to me.

  15. This pic was posted on another site by a guy I personally know. He drove by this roadkill in Putnam County. Face looks like coyote, but hair coat is nothing I've seen before. I've seen pics of black and blonde yotes, but not red like this... Thoughts? ? Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

  16. Man, I wouldn't think there will be many (any) bigger Steuben County bucks killed this year. Pretty cool deal, and that should definitely be drying out at 170+ so it'll go into the record books! Weight and age if you know????

  17. My wife kept me up late last night and even with my decent 4wd truck I didn't feel like navigating snow covered roads 25 miles at 5:15 am again...so I'm gonna hunt the public land this afternoon and make my way to the lease for the last time tomorrow. If you woke your wife you are a braver man than I! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. Well the weather man was actually right. Got about 8". I was figuring we would get 3" from the track record they have had. Looks like I am stuck at home with my turbo front wheel drive beater. I wish I had hurried up and put my truck together (changed clutch). Now do I wake the wife and see if she needs the Xterra?

  22. Its clear that you are again speaking out of your butt ! You have no idea what is happening out in Suffolk County NY regarding the problem that the overabundance of deer have caused. You should perhaps research the subject before making such asinine comments!

  23. Oh, what drama!! So why the hell didn't you help the cause on LI, and kill that 4 point and doe that you told us you passed up in a couple of your recent posts?? I am all ears. You are so full of it, just like most of these bow hunters on LI who pass deer after deer waiting for that big buck to come by. They could care less about helping control the population, all they care about is the bragging rights they would have with that big buck. You guys failed, thus something more drastic needs to be done. The general populace out there thinks the sharpshooters could get the job done better than you can, and I would say they are correct. The sharpshooters surely won't be passing deer up like you do! LOL

  24. Went out first thing this morning in Cortland county, it was frigid cold. I was a little late and as I'm walking to my stand I see a doe about 100 yards away, right in the trail near my stand. I dropped to my knee and was zeroing in when another deer winded me and blew, off they went, So we went to a friends house where he decided to put us in some stands. About 45 minutes later my friend shoots and I can't see a thing. Then all of a sudden all hell breaks loose. 7 doe come running right to me with a large adult stopped 20 yards away I squeeze trigger and my Knight muzzle loader is froze up, won't shoot!! She walks a few steps and I start yanking on trigger to no avail. I finally use my left hand to punch my trigger finger (mind you folks, I am absolutely frozen at this point) and it touches off. I hit it back about a foot but she went went down. the other deer allowed me to reload but when my used up shot gun primer hit the metal stand they looked up and saw me, taking off. Second year in a row I was successful with all 3 implements. Something I'd never done in 30 years of hunting. I'm done, gear frozen solid in the truck. Doe hanging in barn. I've had better years but my best season was always my last....

  26. If I can get out of my driveway tomorrow am I'll be heading to my lease for the last time this season. After that I have 2 more mornings nearby at my trusty public honey hole. It's been a fruitful NY season and my personal best in terms of number harvested, but worst in terms of sightings, I cashed in on limited oportunities. I saw zero bucks at my lease during shooting hours...and only saw 1 big mature buck anywhere all season, saw him twice and harvested him. It follows that I saw zero coupling in any form for the first time in 6 years of hunting in CNY. Meanwhile I have plenty of sign and nighttime pics of a large healthy herd of big ag deer. I blame all the long standing corn and plentiful masts with the mild bow season and incredibly harsh early gun and late bow/ml. I am starting to already mentally prepare for NJ Xmas archery...setting my stand and mms camera, and some legal nutritional encouragement on Xmas eve and hunting 26-28th. I will also be back in Feb for late bow after Tompkins Dmfa ends in January. Still I feel a bit of despair that the day to day phase of my whitetail hunting is nearly over, back to home maintenance and renovations, and lots of archery practice... 27. Did the "hail mary" of hunting. Got done watching the kids at about 2:45. Got to my parking spot a little after 3:00. Pretty much sprinted up the mountain through the "no deer land". Got a few hundred yards from the feeding area where I planned to sit and slowed it down. About 50 yards from where I was going to sit I jumped a huge deer. Couldn't see horns but wouldn't be suprised if it was Mr. Big. And that's all I saw. If I had only asked grandma to watch the kids when the wife was working...

  31. Seems pretty clear to me. Can't use a rifle in a non rifle area during deer season to hunt furbearers.

  32. It sounds like if you are in a county that allows only shotguns for deer hunting, you had better not be out afield hunting with center-fire rifles that are .22 caliber or larger for anything while any legal deer season is in progress. However, this does bring up a question about target practice with such rifles. How do they distinguish between hunting and target shooting?

  33. Took a day from buck hunting to fill a DMP tag on the last day of regular season... nice two man hunt planned by my good friend... his smile was priceless as he approached me after the kill... " I love when a plan comes together" were his first words to me then a hand shake... first hunt of the day and some venison to share... the deer was just a bonus to a great time hunting with a close friend.

  39. My Birthday Buck, first day of a 26 day hunt. I think I jumped him earlier in the day. Called in with a doe bleet and grunt tube. After using the can I heard a grunt 30 minutes later and responded with a grunt. Twenty minutes of him making rubs just below me (I wondered what that noise was?) he came into view for a perfect broad side shot. Felt like a gift from heaven above, my 3rd Buck out of Moose River and the highlight of my ADK hunting adventures. What a Birthday gift!!!

  40. Took this 8 point buck on Tuesday the 19th. I was sitting on the ground against a big old mossy stump, near the edge of a patch of hemlock. I had just looked at my cell phone to check the time, because I knew it was getting late. The time was 4:02 PM. Figured I would sit until the very last few seconds of legal light. It was going to be my last day of rifle hunting of the year in NY. Before I put the phone back into my pocket, I look up and see movement. I immediately see a good sized rack about 120 yards away. The deer is moving at a good pace, from my right to left, not just tip-toeing through the woods. I knew I had to make a move and fast, or he would be gone. I threw my phone onto the leaves to my right, and I jumped up. I moved forward about 5-10 steps to get behind a big hemlock. I rested my Marlin 30-30 on a broken branch to the left side of the tree. I look for a shooting lane he may pass through, and wait for the buck to come into view. Within seconds of getting my rifle rested, I see the buck come back into sight. Another second or two later the buck was in the shooting lane I was hoping he would move through. I made a loud bleat sound by mouth to get the buck to stop, he didn't hear it. I try again, this time very loud, almost just yelling, and he stopped in his tracks, broadside, and swung his head to look in my direction. I placed my crosshairs on him quickly, and squeezed the trigger. He didn't run far, first about 15-20 yards in the direction he was going, then spun around and started running back the way he came, maybe 30 yards. He paused for a second and I was about to fire another round, but he tipped over and fell. He weighed about 130 pounds dressed. He's also a red head! When I took him off the pole, he was frozen stiff and standing on his own...

  42. Our deer hang on opening morning. This was by 11:00. Should of had a nice 8 hanging but I rushed the shot and my neighbor took him. Hanging are two doe, button buck and another buck with broken antlers. Friend thought it was a doe. We did tag it as a doe because the 1 antler was 2.75 inches. 1st time hunter and newly weds were together and they shot the button buck!!
