  2. I made a homemade roller to pull behind my ATV. I used a heavy duty plastic 55 gallon drum. I cut a hole in each end in the center of the drum. I then pushed a metal pipe slightly smaller than the hole I drilled. Then I made a frame out of leftover hardwood floor planks to connect to the metal pipe on each end and around the drum. Then I made a drop pin connection point to hook onto the ATV draw bar. I fill the drum half full of water through one of the screw caps on the top of the drum then replace the cap to hold the water in. Water will leak out where the metal pipe goes through the drum until it brings the level down when it will stop leaking for the most part. The drum half full (or so) with water and the hardwood frame weighs about 200 lbs. It works well to pull over a well prepared food plot bed to push the seed down for good germination contact.

  3. Animal loving anti hunter ! I ive been going for two impinged shoulders, after a few visits you get to know each other pretty well which helped. Today I told her that the day before I shot my bow to see how it went, ( three arrows only all in the center dot of the block at 20-25 yards) I could tell by her look all I needed to know. She could not hold back ,first saying "why do I choose to hunt them in such a cruel and painful way,as bow hunting causes great suffering. That was great to hear as I knew she did not know much just the bs from the PETA types, this allowed me to educate her while respecting her opinions. I got to explain that bow hunting was more of a challenge and that slob hunters don't want to do all that hard work bow requires, Bow hunted deer are " natural ,in there patterns and behaviors, the challenge is figuring it out. That a large percentage of deer I have bow killed never even knew they were shoot with an arrow, just snapped their head up looked around and went back to feeding, that most fall over in sight of my stand. She thought we lost most hit by arrows or that guys just shot them and never looked for them or just cut off the antlers. I got to address all those concerns. I told her I have killed deer by bow shotgun, rifle ,handgun, muzzle loader and car. That bow was a clean fast kill if both lungs were taken out,the car was the worst, and gun is clean and fast but some will tend to take risky shots in gun ,and we need to change that. What I,learned, she really liked that I said a little prayer after taking a deer, giving thanks for allowing me to,take an animal in a clean fast way. That she was very concerned with deers being hit by cars, and after one talk almost admitted hunting may be a better choice ,that the misconceptions of leaving deer to rot ,bad shots, pin cushiony deer, slob hunters is our biggest obstical to over come because her thoughts were not close to reality ,but by letting her talk then calmly explaining the facts and truth,it went rather well. Now we'll see if she fixes my shoulder in time for now season! My draw arm is mostly ok it's the left arm that hurts just holding the bow at full draw.

  4. I found a old disc harrow this last spring. It was in a hedge row, long forgotten, rusting away doing no good for anyone. It is a 6 disc solid wheel harrow, 3 discs per side, with adjustment levers for disc angle. I had to weld one of the axel supports and grind off 95% of the bolts holding it together as most of them were rotten. I rebuilt the weight boxes that set over the disc's with some lumber, two 2x4's and some bolts to hold them down to the frame. I purchased one 80 pound bag of concrete mix, then poured the concrete into two 2.5 gallon buckets. I put one bucket on each side to help push the disc's down for stiff dirt on new plots, or plots that haven't been harrowed in many yeas. I planted 10+ acres with this newly re built harrow and it worked great. Its a bit tricky to back up but it can be done. I got stuck a few times in soft muddy areas and had to unhook and winch the harrow out. But mostly, it was great as I was able to get to places with the ATV and my re built harrow, where I had to use hand tools in the past. Plus on those plots that were too big for hand tools, and I would haul a tractor with a tiller in, now I can use light weight equipment. What a big time and labor saver all around. I'm very glad I found that old harrow. The price was right too, free. The farmer that owns the property where I found it, is also one of the properties I manage for guiding deer and turkey hunts. He and his wife were so appreciative of the hard work and land improvements, that they would not take a cent. So, keep an eye out for those old pieces of small farming implements. It could be a cheap investment on a tool that is worth is weight in gold for maintaining and building food plots. Good luck!

  5. Chapeau par excellence!! Scent will make 'em run every time. Movement will make 'em run half the time. Just being there will make 'em run sometimes. (If it was easy, it'd be called shopping.) Noise will make 'em curious, but, human type noise will put the other two senses on full alert. Best be on your game for that! Any two of the above, in combination, will also make 'em run every time. Plan accordingly.

  10. How about they start with knowing how many deer are killed a year before they worry about the herd size. I just now had a guy here looking at the deer and talking hunting, he says he has for years applied and received doe tags only to fill them out saying he killed a deer and reported such. I have heard and know of many that fill and never report. We dont, as hunters always do the best to help ourselves but i believe a check in for every deer killed and return of tags at the close of season. That would change the view of a few people!

  16. definitely a must for turkey hunting but not necessary at all for deer. shot my doe last year on opening day of bow after she walked in a straight line directly in front of my stand and stopped while almost touching the ladder. shot all my deer at less than 20yds and have only been busted from movement. staying still is key. camo isn't really necessary either but I like it anyway. plenty of deer were killed before camo

  17. About 3 years ago, I was sitting in my stand and watched something yellow come bobbing towards me through the thicket. A squirrel hopped out into the open and I could see it was carrying an ear of corn. It was a dead afternoon, so it kept me amused watching it hop around burying it in the leaves in several places, before digging it up again, and finding another/better spot for it. Probably did this 10x! It finally decided to bury the ear of corn ~10 yards directly in front of my stand, in the middle of the deer path! It kept looking up at me as it was covering the corn up with leaves, as if it thought it was doing me a favor! I couldn't help but chuckle, and think, "Dude! Are you trying to get me into trouble!?!?" Could just see myself trying to convince an ECON officer what REALLY happened! Damn squirrels!! LOL

  20. Trees are already losing some fair size nuts. Took a couple pics while turkey feather molt hunting. Lost my down load cable somewhere, LOL. Hate when that happens. Looks like another nice crop of mast here. Not quite as good as last year, but a fair second. Will make the hunting tough like last season, as one never knows where to sit.

  21. No I never said it was and never will,I was just put off by the way you were brought in to a deer hunting seminar and a major part of it was not.

  22. He is one of many deer farmers that have learned much from his deer. Just watching and listening to them is a schooling in itself. Just another one of the enjoyments of having whitetails!

  25. I have seen Charles Alsheimer on three occasions and thoroughly enjoyed myself. There's a bit of a religious theme behind his talks but the deer information far out-weighs any religious overtones. The deer knowledge is second to none and I highly recommend this seminar to every deer/bow hunter in NY. I was a novice bow hunter until I saw Charlie for the first time and purchased his book, "Hunting Whitetails by the Moon". This was a great read and greatly explained what I was seeing in the woods every fall but didn't understand why. I now read this same book every September to get the juices flowing and I've killed several archery bucks utilizing the tactics learned. You won't be disappointed!!!!! P.S. - Is deer hunting and religion a bad thing??

  27. yes ..added to salads and this year it's a PITA...I mean every where...if it was a bit droughty I would not mind as much..it can act as a cover crop to retain soil moisture...but we have more than enough moisture...lol...

  28. Early bow season last year I was in my stand watching deer pass by in my shorts and no shirt. I doubt a facemask or paint would have done much good besides making me look like a super hero, lol

  29. face mask and I hate it..every single year I end up with a raw upper lip due to moisture...but I have allergies and there isn't much that doesn't make my skin rash out....besides...bugs drive me out of my mind until the first hard frost... I tried the facial hair thing...but alas...Mr B wasn't happy...hahahahaha

  33. The man's knowledge of deer behavior is unparralelled. I have seen him 4 times (and going to this one) and learn something new every time. He has always been approachable and gives me time when I strike up a conversation. He does give a testimony, his story of how he came to faith but it seems trivial to get hung up on that (especially when it's sponsored by a church - nothing hidden) when there is a long night of deer talk, photogrophy and chances to win a lot of hunting gear. I have used his knowledge in my own hunting. Made my own rub lines, scrapes.. etc. and it has paid off. Take it for what it is, a night of talking and learning about deer. That's good enough for me.

  35. Definitely impressed with the quality of the pictures taken. The field in front of the camera was suppose to be corn but the farmer got the corn in too late and it really didn't make it. The field will be planted with whitetail institutes winter greens next week.

  36. LOL. That is funny .. I can picture it now..."What do you mean, corn will not sprout in Nov?" Maybe a person could get a destroy permit even, because the deer are digging up and destroying your seed.
