  1. I really think xbow users should be required to sit through the class. I just can't fathom the logic behind the current set-up. It's not even a "being fair" thing at this point, it's basic education to operate and hunt safely, ethically, etc.

  2. Just to give you all a heads up, we will have a deer contest this year. It will most likely be similar to how we do the Spring Turkey Classic, with a points system, etc. More details, prize lists, etc will be coming up soon.

  8. My .02 First I am NOT against crossbows. I have however RESIGNED, after 33 years, as a BHEP/NY Bow hunter instructor over the FACTS. Back before many of you bowhunted it was stated that archers were wounding too many deer, and had a bad perception from both hunters and non hunters alike. Sooooo along came the MANDITORY BHEP class. This class had to be taken by ALL bowunters, no matter how long you had bowhunted before. I took the course and learned from it. Shortly after that I became an instructor for region 9. Fast forward 30 some years. Another type of Bow is legal to hunt with in NY (other than the vertical bow). However if these bowhunters want to kill deer they only need to buy a Big game,MUZZLELOADER stamp, read and print out a "certificate" and these new "archers" are ready to shoot deer with a BROADHEAD tipped Arrow (BOLT)!!!! WHAT??? What happened to 10 hours of class time showing all NEW ARCHERS where to place shots, how to blood trail, treestand safety etc. etc. This is not a Crossbow vs.vertical bow argument this is a When did we disrespect the game to the point that we allow hunters with no formal ADEQUATE TRAINING to hunt DEER?? I am appalled at the legislatures of NY for enacting such stupidity. I know it is NOT the fault of the DEC as they had to enact what they were told to do. Fire away.

  11. the list of reasons are long and been repeated over and over. It is what it is. Some arguments are selfish, others have merit. There's no point in really talking about it anymore. At the end of the day I hope it brings more kids into the sport. I also hope these kids give the vertical bow a shot as they grow as hunters. I'd hate to see the vertical bow phased out.

  12. They are super cool looking birds for those of us who aren't used to seeing them every day. I saw this one out on Grand Island a few years back. It was one of the first pics I ever took with my camera so the quality is not very good. Very skittish compared to the blue herons that were also in the area.

  13. Picked up the rug today, came out good. Also looked up the 2013 bear take from the DEC stats. and she was the only bear taken in the town I hunt and was 1 of only 8 taken for all of Otsego county. Find myself very fortunate to harvest this huge sow , she went 260lbs. Now just waiting patiently for DEC to send me her age. Here's a picture of her laid out on grass then up on wall.

  14. So I've been dying to go hunting since a young kid and no one in my family hunts so It's been hard to but since I'm grown enough I can't let another season pass me by. Problem I have is I'm from queens and it's a process to get my rifle license I'm going to get a compound bow for now and am taking a bow hunting course to get my license. Does anyone from here have a rifle license with prior minor arrest record ? I'm just confused on to what to do, when I get my bow hunting license do they give me tags for deer or turkey when I'm done or is there another process for that? Also do I need to take a hunters safety course before the bow course? Where do you find places to hunt and where can I learn how to break down a deer after I hopefully hunt one? I'm sure I have more questions as I go on just trying to get this rolling as to hunting season is creeping up fast. thanks for any of the help

  17. You guys are failing to see his need for this law. Think of how many of his highly intelligent supporters may be killed by posing with a live, huge, man eating cat. He is only preserving his vote count. In short "let's keep those who don't think too clearly around to vote."

  18. We feel you up here. They recently finished replacing a couple bridges that we lost when Irene hit us in Orange county. After Irene hit, I couldn't go anywhere except into town through 3-4 inches of water. All the major roads were under water, and a mudslide blocking the NYS Thruway. Couldn't get to work for two days between the flooded roads and downed trees. At least we had a heads up to check/clean the gutters before Irene hit.

  20. I just like to be inclusive. I can see the steam rising from his head already. lol We should also have a prize for the neatest job wrapping a deer in plastic before placing him in the carpeted bed of your sissy truck (culver if you win that bad boy buggy?) - Nah, we can just dirty Phade's truck.

  25. It will depend. If the drag will be difficult I might pass. More importantly, I feel morally responsible to use any animal to the fullest extent if I take its life. For a bear, that means it will be a rug. With it costing upwards of $1K to make a rug, I have to think if I'm willing to spend that kind of money at the moment. For me, it'll also mean I have to buy a gift for the wife while I explain to her why I just spent $1K on a bear rug. If times are lean, I'll pass. If it's a great looking bear, I'll whip out the credit card.

  30. Adult mentor must maintain physical control over the junior hunter at all times while hunting. This means the mentor and junior hunter must be close enough to talk without the aid of a radio and must be able to see each other. So I guess if your tree stand is close enough (within 20 or so yards so you can talk) As for the DMP- Junior Bowhunters may use DMPs during the special archery seasons and during the regular season. Hunters may transfer or receive up to 2 DMPs from other hunters (see Consignment of Deer Management Permits for instructions). You must be 14 years or older with a regular big game hunting license. Junior bowhunters who are 12 years or older with a junior bowhunting license may also apply. I didn't see anything that stated they can't transfer a DMP. I think you are ok on that. Enjoy the hunt. I did this for many years, seeing a kid wide eyed in the woods is great-seeing a kid get their first deer is wonderful. Something you will never forget. It was really great hanging two stands in one tree. I was able to guide the jr hunter through different situations.

  35. I agree that crossbow hunters should have to take the bow hunters ed class. You can thank NYBow for that, as they were the ones standing in the way of just calling crossbows another form of archery equipment in this state, as they are in other states.

  36. Im with ya. I just disagree that "new guys" shouldnt be able to throw their two cents in, or that anything he said would be considered dredging up a dead topic. The first permanently legal bolt has yet to bring down a deer. Id say it makes it a very relevant and current topic. For someone that has recently expressed concern over political threads driving people away, i wouldnt think you would want to be calling new members trolls or the like.My point was more along the lines of, if you dislike them as much as you seem to, why participate in almost every single thread about them, call it a dead topic, etc. I get it though. Btw, the safe act comparison isnt an extreme like rocket launchers and no regulations lol.

  42. How the hell did this post get resurrected after almost 3 years?? My last pic was from 2007. I was talking to a neighbor in 2012 about bucks that seem to fall off the face of the earth and mentioned this piebald. He showed me a pic of another neighbor (~2 miles away) with the piebald that he killed during gun season in 2007! Sure enough! It was this one! Guess that explains his absence over the past few years!

  43. To add to what Phade so eloquently said; there is no such thing as a cull buck unless you are hunting behind a fence. Consider these facts (some have already been mentioned) * It is impossible to predict what a mature buck's antlers will look like based on his 1st or 2nd sets of antlers (a study was performed in Texas where they trapped and tagged spikes vs. 8 pt yearlings that showed no significant difference in B+C score at maturity, "once a spike, always a spike" is total BS) * Most if not all yearling bucks disperse to new ranges other than where they were born (Mother Nature's anti-inbreeding defense plan), so that means that buck fawns born on your land will be someone else's mature bucks and vice versa. * Does contribute 50% of the genes to the fawns (I always wonder if I am killing the mother of a future B+C buck every time I shoot a doe). * The heritability of antler genetics are poorly understood, even by deer breeders. (It is unknown if lack of brow tines is a simple dominant/recessive gene or is influenced by multiple alleles.)

  45. Culling free range deer is like peeing into the wind. Cull is a term free range hunters use to kill deer with a rationalization that makes them sleep better at night for shooting a young deer before they would otherwise do so. Nothing wrong with shooting a young deer at all. Just own it and dont hide behind genetics, or some other made up excuse to not make you feel bad about it in front of other people. If he trips your trigger, thats all that matters.

  47. They're legal. At no point are they barbed. Nothing in the regs prohibits curved blades. I know lots of guys who've taken deer with these and the'll be on the tips of my xbow bolts and arrows this fall
