I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:5 points

16 year old daughter's first deer. Shot it at ~20 yards, he went less then 50 before dropping. Single lung shot. Right side is 4 points, left side broken off above brow tine. Smile on her face says it all.5 points

Although I believe that there is no excuse for mistaking a hunter for a deer in the woods... not all of the incidents of hunters being shot are because they were mistaken for a deer... in some cases the shooter could be shooting at a deer and hit a hunter somewhere beyond the deer... if you are wearing orange it is much more likely that the shooter will see you beyond the deer, if you're wearing camo probably not likely at all...especially if you are stationary... a simple orange hat could make the difference between getting shot or not getting shot... wearing some orange during the gun season shouldn't have to be mandatory... if you're the gambling type and stupid enough to believe you're safe with camo on when bullets are flying then you get what you get... I feel sorry for the guy that has to live with shooting someone beyond his target that just wasn't visible because he chose not to be. Not being able to tell a live deer from a man or deer being pulled on a cart.. inexcusable.4 points

I've wanted to hunt a Pere David's Deer since I was a little kid, and since they don't exist in the wild, a preserve is the only way to do it. This past winter, I found this place in PA & booked a hunt. I had to work a lot of overtime and cut back on other things, but it was well worth it. The place was awesome, and the people really went out of their way to make it great for us. He's had a breeding herd of Pere Davids for many years, and they are as wild as anything in a preserve can possibly be. You can't approach them, and they have excellent vision & hearing just like any other deer. They rut in May / June, and the roaring noise they make is so awesome! I was able to kill this bull last week, from a pop-up blind with a single 27yd shot. Say what you want about preserves, but this animal was at the top of my list, and there's no other way to hunt them. We hunted hard, and I feel it was a real hunt. I dont regret it and I plan on going back next year. Overall, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had.2 points

I really am enjoying the thread and thanks for posting it, but regarding the size, age or whatever that you feel you should be taking, you should never feel that you need anyone's approval but your own. Do not let others influence how you feel about hunting and whatever kill that satisfies you. We have too much of that going on these days where we spend way too much time worrying about what someone else thinks we should be hunting. If you can break that mindset, I think your enjoyment of hunting will jump a few hundred percent.2 points

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/28471661 Bought one of these, it arrived at my door in 2 days. I have not used it yet but it looks to be well engineered. 300 lbs. capacity, folds for easier storage.http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/284716612 points

All I can say is don't let other people influence what deer you take. If you have the tags and you decide that you want to take a small buck or a doe ……go for it. Most real hunters will be glad for you not think any less of you. Good luck.2 points

I personally look more for deer size than rack size. I would shot a bigger bodied 6 over a smaller bodies 10 any day of the week.Passing on a bad shot was by far the best thing to do. You will be rewarded soon2 points

I agree 100% with Culver. I did the same thing. Set my standards to 8 points, right off the bat. Stuck to them and ended up with a basket 8 as my first buck. I took crap from alot of people for letting small ones pass before I shot my first buck. I kept telling them not to worry about what Im doing. Im proud of that buck, to alot of guys hes nothing special, to me he was though. I waited a long time and passed on a ton of smaller bucks. He hangs on my wall, and will always be the most special one on it to me.2 points

And then they will post on here about their lost deer and terrible day and expect to hear our sympathies. There should be respect for the animal and only good shots should be taken1 point

36 years here as well and 38 with a bow. Still have trouble sleeping the night before. Sharing them with my son and dad when he can make it.....priceless!1 point

They teach you shot selection in hunters education. I remember them saying NO HEAD SHOTS, NO BUTT SHOTS. It's even on the test. How the hell did you guys pass the test, and still take butt shots ???????????????1 point

are people really that obsessed with taking a buck that they would shoot one in an area that is more than likely going to destroy a large amount of meat?1 point

We have about 60 " in orchard park, makes for real quiet walking but an awful lot of heavy breathing and cussing.1 point

This my hunting season in a nutshell. In stand no shots at all. out working today and this one comes up dogging a doe. Stood there at 15 yards with a 60 inch mower running. Maybe that my problem I'm not hunting from a mower. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Please don't shoot a deer up it's butt hole. They will die and they're almost impossible to track since they won't bleed. Welcome to hunting deer. If you really want to see what bad luck is (or see what can go wrong ) take up bow hunting. Imagine the buck of a lifetime walking back and forth, nose to the ground but 75 yards away. No bleat or grunt would get him closer. Good luck1 point

The outfitter and the hunter in that picture need to thank me kindly for saving them from the wrath of you monsters!! I'm sure some of you might have already put in a call to the DEC. LOL1 point

Congrats on a great first buck! I'd rather read a story like yours with a hunter who is genuinely excited about his kill no matter what the size, over some bone crazed bozo trying to squeeze every last 1/8 of an inch out of his rack!1 point

Got my bear in 2010 and ate all of it. Mine was 300 pounds and living in the forest eating mostly nuts and berries. I know guys who took bear that lived near a garbage dump, and that really affects the taste of the meat. A bear tastes like what it eats. It's also very important to cool the carcass down as quickly as possible. The meat will start to turn quickly if it isn't cooled fast. So gut it quick and skin it in the woods if it is warm out, especially in the spring. If it's big, quarter it and carry it out. Cook it well and you will not have to worry about anything. It is also a good idea to trim all the fat off the meat when you cook it as the fat tastes gamey and will make the meat taste that way as well.1 point

Biz, My Dad got me a pair of sheds from a Pere David's when I was little. I've been obsessed with them ever since. It was really hot out. We had to skin it, quarter it, and get it on ice right away. My girlfriend is also my taxidermist, so luckily she was there and she took care of the cape.1 point
