  1. I’ve been reading this post for a while and understand that everyone wants a better deer herd and greater number/size of bucks. I just want to share an idea that I don’t think was brought up in this post, if it was I missed it. My one word solution to better NYS hunting is LOGGING. Log all the NY State lands. Do it responsibly, but do it. If you get new growth (grasses, shrubs)on state lands, you’ll see deer populations increase vastly. You'll also see grouse again, more turkeys and other shootable critters Deer can’t eat what they can’t reach. Grasses don’t grow if the sun doesn’t get thru a mature canopy. Just a thought

  2. Apparently, according to the NYS Troopers union, they shouldnt be driving cars with more than 125k miles on them. Silly me, I thought that police departments had mechanic shops that fixed the cars when they broke, and that these cars racked up a whole bunch of miles rather quickly because they are on the road so much. So now they are going to be replacing the cars every year or two? I thought the state finances were not so great. Now they have to come up with funds to refresh Troopers cars more often? I wonder where that money will come from. Hmmm, they wouldnt be looking for the tax payers to foot the bill would they? http://www.whec.com/news/stories/s3868524.shtml

  3. Why does everyone think the dec is limiting crossbow to last two weeks of archery?? The politicians did that, the dec pushed for full inclusion in archery, the special intrest groups pushed the politicians to limit it... until nys residents wake up and add a right to hunt amendment to the Constitution and put in place a game comission to regulate it we will always have the politicians messing things up as interest groups push their own adgenda,if the even vote to let us have a season.....
    3 points
  4. what????? it's only two weeks regardless of when the start date is, is it not? I think archery runs a week later this year, which in effect bumps the crossbow to a later start date..........you didn't lose anything.

  5. The deer were on their feet this morning... I had this 4 year old that I call "Wannabe" stop by just prior to sun up. His tines are still bulby on the tips and it appears that he is trying to add small G4's... A short time later the rest of the boys showed up. I've been hoping to get pics of several of these bucks since first spotting them out in this field a month ago...

  6. I use this one without issue. Checks perfectly with my balance beam scale. I trickle into it and I do find that it react quicker if I trickle into the center of the pan. (Boy that sounds like a typical 50 year old problem...lol) http://www.midwayusa.com/product/175512/frankford-arsenal-ds-750-electronic-powder-scale-750-grain-capacity?cm_vc=ProductFinding

  7. Oh don't be silly, Do you really expect people to understand the regulations and season dates and be REPSONSIBLE for their own actions? Come on, it is way over the top to expect someone that wants to hunt with a specific weapon to show a little self restraint and save a tag for that season. You must know that if a deer walks out there is no choice other than you MUST shoot it?

  12. not sure i understand..Police are not the same that's for sure. police are generally more educated, higher paid and I would assume more professional...but the cars are basically the same as you stated. just staying if a taxi can last 500K miles, a cop car can last 200K. no need to get rid of cop cards at 125K miles

  13. It all depends on where I am hunting, might tent camp at the truck, may pack in and bivy hunt ...all depends on what's in the cards for the location. Don't over think it, get some equipment and then put your name on an OTC and just go do it. The only way to learn is by experiences. And FYI I am not far from Hudson at all. 17. I don't know I assumed the manual one would be more accurate. more of a question. I'm an electrical engineer so I tend to think electrical stuff is broke until proven otherwise. lol like I said I haven't gotten into it yet. I got RCBS shell holders for only .223 so far more so have gotten components. was told they fit into many presses belonging to people I know. also I was thinking about an RCBS single stage or turret. was told they are universal but some fit better in some presses and not as well in others. figured I was covered enough to buy them.

  18. just found this on the web...not confirmed, but working in NYC its seems accurate. According to the Taxicab Factbook, the average NYC taxi drives 70,000 miles per year. The average age of a NYC taxi is 3.3 years. If we assume that a taxi will likely last about 6 years, then you're looking at a 400-500K miles If a NYC taxi can last 500,000 miles, so can NYS police car.

  19. My truck sees all kinds of salt, it has almost 100k on it and not a spot of rust besides where some idiot side swiped it and I havent replaced the fender yet. This is just plain bogus union and government nonsense. Its no wonder our tax rates are so high, they spend money like drunken sailors. (awaiting pygmy's drunken sailor comment...)

  20. I do believe that just simply washing the car will be more cost prohibitive to make it last a little longer than a year or two. those things cost around $50,000 for a car. forget the SUV they'll probably get many of. don't want them driving around trying to do their job in a clunker or something with crazy amounts of mileage on them but still a year or two?? I've just recently here around Albany started to see very few of the old Crown Vic's. that's going to be a hike in budget.

  21. You’re kidding..right? My Camery has over 270,000 miles on it. It’s a 2001. The car is still running fine and I have no need to replace it. It got its first tune up at 200,000 miles and is on its second battery…still has its original; shocks/struts, exhust, ect...passes inspection each year This car gets absolutely NO regular maintenance and was drive on NYS roads it’s whole life. I suspect the NYS police drive their cars harder then most, but they should be able to get more than 200K out of each car (assume no accidents)

  22. A ML is super sonic. A cross bow isn't and given the noise difference between the crossbow and a compound I think most people have this issue with your account of your hunt. It was very fortunate that the deer stayed put for you. a small movement of 6" could have cost you that deer in the time of release and bolt flight.

  23. Biz steered you right with the Bowsite and MM forums...Lots of good info there..I have put together a number of good hunts using mostly info from these forums.. However, some of the bowhunting snobs on Bowsite won't talk to you if they know you are a rifle hunter. Good luck !

  24. Not too muggy here, what a wonderful breeze!...rain is due around 3pm today...that should help with the weed kill so I can start disc/dragging that area...BTW turkeys took out nearly all the grains in the Max Attract plot peas ,beans, chicory and clovers looking good though. Went out last night with my head lamp on to walk the dogs Holy Cow it's a wonder we can breath at all and now I know why the house is so dusty...All the corn fields are in pollen the air in front of my light was just thick with pollen and dust particles...a bit eery looking actually...

  26. The kid is going to take the course so he can hunt... but still think it makes more sense "physically" to let the younger kids hunt with a rifle over forcing a bow on them... more mistakes can be made with a bow in terms of the shot I think... just my own history and what I hear from others... in other words.. more bad shots with a bow over a gun...

  29. Not here... I just disced the upper WW area for planting later and it is dark and has great moisture ..I also disced and planted the upper horse shoe plot and that was in even better shape...combo of HR/TTT/PT and a little red clover. We have a pretty good storm front moving in ...so I am going down to the Max Attract plot and lay down some extra red and ladino clover with a sprinkling of turnips... I found soybeans sprouting in the new alfalfa plot...not sure if they are the re-seeding ones or the reg ag ones that were in there last year and survived...either way I'll take it!!. The kidney and pinto beans are 4 in. tall all ready in the Max Attract plot. They are turning out to be a pleasant surprise as experiments go. The lane way and a trail plot are dying down nicely for a late planting...

  33. I also pulled a card from one of my cams. Got a bunch of yearling and 2 1/2 year olds. The last 2 pics on the card, from this morning were of this guy. Im pretty sure this is Hooks, but need a head on shot to be sure. He is a 4 year old this year, and the backline and belly look about right for that. He always has his brows. Im not sure how much more growing he has, but he fits my bill for a mature buck. I passed on him 3 times as a 2 1/2 and had a 10 yard encounter with him last year during bow season. Hopefully this year he gives me a shot.

  35. This buck was a awesome 2 year old six point last year. He showed back up post season around x-mas but had apparently been shot and already shed his antlers... I wasn't certain that he had survived the brutal winter until I spotted him one time in early summer. Well, he's alive and well and not looking too bad. You can see the scar above his shoulder...

  36. Yes, as I said, trophyism is just one item in a long list of emotional items that the antis use to beat us over the head with. If you want to know the most effective tool in the Anti-hunting arsenal, I would think it is hunting imagery. It is a powerful weapon to stir emotions to their max. It is something that we should use more frequently. We argue logic, encyclopedic stats, and mind-numbing facts and figures until whoever we are talking to begins to stare off into space in a semi-conscious, coma-like condition. I wonder what would happen if somebody dragged out that video that we had here recently of the starving doe that could hardly hold it's head up and was obviously in excruciating pain. Or how about a fox that has disgusting matter crusting over its eyes. Or maybe a raccoon staggering around with rabies or diphtheria. Perhaps old pictures of that deer yard over at Honeoye where a field was littered with mounds of snow-covered dead deer, or the starving deer barely standing with that blank stare that won't even move out of the road. Or how about the good old video of the moose that is being torn to shreds by wolves piece by piece. And on and on. These are all very emotional and riveting images that show that there is no such thing as a critter simply dying of old age, peacefully in its bed, in the wild. It puts the fate of wild critters a bit more into focus and shows that the lucky ones are those harvested during hunting season. Want to shut an anti up? ..... just pack your cell-phone full of those images to show them the alternative to hunting. Never mind the facts and figures and stats and studies. They just tune out with those things. Use their own tactics against them. Work their emotions for a change.

  39. Well, you bought the crossbow knowing (or should have known) full well that the season encompasses the last 2 weeks of bow season. Just like someone buying a full size truck knows, or should know, that they are not all that fuel efficient. BTW, you should also know that you can use your crossbow during all of gun season, and all of late muzzleloader/bow season as well. Hope you didnt smack your head too hard.

  42. And so, my fellow animal serial killers, there you have it. The rhetoric of the animal rights people. The images and words of these people have got to have impacts on those not involved in hunting. They have to be gathering supporters, and more money to wage these kinds of campaigns. Given that we hunters are a documented shrinking minority in society, can there really be any doubt that these people are a formidable force to be reckoned with? We tend to paint them as wackos, extremists, and people that no one ever takes seriously. Somehow those images comfort us and make us feel that no one really takes them seriously. Those rationalizations make us feel that it is unnecessary to join and support any pro-hunting organizations. We find it difficult to imagine a society that would outlaw or force impractical limits on our sport hunting. Well, right or wrong, I can imagine it. These people are organized, single-minded, and dedicated. They do not engage in in-fighting and bickering. Once they have been convinced by videos such as this, they become part of a force that makes our paltry, half-hearted defenses and campaigns pretty much a joke. These people are politically connected and know exactly how to become a huge thorn in our side. I take them very seriously. Yes, I do consider them whackos, extremist and a bit deluded. But you will never find me calling them harmless and no threat to hunting.

  43. If I could add one thing the "summer scouting" list, it would be to observe first hand before you go tromping through an area to randomly hang cams. You got a good chunk of land there for observation if you can slip off a few nights after dinner to just watch how things unfold in those fields from afar RIGHT NOW! Grab the binos, some skeeter spray, and anything else that makes you feel comfortable and just pay attention to where they are entering and leaving the open spaces in front of you. That's all subject to change over the next two months or so, but since we went to the October 1'st opener now, there's always hope you can nail a target buck by back tracking his summer patterns early in the season. I'm not gonna get into dissecting your map any further than saying I'd be concentrating on that BIG GREEN area right now to learn how he dots connect from there.

  47. Twenty-nine years ago when I moved into my house, I found a stash of old tools in the garage. Many were rusted, some, being old and from an age and day when they made things to last, I brought many of them back to life if they could be useful to me again. One item was an old, rusted axe head in the bottom of a wooden milk crate, I took a wire wheel brush and removed all the old rust. The head was forged, and had a "Plumb" stamp on it. I knew I had something worthwhile. I took all the rust off, and refinished the metal head with cold-blue. I procured a new handle, fit the end in the axe and secured it with Acraglas, gave it a BLO finish, a coat of wax, added a hole at the end for some paracord to wrap around my wrist to keep the axe from slipping. It's sharp enough to shave with. If I change anything when this handle breaks, I'll look for a longer one, with a bit more curve to it.

  49. Can't say I've ever pulled an over nighter in the ADK's, but I have spent a good amount of time in the dark in unfarmiliar territory. This may sound like a trivial suggestion, but I've found those inexpensive reflective tree tacks to be very valuable around my campsites especially if you'll be exiting the immediate sight for any reason.(bathroom breaks, firewood collection, water runs.., etc) Chances are you wont be carrying your GPS when nature calls in the middle of the night, and all the flashlight power in the world wont help you find your way back to camp if you accidently get turned around in a thicket. Mark a few trees during daylight that fan out from your camp leading to these locations and you just might save yourself the frustration of sleeping in the fetal position while everything in the forest tries to suck the blood out of ya until the sun comes up!
