Bucks in a bachelor group 8/12/15. Starting to pay off by passing on small eights with bow and gun. Many of them will get whacked of course, but that is OK. Makes some other hunter happy! But if they get through to become 3.5 year olds, then they become literally something to shoot for. The small eight gets a free pass this year. If I need the meat, I'll shoot a spike or a yearling or a small doe.2 points

When I finally get it all figured out, I promised myself that I would take up a sensible, soothing sport like golf where there is no frustration and I don't have to wear weird outfits anymore.2 points

Out in Western NY, I had planned on doing some field work today, but we got socked with a ton of rain last night. A neighbor kid who just graduated from high school this year suggested a fishing trip, so I took him up on it since it was too wet to do much anything else. He ended up getting a few nice smallies (mmm... fresh fish tacos for dinner tonight), and his first ever Niagara river musky. I caught just one monster of a sheephead myself, but the excitement on his face reeling in that big lunge really made the trip worthwhile. We ended up being very thankful for that rain that kept us off the fields today.2 points

I know a guy who was prosecuted many many years ago for a salt lick and lost his license permenatly. Just a FYI. Not sure what the penalty would be today but I don't worry about penalties that don't affect me. I know many are against baiting but if it was allowed in high population areas where they want deer taken down like LI it would help. Many other states use bait to help population control and it seems to work. I also find it funny how so many stores have this and yet it seems to disapear from the shelves. Yep many out of state hunters lol, right.2 points

Most of the time I don't have enough time to look a deer over good and determine if it is a 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 or whatever age it could be. You guys/gals really have the time to do that?????? Damn.........................I'm doing something wrong.2 points

Although I've hunted that high up, I never felt very comfortable doing so. Mostly stay on the ground these days.1 point

I have no dedicated rifle for such purposes. I carry same rifle I would normally hunt with (Remington 700 in 308 or CVA Wolf 50 cal muzzleloader). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Avon gun is about 45 minutes from downtown, South of Rochester. Small shop, and limited inventory but can order anything, very knowledgeable old school vet owns the shop. Beikirchs is a large shop, good knowledable salesmen with a lot of instock options.15 minutes East of down town. Both are good options1 point

I just buy 2 SD cards for each cam, and swap them out. Then I take the cards with and check them at home or when I get back to the truck.1 point

I like the Nockturnals, they are easy to use, easy to install, affordable and just plain work. If you want to pony up and get the best ones out there, go for the Firenocks, you can get those ordered custom to what you want them to do.1 point

For the past several years I have been using the same rifle for stand and still hunting. Ruger M77 wood stock in .7mm-08. I wouldn't consider it light weight but its not bad. When I hunt near my house, its shotgun only so I use my old Winchester 1300 topped with a 1 1/2- 4 1/2 x32. Thats actually a fairly light gun.1 point

I don't have any REALLY light centerfire rifles... I carry the same Rem M700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm08 that I use for most of my whitetail hunting..It has a Burris 2x7x33 on it. All my milsurps are as issue, so they tend to be on the heavy side. I'll bet that chopped down Jap would kick, especially if it still has the steel buttplate.1 point

considered baiting and we can't bait or feed deer in NY. That said, it is a highly effective method of control and I don't understand why the DEC is so dead set against it. There was some suggestion that it can contribute to CWD but there are plenty of states whose biologists allow it and there is no more or less a problem in those states due to baiting/use of minerals. Let's be truthful, they are a fairly communal animal how they travel and bed, CWD would happen regardless if a hunter baited or not.1 point

A light trigger can cause some serious misses depending on how you shoot. The common offhand technique is to squeeze more there better the sight picture looks. You can't do that with a real light trigger. I clean up my own trigger and help others out with their rifles as well as tune flintlock locks for old muzzleloaders. Tuning up a trigger is easy to do. Many times, the trigger just needs a good cleaning, maybe take a slight burr off with some fine emery cloth or a few light passes with a stone, then put it back with some proper lubrication. Many times, that's all that is needed. Some processes in making these guns include bead blasting. I have seen several guns with some sort of sand like material in them. Many time the factory just didn't spend enough time getting all the burrs off of it. A emery board for people's nails with a touch of light motor oil is enough to clean up a burr. It's not always the sear face, sometimes it's the side of the sear where it pivots around a pin that causes problems. There is no reason you can't shoot really good groups with a clean 4lb trigger. As said before, it might be easier to shoot good groups with this trigger than some target one. Having some travel, before it breaks, and having it break cleanly with the same effort every time makes a good trigger. A few of my own rifles I have added more trigger pull to them. sometimes making the sear engagement a little more steep of an angle, or maybe just changing the tension of a trigger return spring.1 point

I'll take a cool looking rack over an older deer. I don't see why not, YOU still can decide what to shoot or what not to shoot this year. I'll take this guy in a heart beat over an older deer with a bigger rack.1 point

I don't think too many QDM properties would have public hunting. After the expenses and work of plots and propery management, most are kept private. But perhaps you could find a lease property to your liking. Quality land access is the most challenging aspect of hunting these days.1 point

I've hunted small game for most of my life using an air rifle. Earlier this year I decided this would be my first year hunting larger game, probably just deer and maybe coyotes. I went out and purchased a Browning BLR in 270 WSM. It is one of the most beautiful rifles I have ever seen. I haven't fired it yet and I am so looking forward to it. I ordered a Skinner peep sight and my plan, at least for this first season, is to hunt with the open sights. Unless of course when I sight it in I can't get a tight enough group at 100 yards. It probably won't matter since I plan to attach a bipod to it. Needless to say I am anxiously waiting for hunting season to open.1 point

Having had a small stroke (no lasting effects), I try to compromise between pure walking, and riding. I live at the base of what I have nick-named "Cardiac hill". We did lose a neighbor to a heart attack on that hill, so it is aptly named. So unless I am still-hunting my way up the hill, I take the ATV. I drive to just under the ridge of the hill and park and then start walking quite a ways back in. In the pre-dawn hours, that keeps me from getting all sweated up, and the machine is silent for at least a half hour while I quietly go up over the lip of the hill and back to my stand up on the level hilltop. The last couple of years, I have used the ATV for taking the deer off the hill when possible. During gun season, we usually have a bit of snow on the ground, and that makes the hill a bit treacherous for ATVs. It can and has turned into a bobsled. So when there is too much snow, I just take a very slow, post daybreak still-hunt up the killer hill and across the top. I don't have any problem with the use of ATVs, even for the youngsters as long as it doesn't interfere with someone else's hunt.1 point

Sure getting complicated out there when it comes to deer hunting....maps of lightly shaded areas...dark shaded areas...diagonal lines going every which way...Shaded diagonal lines....yellow, green purple...southern zone...northern zones. It would help when DEC demands that all hunters report in on their season of hunting, be it successful or tag soup, and get a handle on things. If no report from the hunter, no tag(s) for the following season. I can more readily accept re-drawn boundaries for hunting this or that and at what time frame, when accurate info is provided. Goes for turkey too. I'm waiting for open season on drones....1 point

Big fan of my lever guns, especially my 444S. Been shooting a handloaded Hornady 265gr. FP exclusively for more than thirty years. The only knock I have with the Marlin is it's pencil-thin buttstock and drop. Felt recoil would be less if they fitted it with a decent buttstock. I don't notice the recoil afield with heavy loads but when practicing in the summer I do. I worked up some 240 gr. lead loads @ around 1,100 FPS that shoot to POA @ 25 yds. My BLR in .257 Roberts has taken a shine to 117 gr. -120 gr. bulletweights. I have yet to work up a lightweight bullet weight for varmints. I'll get around to it hopefully this summer. This gun and cartridge is a delight to shoot. A pre-war Savage 99R in .300 Savage. This only takes trips to the range but it's suprisingly accurate. Classic design and lines. It's a shame these are not popular now. And their prices only escalate.1 point
