  1. Was just shooting 2 targets for practice, but decided to put them all out. Makes shooting different yardages so much easier!

  3. Was in the local GM yesterday, and I noticed 2 guys were laughing about a box of Remington 20g sluggers that one of them had taken off the shelf. One of the 5 slugs was loaded into the hull sideways!!!! Really?? What would have happened if someone fired this slug? Come on Remington.

  4. So as far as bolt weight vs arrow weight, I see the typical Easton Bloodline 22" bolt, ready to hunt with a 125gr broadhead, weighs in at 433 grains. The Easton Bloodline hunting arrow, at 29", ready to hunt with a 125gr broadhead, weighs in at 398 grains. Vertical and compound bows are not that far off from each other in speed. The Hoyt Nitrum (probably their most popular hunting bow right now) IBOs around 340 to 350 fps. The Ten Point Turbo XLT (a pretty popular model) shoots around 345 fps. What was your argument about weight, etc again wolc123?

  5. So, who am I going to give permission to hunt my property? The smart a$$ with an attitude who thinks he is entitled because he is all that and more. Or The guy who shows up at my place with a hearty hand shake and warm smile, looking for a place to hunt with his kid, who is not afraid of work? Hmmmmm.............

  7. Id rather see part of gun season as doe only if they need to kill off does. It would make more sense than bow season. Ill continue to hunt the way I hunt, starting October 16th.

  9. So I acquired a crossbow today, Ill be picking it up next week. Its a new in the box Barnett Raptor. Not what I really wanted but it should be a decent one to get going with. 6 1/2 lbs, 330fps with 97ft/lb ke. It ought to do the trick. It has a 4x scope on it and a few bolts. Im looking forward to picking it up and seeing how it shoots.

  13. Arrow/bolt Weight is not a primary concern of mine. What I am still looking to see is what kind of group that x-bow can hold with fixed-blade broadheads or even mechanicals at long range. I also agree that many NYr's are clueless when it comes to what an x-bow can do, in hunting situations at longer range. Heck my 59 yard heart shot on a Whitetail buck last fall was a "chip-shot" compared to some of them shots we see on antelope and such out West. I do give full credit for that shot placement to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as it was 19 yards beyond where I had practiced (I guessed the range at 50). Had the arrow struck high-lung where I aimed, it would likely have been a single-lung hit and at best a very difficult tracking job rather than the quick, just out of sight recovery which occurred. The biggest mistake I see other hunters making these days is not giving credit where credit is due when it comes to their hunting success or lack thereof. Far too many blame bad equipment, not enough practice, other hunters, posted property, etc. The bottom line is the man upstairs determines where all deer end up and if you don't keep things right with him you got nothing. If and when NY allows full inclusion in archery season I will likely upgrade from the $250, 300 fps x-bow I used last season. Based on my shot last season, which only penetrated 8" into the buck (fortunately all the way thru the heart), I will limit future shots with that x-bow to 50 yards max. Showing me what kind of accuracy and penetration can be achieved at longer ranges would go a long way towards helping me decide what x-bow to purchase. I would pull the trigger on something that would cost less than $400, print a 4" group at 70 yards with broadheads, and provide pass-thru penetration.

  15. Finally found one at a good price. I have wanted one in 22 mag. for a long time but they have been hard to find and way too much $$$. Anyone else have one?? It shoots awesome

  16. It would fire, probably without any danger, but it wouldn't hit that B&C 10 pointer it was aimed at. Remington takes no responsibility for it's ammo's failure to hit the trophy buck.

  19. As far as protection from cold, I know that people hunt polar bears and muskox in temperatures a lot colder than anything that will ever occur in someone's basement or garage. And they even shoot them in those extreme temperatures. Extreme heat is a different story. I have a dozen bows stored downstairs with each one hanging on a rack in an unheated area. Many of them are periodically pulled down and shot with no sign of performance or structural problems.

  21. and that alone is all it takes for many to say it's not worth the hassle......even if someone files a lawsuit that is unwinnable, the property owner still has to answer it and spend money to do so.

  22. keep it dry, don't leave it in your car at all unless you're driving somewhere, don't set it next to a heat source or on a heater, don't take it from inside to outside or the opposite if there's a difference in temp enough to cause condensation.... finally get a hard case for it. even if it's a cheaper one. then open it up every so often to make sure everything is alright or to actually practice shooting it.

  23. Not really true. In NYS, it doesn't matter if you give permission to someone or they are trespassing, if its posted or not, the landowner is protected from liability unless there is a clear safety hazard that they knew of and neglected to warn someone of, such as a well in the middle of a field that they knew of. In any other case, the landowner is protected. Now, as soon as one dollar changes hands, the landowners becomes liable for a LOT more. That is why EVERY lease you will find through a company requires liability insurance. You may be able to come to an agreement with a farmer without the insurance, but that is just because he doesn't realize that he is suddenly liable if you sprain your ankle on his land.

  24. Great article on the antlerless archery season, but I was terribly disappointed that the overwhelming question was not noted (unless I missed it). That question being that : If the DEC is truly concerned about what they call, "a critical need to boost the antlerless harvest in those units", why did they choose the most ineffective and inefficient season to do it in? How can you do an article on this subject without mentioning that glaring question?
    1 point
  25. Yup really changes nothing. Bow season goes back to where it used to be in those areas and any early season romps will not be in the areas they want hunters to be. This is going to do 2 things...1, Make hunters hunt in areas the DEC does not need them in and 2, hunters will still harvest whatever they want, whenever they want and will do it against the DEC.

  26. This is done in a lot of places, the problem is the "Wilderness" designated areas. The regulations put in place for these places do not allow for this type of thing to be done, but they can make every effort to stop natural wildfires. There lies the problem.

  27. Nyslowhand, I've shot several deer closer than 10 yds from tree stand. Good shots that catch 2 lungs or lung heart. I usually hang my stands between 13 and 16 feet off the ground. Depending on what the tree allows me to do. I think your comment indicating that a hunter doesn't have an advisable shot closer than 10 yards may be true if the hunter is way up high in the tree, like 20 plus. But is a little misleading without that caveat. Obviously the higher you go, the worse the close range shots become.

  32. Stones, I know you know a fixed blade is going to fly differently from a mech head and vice versa most of the time no matter what you shoot it from. Same as comparing ANY broadhead configuration to a field point. I don't know what all the hoopla about seeing a fixed blade head hit the mark at 100yds is all about, but some guys like to try some crazy stuff. When I hear that as one of the questions that a newbie wants to know before they get into x-bow.... well, it makes me nervous what they're thinking. Once you dial in the scope, as long as you're not mixing and matching between the two, it's really not all that hard to drop them all in the same dot as long as you do your part on the trigger end consistently. I'm pretty darn good out to 50yds and that's all I really care about.

  33. Basically the DEC stated they were going to stick to their original 2012-2016 Whitetail Mgmt Plan. Regardless of all the controversy caused by their early bow & ML doe only proposed legislations. Also referenced the Cornell survey, you know where only ~2500 individuals responded to it!??! As growalot mentioned, they literally dismissed the earn-a-buck concept. Next step would be to have a portion of the regular season, doe only. That is if bow & ML hunters did NOT reduce the population sufficiently. The DEC is acting like the spoiled kid that owns the bat & ball. It'll be my way or no way! FUBAR! Politics at its' worst & at our expense! So, to play that game, get all the DMPs you can, fill them out as harvests & report them, regardless if you actually kill any. Not like the DEC actually knows how many deer are really out there anyways.

  34. worn my targets out.... only have a bag and a block target now. Rhino block will last forever so will probably get a 3D target next to add to it. probably a competition one built to last. had that Shooter Buck as my last one and it didn't last long at all.... even with field points. I do have a luxury of a club range next door where I can shoot out targets in increments of 10 yards out to 60. Bugs aren't scarce but it's covered.

  35. Hell ya.... I watched one run across an open field ...fireman had been trying to contain it...scared the ba-geegees out of me...I was afraid it would jump the road and come up the hay field in our direction. that thing moved so fast ,fireman were running and trucks were dang near over run... Perhaps this is the answer for Albany and Washington DC...good old clear burn

  39. Anymore I look forward to hunting before all the "no rhyme no reason" crap starts. It's never that great in NY anyway. And the places I have hunted where it is great, the action may he hot and heavy but everything is scatterrbrains. You have to be out all day and everything you see is going 100 miles an hour. I think you have a better chance when pre-rut is just starting when you know the sign you find is from a deer close by, movement is still early/late, and hunting pressure has been light.

  42. The best secret to killing big bucks on public land is to "get in the woods" far from where others are hunting... big bucks tend to hang in the same kind of real estate no matter where they live... hunting those kind of big buck haunts is the secret... most hunters don't venture into those areas because they are nasty places to hunt. Over the years I have found that guys who have never killed a big buck rarely hunt real big buck areas... I have many friends that kill big bucks on a regular basis and knowing those areas is the common denominator. I can tell you that the areas are more than 100 yards off the road.

  45. They weigh a ton. Just be aware of that if buying online. For the benefit, I prefer the reduced weight and just sight mine in. with a little practice, you will be darn close by just eyeing up a 40 and 50 yd pin after sighting in at 20 and 30. The gaps tend to just get slightly larger the longer the distance out. Obviously, reconfirm after adjustment.

  46. Well, this thread was aimed to help new hunters not be so worried about hunting state land. To give them a basic guide to get a good deer. These methods would be good for a big rack or a big doe. But, as usual, members have ruined it. As for being able to leave a cam on state land? I would like to see a link for that. Then again, it doesn't matter. You post something that might help new hunters, you get blasted. It might be in a raw basic sense, but this thread might have helped someone. Instead you have a need to beat me down, and shit in me. Hope it made you feel good. OH, this is no pity party! It just shows who you are.

  47. I would have left the bear to his business.. yet would have notified authorities at least to let them know of the incident as it was happening... I would want something done about a hungry bear being that close to my home and family. I'm sure that is an incident that the local law enforcement or EnCon Dept would like to know about... and I would press them to do something for the protection of the neighborhood. In the woods I would just let nature take its course... unless it was hunting season... in which case, I would be eating venison and bear meat afterwards of course!

  48. Is it just me or does the deer look bigger than the bear? Looks like a small bear and he must have found her hurt or been real lucky. As to what to do, if not residential shoot the deer and let the bear eat it. I would want to end the deer's suffering. But as others have said just mother nature at work. I aspire to be a lot cleaner killer.
