So I acquired a crossbow today, Ill be picking it up next week. Its a new in the box Barnett Raptor. Not what I really wanted but it should be a decent one to get going with. 6 1/2 lbs, 330fps with 97ft/lb ke. It ought to do the trick. It has a 4x scope on it and a few bolts. Im looking forward to picking it up and seeing how it shoots.3 points

First buck I ever killed with my muzzleloader was at 190 yards. It was a high shoulder shot and took the buck right off its feet. It wasnt a "jesus shot" either. I practice at 200 yards with it every time I have it at the range, and knew exactly where it would hit. The slug passed completely through the deer, taking out both shoulders in the process.3 points

What kind of ML are you shooting? 100 yards is a walk in the park for ML of today's technology. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems3 points

40 minutes to an hour isn't bad to go hunt public land. Most of where I hunt is 30-40 minutes to the public parcels that allow hunting. Sometimes I may spend another 40 minutes finding an open parking spot, then hike in from there. There are people who drive 1.5 hours to hunt the same public land I do. It would be nice to just walk out the back door or have a 10 minute drive to hunt some place, but it is not the norm for most people these days. You never know when deer may appear. Two years ago I parked in a spot, put on my gear. and took my gun out of the case. Walked maybe 15 yards from the car and a deer jumped up and ran over the hill. I hadn't even loaded my gun yet. Remember - any day out hunting is better than a day at the office. Getting out there for fresh air, and a little exercise is good for you.2 points

Welcome and glad you stopped by! With only a little over a month until the bow opener, time is getting short to be ready, if you have never shot a bow before. The best advice I can give you now, is to decide what weapon you are going to use, THIS year. Then to shoot it as much as you can until you become comfortable and proficient with it. Then you can begin your hunting adventures, wherever you hunt. Good luck this season!2 points

got a whole family of crabbies out East LI area. The best of the lot I've seen on my cameras is a big 12. He had the body of a 5 year old on him. A true tank. No day time pics of him ever. Truth be told I haven't seen him on camera in two seasons so he maybe gone. But he's definitely a P&Y deer so I doubt he was taken legally if he's gone. He sure made a lot of does happy because there is a bunch of 2 and 3 year olds with crab claw racks out that way.2 points

Was just shooting 2 targets for practice, but decided to put them all out. Makes shooting different yardages so much easier!1 point

What all of this research fails to consider is that another difference between man as a predator vs. all the other predators is our ability to recognize endangered species and take remedial actions. They also fail to recognize that we as a species have developed laws, bag limits, and legal handicaps. We have also developed the ability to introduce species when that plan appears to be environmentally responsible. I saw none of this mentioned in the article.1 point

One area of the spot I planted came up good, then the crack grass came through, taking control of that entire area. Came in better than most peoples lawns, LOL. Timothy and clover was thinly growing in it on first work over. That quack seed will stay in the ground for years and regrow on turn over. Reworked it and now going into wheat next week. My other plots are starting to absorb the nitrogen. Plenty of moisture in the ground here too. Love it when a plan comes together. Looks like a good fall ahead for watching the bucks breed the doe, Starting to get itchey with this cool weather ahead, LOL.1 point

Wouldn't you think they would all be printed, enveloped and ready to be mailed out as the first licenses issued? I mean, what benefit is there to waiting until the last minute?1 point

Hopefully your doe will draw in a roaming adult buck! Otherwise I would keep them!1 point

I have my dads '98 Mauser, in its original 8x57 mm. He put a redfield aperture and Herters bird eye maple stock on it, and I took my first buck with it. Over the past few years, I performed some long needed updating...competition firing pin and spring, Timney trigger, drilled and tapped it for Leupold single piece mount. It now wears a 1.5x 5 Leupold. I hated to move away from the beautiful piece of maple dad used, but by going to a Hogue synthetic (glass bedded of course)I saved about 2 lbs, Lastly I replaced the stock trigger guard assembly with a commercial trap door version...saved almost a 1/4 lb there. With my long used Sierra 175 loads, she is the best shooting gun I have now. It has work duty on my upcoming Newfoundland moose hunt.1 point

We have a physics professor amongst us? What's the coefficient of friction on a bolt going 300fps with a 5mph wind? So if a slower bolt/arrow is more advantageous in the wind, maybe the bow manufacturers got it all wrong. Maybe we should be shooting 3fps instead of 300? What do you think professor? Thanks for the info guys. I figure if I dont like the scope, Ill get a new one for it. The price I got this for was unbeatable. I know it isnt high end, Ill just keep my shots within my personal comfort zone, probably 40 or so. Nope Larry, I wasnt gonna get one this year either, it fell in my lap.1 point

Then we wonder why there was such a resistance from "conventional bow hunters" when x-bows were introduced. You guys even worrying about what penetration and KE is @100yds is a point that has brought out more opposition to the x-bow than anything else. These guys are shooting stationary targets in all these vids.... not taking pokes at living breathing game.1 point

Lol- one of you doesn't even practice at a range he plans to kill something at, and the other doesn't even own a crossbow. I'm sure those requests are being worked on as we speak. I got a video you guys can watch together in the mean time. It's a classic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLB-uMPj27s1 point

I believe each parcel of state land has its own set of rules the State land we hunt in 8N we were told by DEC nothing gets left behind that included trail cameras. Though I don't think it gets checked often same nice tree stands left year to year.1 point

Pop up blind for me from now on , just too old to climb a tree , I just gave 2 good climbers away. My new one is a plenty big 8' + x8' + x 7' tall No problem drawing a bow or aiming a rifle , Had deer walk up to it 15' away last year eating for quite some time. Never Spooked.1 point

It all depends on the area you hunt. The places I hunt, there are natural elevations and natural cover that I can hide in. I prefer the ground more because I like to move. I'll sit still all morning. Mid-afternoon, I'll stalk. Late afternoon I'll sit again at a different spot. The areas that I hunt are more pressured so the deer tends to shift patterns every once in a while so I adjust. I have a spot, a backup spot, a backup to my backup spot and a backup to my backup to my backup spot, etc. A climber (I hunt public lands) is just too much of a hassle to go up and down the tree repeatedly. I use the climber only if I am hunting a spot where there is no natural cover or I can't get a clear shooting lane. You have to know the layout of the land, the behavior of the deer and adjust accordingly.1 point

Ground blind also keeps your shooting the exact same way you have been practicing. Shooting from a stand you have to "brake" at the waist and bend the front knee to keep good form. Shooting from a stand is slightly different than from the ground but no different than shooting from a hill...1 point

I have no doubt in my mind that Field Archer could drop 3 fixed bladed bolts onto the kill zone at that yardage consistently. Why or how you ask?..... because he's familiar with his rig. I don't think I'd be able to pull it off myself with any regularity simply because I don't even practice at that range. There's still a good amount of skill involved with shooting a crossbow accurately no matter what anyone tells you when you reach out that far. I believe he has shown time and time again through his video compilation he's more than capable of quick, clean, effective kills when he trips the trigger. That has little to no luck involved because he doesn't push his limits and uses his head. One of these days maybe that will sink in for you.1 point

I don't have any REALLY light centerfire rifles... I carry the same Rem M700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm08 that I use for most of my whitetail hunting..It has a Burris 2x7x33 on it. All my milsurps are as issue, so they tend to be on the heavy side. I'll bet that chopped down Jap would kick, especially if it still has the steel buttplate.1 point

If you ride them every day in your woods at a similar time of day perhaps the game will get use to them, same as a farmer on routine to milk his cows every morning and evening is ignored by them. I have a small tractor we use to retrieve deer ,but we do it at lunch and almost dark most of the time.1 point

As a teenager, I'm walking down the ice on a frozen creek with my M 69 Winchester .22.. the ice is lick and both feet go out from under me..The rifle goes into the air, does a couple of cartwheels and lands on the ice with a sickening CRACK !.. Broke off the front sight and cracked the stock...Got both repaired by a local gunsmith, but the rifle always bore the scars.. This is a REALLY dumb one....I am standing a quarterdeck mid watch on a Navy Destroyer.. The lazy ass CPO who is in charge of the watch is down in the chief's quarters watching TV and drinking coffee, leaving me alone... I'm bored stiff..I'm wearing a holstered, unloaded 1911 .45 with two loaded clips in a belt carrier... I wonder...." How long would it take me to get this pistol into action if I ever needed it ?" SO , standing alone on the quarterdeck in the middle of the night, I do a little "quickdraw" exercise.... I draw the pistol, pull a mag, load it in the pistol and rack the slide....Pretty dang quick, too, if I remember correctly.. Ok....Here I stand, locked and loaded, safety off....Time to unload the pistol.... I hold back the hammer and press the trigger to drop the hammer, something I had done many times with many different guns.. But this time the hammer SLIPS off my thumb... I swear to God it made the loudest CLICK I have ever heard in my life... Sweat pouring off my brow, I dropped the mag and ejected the round..The primer was dented, but not QUITE enough to ignite the primer... If that thing had gone off they would probably STILL have me in the brig, and that was in 1972..1 point
