This weekend is the second time they're offering the sportsman tax free weekend in Mississippi. They started it last year and people love it. This state I live in is far from perfect, but they do at least listen to their citizens. So all labor day weekend long anything to do with hunting, fishing and all guns and ammo is tax free. win.4 points

I know there has been some discussion lately about how far to go in the woods on state land. This camera location is almost exactly 1/2 mile into the woods, in between two roads. I seen 23 deer from this stand last year opening day of regular season, most deer pushed to me from other hunters. It was the most I have ever seen on state land in one day. The location is on a creek bottom, open pines on one side and hard woods on other side of the creek. I have never bow hunted this area, but looking forward to it this year.3 points

I agree with nixing the food plot idea. Its only 7.5 acres with fields to west and south (assuming N is top of photo). Creek may provide a funnel but without boots on the ground, its tough to tell as its close to the road - should be some crossing areas that are worth a look. Assuming predominate SW wind, I would consider stand in woods near inside corner of field (NW corner of red area) (also depends on crop) and stands N and E of thick areas in the interior where indicated by clear deer trails. I assume one or two sits and you will know where they travel since its a small parcel. Look for bedding areas when you scout too. Good luck and make good shots so you don't have to track off the property.3 points

I wouldn't even do a food plot, looks like a travel corridor spot. Would use it for bow hunting once and a while if I had permission too it. Not too much property, hang a stand and tread lightly til the opener.3 points

would you rather we be talking about isis or hillary clinton? if you're not interested don't click the thread.3 points

No offense, but that statement simply isn't true. The new Aggressor and the Reconyx line will beat out Cudde on that component. Plus trigger speed comparisons are a marketing gimmick. If you fall for that bullet point alone, you (not you, but in general) really need to learn how cameras work. Cudde is simply middle of the pack overall imo. Browning's BTC5HD and BTC7FHD are about the best bang for the buck under $150 for red IR at the moment on 2015 models. Black IR...there are cams that are good at vids, and cams that are good at pics, but not much under $150 that do both extremely well.3 points

I would have to agree with a quick scout and stand set up. Its small so go scent free as possible and get it done ASAP. Good luck with it, looks like a nice spot. I would not bother with a food plot it looks like a great travel area. Middle would be my choice if I had to.2 points

Core, My LL Bean Gortex lined, insulated Maine Hunting boots were around $150-170 that I wore out after 20 years (weekend hunting, snow shoveling, and camping 2-3 times a year). Nothing beats a good pair of boots that you take care of. I have been winter camping with people that had the wrong footwear - they were stuck by the campfire until it was time to head home in order to keep their feet from freezing. Insulated boots are a must when it gets cold. I have been deer hunting in the southern zone in below 30 degree temps. That is why I carry a backing stove and small pot (hot soup and a hot drink). If you can't swing a really good pair now, buy an insulated pair that will at least get you though this season. If they are not water proof, buy a pair of rubber over-shoes that fit over them. Tractor supply carries them.2 points

You may be satisfied by taking it like the DEC dealt this out, but many are taking exception to it. Your desire to just toss up your hands and do nothing is just what the government counts on.2 points

yep screw the food plot and do scouting and stand setup quick as possible. in and out. seems like good habitat for browse. looks pretty flat. first figure out access walk the road or creek to get N and S. look for any bedding that could get you busted on the way in and determine where you need to come in from. next go in deeper and look for an intersection of multiple trails. also look for maybe a trending row of mast producing trees like apple, oak, etc. if you have to, work backwards from the field edge. if you've got fishing waders spray them down and wear them. looks like an early season evening stand. if you've got a new moon you might check a buck late to bedding in the mornings but evening would probably be your best bet. who knows. also like moog said good shots unless you know you'll have permission to track on adjacent properties. stick to the bottom 1/3 and aim for the heart. center mass lungs might let it go a ways.2 points

My Bear Agenda 6 bow can handle any Chup's out there lol. Core, I hunt about 45 miles South of Letchworth , if this is within your travel means feel free to send me a p.m. and I can tell you coordinates of the woods I hunt. 29 Days away until opening day, cant wait ! I have about 50 pictures of the 7 pointer during the month of August, first time I ever found a hangout spot for a specific buck. Normally I am lucky to get a 2nd picture of a buck in this area.2 points

OK. In true DEC fashion, the current sample size is fine. Close the poll, draw your conclusions and make your decisions...lol2 points

Another thing I did not need to know about! Ignorance is bliss sometimes guys!! Going squirrel hunting now is going to freak me out with alien worms popping out of the carcasses! ick2 points

See attached pic. Red Area is 7.5 acres border farm lands. Blue line is a narrow creek (you can jump across it). Main road is a dirt/gravel road. I haven't walked the land, but will be this weekend. My dad walked the land although pretty heavy right now, but found several heavy used deer trails. Separately, if you were to put in a food plot, where would you do it? up against the farmlands or in the middle of the property? Thanks in advance.1 point

http://acm-spypoint-hd7.pgtb.me/vXjpZg/jjT1m?w=38339564&e=100485256 Another G/F of mine needs some help if you guys wouldn't mind! (ok, not really my G/F.... but she's a great outdoorsy gal I've met and respect as an accomplished hunter and friend) The picture you'd be voting for is on the first page pic #1 I believe titled " I present to you his majesty" by Ruth I. It's a great shot of a red stag over seas. Some here will know who she is. Appreciate any votes you guys find time to give! Right now, she's about 200 votes behind the leader, but we're gaining ground!1 point

All makes sense. The Farmer who owns 1,000 of acres (not a typo) would allow us to recover on his property, but not hunt it. He currently leases it out to a gun club. I agree with your suggestions based on the pictures and what my Dad has relayed to me regarding sitting in the NW corner. We have never used treestands before, but would be allowed to do so here. So by using one, we would be able to see a lot of ground since its mostly flat/rolling hills. My Dad also spoke with the landowner across the street who doesn't hunt, but in the event a deer cross the gravel road, we would be allowed to recover there also. He said it is impossible to drive this gravel road at night and not see a deer. He also seen bear (no season in CT), coyotes, fox, bobcat, etc. Lastly, this area of CT does not allow baiting but does provide for 6 tags per person. 2 either sex and 2 antlerless during bow (9/15 - 12/31) and 1 either sex and 1 antlerless during gun season (mid/late Nov into Dec. - don't know exact dates off the top of my head). Since we don't care about does, it would essentially mean 3 buck tags each.1 point

Core They will not cut it come cold nov. or late season. Stretch for a decent pair of boots. I have muck woody elites that I have used for 3 seasons and are still serviceable. That's less that $50/season. Work in the swamp and snow. Money well spent IMO.1 point

In a recent post made by a member here that goes by "Papist" made a comment about another member. Here's the post http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28885-Three-Muslim-Immigrants-Spend-Hours-Beating-a-Christian-Man-to-Death-in-Portland%2C-Maine/page__view__findpost__p__399009 "Papist" refers to this other member as a "communist" and "anti-American". It's no secret the member Papist is referring to in his post is referring to Elmo, which happens to be Asian American. Papist' comment of accusing Elmo as a communist is purely racial, because of Elmo's origins. There should be NO room for this type of behavior and is uncalled for. I call for the banning of Papist or else.... Or else I'll have to start shooting deer in the head. [emoji1] But seriously, Papist needs a time-out. Shawnhu thinks that only Asians can be commies. This makes Shawnhu a moron. Time for a poll. Interestingly commies always seek to ban dissent and political opposition. Is this a double bluff?1 point

I just started using it but the Cuddeback Long Range IR cam I've got has a trigger speed that's plenty fast enough it seems. also it's got an adjustable window for the motion sensor; wide or narrow beam angle. I don't think night time IR pictures are that great but day time ones seem to be really good. it's set to 20MP though. TrophyCams I've got from Bushnell seem to take good pictures during the day good pictures at night. trigger speed isn't quite as fast though. you just learn to work with a camera and how to use it, as long as it'll work dependably. I've heard a lot of good things about Browning cams. Haven't bought any in a while so many of the new ones I don't know much about.1 point

So the wife and I went down to the Florida Keys last week for our first anniversary. Not sure if you were aware, but there is a sub species of weight tailed deer that live down there called "Key Deer". I thought I would share some pictures of a nice buck that we saw while we were down there. And yes, that is a normal sized sign next to it. They are the smallest sub species of deer. I have some better pics on the actual camera, but the phone ones were easier to upload. You can't hunt them, but I'm thinking about going down and trying to find some sheds from this boy. Would make nice compact rattling antlers. ????1 point

Ditto on the boots. I learned last year that boots and gloves were VERY important.1 point

I'm pretty sure this applies only to publicly maintained roads, not ones you or a farmer maintain.1 point

I would take my chances with even higher taxes because I believe it would be short term. There actually would end up being jobs creation and upstate would be attractive to manufacturing again. larger tax base and it would result in lower taxes in long term. Not to mention a different approach to mandated programs.1 point

I'm getting closer...So last steps in tower are the rest of braces...no big deal but the plywood and decking...Can't goof the dimensions on plywood so I decided to pre-assemble the blind on the plywood...used our trailer.I taped it together ...this will also allow me to drill my pilot holes for final assembly also measure up for the drop in roof.... much easier when all the siding isn't on... took some pics.....So close to being done few more pieces to screw into place on walls and then putting on the siding door...painting and getting it into place...if it would just stop threatening to rain...anyways I'll worry about finishing touches...(removable tinted vinyl windows, curtains shelves and such later...1 point

Creek Chub or also called Golden Shiner. Around here Creek Chub is common name. They can get pretty big too. Here on the SR we have caught some up to 16 inches. Fight like crazy but are not worthy of a frying pan.1 point

I got no sympathy for public land hunters. All the small parcel PRIVATE land I have permission to hunt gets POUNDED by family and friends of the landowner as well as trespassers. I don't mind seeing clueless hunters out there moving deer around since I've done my homework.1 point
