Thank you everybody! I just prop some sticks behind their ears or antlers out of the cameras sight. I probably put more time into staging field photos than most guys have time for but it started raining before my shoot was over. I only put an hour into these, but my mind was wandering. I dedicate this buck to my good friend "Shedster" who passed away at the end of last month, 800+++ lifetime shed antler finds for this man who's life was cut way too short. Here's some horns off to heaven for you to scoop up my friend!

Now that there are no restrictions I finally went out yesterday afternoon. I love waking up before my alarm goes off this am. That never happens for work!!

The simple answer is Layering. You need to wear several layers of quality insulated clothing that will trap air. Start out with some insulated cold weather thermals. Over those go some insulated hunting pants and a heavy wool shirt. Next would be an insulated vest to keep your torso warm. Finally an insulated hunting parka with some form of a wind blocker material. Get your self a warm insulated hunting hat and wear a facemask under it on very cold days, along with a quality pair of hunting gloves or mittens and some chemical handwarmers or a hand muff. Do not skimp on cheap boots either- they must be insulated and should be large enough to give you the ability to wear 2 pairs of thermal socks inside of them. With all of your clothing, make sure it is a little loose fitting as tight fitting clothing or boots will constrict your blood flow to those areas and result in you getting cold. Don't be afraid to wear too much clothing. As my late father always told me "you can always take it off if you brought it with you, but you can't put it on when you leave it at home."

I saw a doe and a spike. Decided to pack up. I grabbed by bow off the rope and took a few steps and stopped to put my glasses back on. I hear a huge snap just down the hill. I'm looking hard thru the brush and hear more ruckus. It a big body 8pt going to town on a tree. I get on my knees and he finally starts heading straight towards me. He stops at around 20-25yrs and looks at me for a minute then turns and starts walking to my right, get full draw and as he hits a opening I grunt and he stops giving me only a liver/gut shot. H continues to the next opening and this time when I grunt he takes two steps to many and I have no shot. By now my arms are getting tired and shaky and I had to let off and he saw me. All at like 15-20 yards. Damn!!

There are always a few of you I can count on to make me laugh when I'm down in the dumps! I'll get them pics up tomorrow some time. Wish you all were there to see my season so far! Best fun I had since my first wife found out about my 2'nd wife and my other G/F! It's been so active here, I'm having a hard time jumping in on your arguments lately after missing out on a few weeks. I promise I'll catch up tomorrow, but it's good to hear from you guys again!

Coffee and yogurt wasn't the best decision I made this morning. Had to make a u-turn and destroy the bathroom. The kind where you come out sweating and it hurts to wipe. Where each time you think you're done but there more. The kind where you have to drink water afterwards because you're dehydrated. Yes, that kind. Hey guys, things have been a little crappy for me lately so I haven't been around much. Taking a bit of a break this weekend and I'll try to get some pics loaded from my bow season so far. I did score on a nice buck the other night so I'll try to load those up sometime tonight when I get situated. Thanks for all your concern. I got some catching up to do here!

Been back on stand for about an hour now set up a new stand today on a travel corridor we know the big 9 is using, steep ridge 80 yards to my left thick swamp 80 yards to my right field 100 yards in grin of me and 3 huge rubs 20 yards ahead on the trail

So bad pictures I know but I got my first doe with a bow right before sundown last night and it was too dark by the time I got packed up found the blood trail and found her. The story goes... Wednesday night I had a shot at this doe and missed TWICE due to some poor mechanics on my part. I actually got some advice from some experienced bow hunters on this site and determined I wasn't bending at the waist and was lowering my arm instead resulting in higher shots. I gave it another go last night and just before sundown like clockwork she came out of the high grass into the hardwoods with the two other smaller does she's been with every time I saw her. The only difference is this time is she didn't give me as easy a shot opportunity at 20-25 yards. She was approx 35-40 yards away this time which is still in my comfort zone so I focused on the mechanics and waiting for the right opening and took the shot. She went down on all fours instantly and the got up and ran up the hill(15 yards) back into the high grass. I waited about 20-30 mins and packed up and set out on the trail. She only made it into the grass about 5 yards in....BONUS!

Bring a first year hunter out hoping to see him take his first deer. Set him up in our best stand for deer sightings. I sit a new stand about 70yds away downwind of him to ensure I don't mess it up for him. Don't I have all heck break loose with 2 bucks squaring off and chasing a doe with 2 fawn all around my stand for 1/2 an hour. Phade sits 150yds away sees six doe and the new hunter doesn't see a thing. Ugghhh. Frustrating but I guess that is hunting. The one buck was a decent 2.5yr old. It would have been a great first buck for the new hunter. Maybe tomorrow morning. 2 sits now for the new guy and he is the only one not seeing deer. Not doing well trying to guess the best stand for him so far. Perhaps it's throw a dart time.

well, in 30+ years of deer hunting I've yet to do that......willing to take the chance for warmer feet and longer sits. I've wasted more money on worse things.

There are much bigger here. They will have to wait till punkin' season starts, but they are very crafty by then. This was almost too easy by patterning bachelor groups between the fields. Saving the does for my sis so she can get her first kill or maybe a nice buck. Plenty of others still alive that I've seen including a piebald white romper and a nice basket rack dandy double throat patch 7pt I got pics of. I'm OUT till regular gun season opens and I doubt I'll pull the trigger this year again unless it's a real cranker!

Yeah, all it takes is to outlaw deer hunting for a bunch of consecutive years ..... lol. There's a neat way to make NYS a trophy destination. That's all that is keeping that from happening. Damn people just keep insisting on hunting.

Oh so glad I decided to check out the new blind!. Well until I finally had to step out in the mini hurrican we were having... Saw a fawn early and then right as things started going side ways out steps 2 fawn and 4 big doe...they read the script and started around the end of the fence just past the blind and 17 yards out...I grabbed my bow and stood for the shot when.....a gust of wind blew them up the laneway in the opposite direction...I kid you not! You could see their tails fly up and their fur ripple forward. Then the sky opened up... I know I heard old Ma nature laugh as she nudge God and pointed down towards me...Ha! even I had to shake my head and laugh...who cares! the blind is GREAT!most windows up and the storm flaps brought down it was just as snug as can be...had my LED lantern on no problem....

This is why the #1 rule of deer hunting is, has always been and always will be. Keep the wind in your face as much as possible! Quite simple really, they can't smell you, even with those "super noses" if you keep yourself up wind of them! But they can smell where you walk. Wind swirls and you have thermals to contend with. And they don't always follow the plan and come from where you think they will. So that's why we call it hunting. Their noses against our brains.

Thats not a new article, it pops up every year. Deer arent trying to track you down like the dog is, so its not exactly apples to apples. My theory on it is that you cant get rid of your scent completely, but you can cut down its intensity, which most likely makes it seem as though your scent is older than it really is, making the deer less freaked out by it. You still have to play the wind, but if a deer thinks you are further away because theres not as strong of a scent, then the chance of them getting and staying closer to you when they are downwind is that much better.

I have seen more in the morning and have been lucky to be out all day on a few occasions. I actually got my best deer this year at about 7:15 am...this 9 pt Sent from my KYOCERA-E6560 using Tapatalk

Okay .... so now the season in my WMU has finally started. Yesterday was great weather .... a bit breezy, but the temp and lack of rain was great. Unfortunately no deer showed up, but at least I didn't have to face the possibility of spooking bucks that I had no legal right to shoot.

Yesterday morning I hunted some winery property basically just to take a trailcam down that I had setup a couple of weeks ago. Upon, checking the cam I was pleased to find a whole bunch of bucks hitting the white oak that my stand was set in. Two deer really caught my attention...one was a beautiful 9-pt and the other was a doe that looked like a football with legs... Since, my buck tag is filled I decided to try to hunt this fat doe. Taking a wise old doe like this is definately no easy task. She liked to hit the oak up around 6:00 every few nights with a couple other does. I had a little time to kill yesterday afternoon so I went after her. I arrived to my stand late at 5:15...literally two minutes later she steps out at 150 yds down the field and started working my way. Eventually, she ended up feeding right under me and I put a Rage Hypo through her at 10 yds... I may have to have her aged...she has lots of white on her face/muzzle and her legs. I think she's been around a while. I have to give he old girl credit for surviving the nuisance permit onslaught that happens here every summer... This would have been a nice pic with a better camera... So, that's a wrap for me for this bow season. I have one more DMP left but my freezer is pretty stocked now and I have no reason to fill it. What a season!!!

I have some acorn scented cover up spray . I'll spray my pants and boots down before heading into my stand. Hmm, now that I think of it, wonder what the deer think of it as there is NO acorns in the area ?!

I don't really still hunt like others, I just take off my clothes (Yes I keep my underwear on!) put them in the back pack and run as fast as I can for about 30 yards, then stop and look. Then after my 2nd 30 yard long distance run I catch my breath and sit for about 32 minutes. Get up and do it all over again. When I am bored I start climbing trees and hang from them like an ape and scream WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE DEER!!! I grunt as loud as possible about every 2-3 seconds or until I pass out. Then when I wake up I know the woods are calm. Then I pack it in and call it a day.

I arrowed this cool looking buck yesterday afternoon. I had 4 bucks within 15 yds of the stand but managed to get drawn back and put a Rage hypodernic in this guy. He was slightly quartering towards me but I had no choice and took the first shot presented as the 8-pt at the bottom of my tree was getting a bit restless. I ended up leaving him overnight and recovered my 13-pt this morning. He's not wide but has super mass and tons of character. What an awesome two days of hunting!!!
