  2. Go my buck today after 2 hours of army crawling for 400 yards yards across a open field.. I got a call saying there was a buck standing feeding in the middle of my farm. I left It was a 15 minute drive. My step dad was like he bedding down out there in a little spot of golden rod.So scanned and could not see him. It was a north wind, so I went to the south end of the field and started to army crawl the hay field. Made it about 200 yards in a hour or so. Still have not seen him. My phone rings saying he is standing I am told. So I finally see him standing and mowing around eating, then lays down.So I crawl another 100 yards, and finally see him laying and he has 2 does with him. So I slowly crawl another 100 yards, and now I am about 100 yards or so. He is just laying looking at Route 89.I watched him for about 30 more minutes and he never got up, then a doe stands up eats some and lays back down.So I finally think I good shot at about 90 yards and shoot, hit just to the right of him, he stands up and 2 doe start running south toward me, I hit him with my next shot right through the lungs and he dropped about 80 yards after that. He was laying 150 yards of route 89 in the middle of a open field with 2 doe's. Got checked by the DEC, as he seen me crouching out in the field well I was watching this buck waiting for a shot.

  4. 7 pointer down! Just got a text from my Dad who is hunting in 3A public land for the first time in 20-30 years. He shot the 7pt at 725am with his .243 at 60 yards. pass-through both shoulders, 30 yard blood trail. He saw the deer at 715am over 100 yards away through some brush so had to wait to make sure there were enough points. Pics to come!

  9. Another successful year at Camp-Hole-in-the-Wall in West Almond, Allegany county. Shot a spiker and a doe, my buddy Matt killed an 8-pointer WAYYYY back at the top of the mountain. 2 other guys left before it got good, shame on them.

  10. Hunted my "lucky" stand this morning and I made 75 yd. shot with the muzzleloader on this buck. I have shot 3 bucks of similar quality over the past 4 years from this stand. I know that there are bigger ones shot elsewhere in the state, but this is a good one for this area. I hunt the property a lot during bow season and have had chances at some smaller bucks, but have passed on them. I missed my chance at a smaller 8 pt. last Sunday at 20 yds.

  15. Tuesday, 11/24: While I was at work, my Dad decided to head up to the catskills where he used to hunt in the 1960's - 1980's in 3A, Sullivan County at Balsam (sp?). Over 10,000 acres I believe. He left around 2am, saw a nice a 6pt while driving on route 28 and a bobcat as well. At 12:15pm my Dad texted me that he shot a 7 pointer. He shot the 7pt at 725am with his .243 at 60 yards. pass-through both shoulders on a broadside shot, 30 yard blood trail. He saw the deer at 715am over 100 yards away through some brush so had to wait to make sure there were enough points. It took him a few hours to get it back down the mountain and to the car. My dad is ecstatic to say the least. Not his biggest buck by any means, but I can tell it means a lot to him to go back in history and get a buck up in the Catskills. I know his spot is over 45minutes walk from where he parks, all uphill. I'm really happy for him knowing how much time he puts in every single year for the last 40-50 years. Pics to come!

  22. Yes we just got rifle's this year. I had him in the scope standing up at 200 yards problem was neighbors barns and a distillery where in the distant background. Problem was his location. There was only one direction that I could shoot. Any other way there are either barns or houses, or a main road in the back ground. So I just had to work my way to be able to get a shot.Plus I could not see him all the time laying in the golden rod, with the wind. blowing the golden rod around. This stalk was awesome and one of my best enjoyment hunts every, except taking my daughter getting her first turkey. It takes skill and patience to sneak up on a deer.

  25. I would, because I can hardly get my eyes on a deer once opening weekend is over. I'm jealous of you guys that can decide to "take a doe" whenever you feel like it

  26. I shot a doe opening day in the afternoon . I saw no deer in the am . I shoot them for the meat . The doe is in my freezer . If you hunt for the horns , good luck ! DMPs are issued for a reason ..... to cut down the doe population .

  27. A real friend would have known that that was your deer and your shot of redemption and shooting at it robs you of that opportunity. A real friend would have let the 10 pointer walk even if it came to their side to allow the possibility that it might turn and cross over to your side.

  32. Firing back..? Seems like you are the one who has busy running his mouth on this thread... And for your information, sonny boy, I was bowhunting for years, probably many years before you were born, and I never have owned a crossbow, AND it's been years since I participated in a deer drive. However, driving deer is an effective and legitimate method of hunting when done properly and safely. I can remember when nearly everyone drove deer. And don't talk to me about not being in the woods. I've been in woods you've probably never DREAMED of...

  34. Due to family and work obligations throughout October and half of November, the first time I had the opportunity to go hunting was on 11/21/15, opening day for firearm in southern zone. It was also the first time for my son going deer hunting. We drove up on Friday afternoon meeting my brother in laws and my inlaws at the house. My son and I went out to set up our blind on the edge of a cut corn field at the corner of our property. We got back to the cabin within 15 minutes of setting up as I did not want to spend unnecessary time in the field and did not want to spook any deer. Friday night started out with the traditional "opening day eve" dinner consisting of tripe sauteed in tomato sauce, garlic and vegetables. I never thought my 14 year old son would eat it but he ate everything and licked the bowl. Saturday morning (opening day) the alarm rings at 5:00AM. Coffee is brewed and after a couple of cups of coffee and a quick breakfast we suit up and head out making the long 400 yard trek to the blind. At 6:15AM we are settled in and wait. We sat there watching and listening to the woods wake up. There was no wind, and it was cool but not terribly cold. The skies were clear and the stars were out. As we sat there, at about 7:20 AM I noticed a deer come out from high thick brush across the cut corn field directly across from where we were sitting. This was about 50 yards or so. It starts walking along the edge of the brush toward our right stopping and sniffing the air every other step. I grab my binos and see that it is a small 6 pt. I whisper to my son get yourself ready. We watch this buck continue along toward our right and about to turn back into the brush, so I grab my grunt call and let out a few grunts. He stops dead in his tracks. I let out a few more grunts and he makes a 180 degree turn and starts walking toward us at an angle. He steps out into the cut corn field and stops at about 60 yards from us at a quartering away angle while looking in our direction. I whisper again to my son, if you feel ready take the shot. The buck stood there for about 20 secs presenting him a perfect shot. My son squeezes the trigger and the buck kicks and runs into the thick brush. I'm thinking it was not such a good shot as the deer just trotted away disappearing into the thicket. My son starts shaking at that point as we sit there a few minutes to let it sink in for him. He tells me that he panicked when the buck came out of the thicket but was able to calm down aimed small and took the shot. It was after he squeezed the trigger and the buck ran off that he got buck fever . . . go figure! Now given the fact that there were others in our group out there hunting and so as not to spook any chances of their taking a deer, we sat and waited. We continued to wait all the while I'm playing the scenario in my mind over and over again wondering if he got a good shot on him. Now we waited for about 1 1/4 hours. How did I keep him from running out after the deer you ask? Well, Iphone games of course. Finally at 8:45 my BIL comes down off the tree and walks to another stand closer to where the buck ran into the thicket and climbs up. Scopes the area to look for any other deer that may be in the thicket and waves us on to go search. My son and I grab our rifles and head out to the point where he was standing when he was shot. We see no sign of blood and I start to worry if my son connected. We find a well used trail heading into the thicket and we proceed to follow it. We start walking about 10 - 15 yards into the trail still not seeing blood when my son shouts out and points to a splatter of blood on our right. We take some more steps and find another area of more blood and then a few more steps and then off to our right we see the white belly of the deer. We walk up to and without saying a word my son kneels down and thanks God for the opportunity to take this fine animal. We take a few pictures and my brother in law comes down and helps us drag it into the corn field. We tag him and wait for my BIL to get the tractor so we can bring him back to the house for processing. After gutting and skinning him (and yes I made my son help me do it much to his dismay and with comments like "how can you hold its poop shoot like that?" and "How can you just stick your hands in his body and pull out the guts?") I told him that shooting it is the easy part and that this part of the hunt is showing respect for the animal so that we can use and consume it. He smiled and got his hands in there with me. Saturday afternoon's sit was not as successful as the morning hunt and we saw nothing moving. Sunday morning's sit was also uneventful given the fact that there was thick fog across the property and we could not see that far in front of us. Nevertheless, I would say it was a successful opening weekend for my son as no one else including myself connected opening weekend. I think the smile says it all. He's already asking to go back up this weekend! I think he's addicted! More importantly I may have created a monster and a hunting buddy for life!!

  35. I told my wife a few stories, she said "oh, too much detail".., How does a passionate hunter leave out this crucial detail? I can't. Well couple years ago I got a nice deer. I was back home showered, and headed to dinner at my parents. Group of 10 people said hey tell me the story of your harvest. As I'm about to, my wife interrupts and says, "I didn't know you got one, why wouldn't you tell me?" I quickly respond, you don't listen when I try, I give you too many details. She responded, "you're an a$$hole." Bottom line, I tell the stories to the people who get goosebumps. If you don't, well, that's your loss!

  40. A real friend would never have done that. He sounds like a greedy, selfish, person. And I understand why no one else wants to hunt with this guy. Especially after he has already killed two deer! Hope he missed the 10 point and hit a branch. Sounds like that may be the case.
