Been kind of a tough year for me so far until today! Seen a few nice bucks during bow but couldn't get a shot. Got a nice fat doe with crossbow for the freezer, but no buck. Since the start of gun it has been real slow on both of the properties. Saw a few doe and couple small bucks in my area of 4-H, after hunting hard every day. Decided early this morning to go to a spot on the farm property, where I had seen a nice buck during bow season. It's a very thick brushy ridge overlooking a swamp. A natural ground blind near the top. Wind was in my face and above 60 degrees. About 1:30, I see movement below me but it's so thick, I cant make out what it is. Soon I see it's a decent buck! After what seemed a long time, he makes his way to within 20 yards, and a high shoulder shot from my new 7mm-08 with Nosler BT, ends the hunt with my first rifle kill. Not the biggest buck on the property, but I'm super happy with him. Dressed 189lbs.23 points

Got this 8 point at 9:20 this morning that was running just inside the woods 70 yards away. . He had a bad limp and a dislocated shoulder so I decided to take it...the fact that it's a nice deer is just a bonus. I had no more then a few seconds to shoot and I was able to pull off a heart shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk14 points

Finally.. Wow. What a good morning. So I'm sitting in my ground blind and I see movement off to the right in some thick shit maybe 40 yards. After a second I see a deer materialize and see horns (more than one..). I shoulder my 30-06 and click safety and I look through the scope and I'm right on him. He stopped in his tracks for me and I took a breath and touched off a round. He bolted and I said some very naughty words. I saw him run maybe 10 yards and lost site of him. After sitting a bit I went to look for blood. I had the angle marked well but not the exact spot after a few mins of searching I was not happy. Luckily.. I found hair, but unluckily it was all white. I spent some time looking for blood but not a drop was found. I was on his trail as I could see disturbance in the leaves. No blood. by this time I see Orange the direction the deer ran and I'm confused and the deer should have run by this guy. No shots so I started to crack a bit of a smile. He might just be down here somewhere. Where I hunt is a steep gulley and I go to the edge and peek over and see the deer laying there!!!! It sees me and more not so good words, it gets up and tries to scale the other side of the gulley. It's not doing well but well enough so I touch off another round and it falls. Head still up I sit there and head falls.. Woo hoo. Lessons.. I need more practice with my 30-06. I only found one hole so far. behind the vitals and low. Just barely a gut shot. That may have been second shot though as it was kind of moving and at a weird angle. Not sure yet. Literally barely gut. When I opened it up I think I hit the stomach. Corn was present though not much. It did not smell horrible. Just a trace of corn and small amount of green. Very small. This is the largest buck I've gotten and first with 30-06. Don't beat me up real bad.. I have shot and can hit target pretty well. Buck fever gets me. Here he is... Edit: the deer stopped I think due to making the hunter. I think that deer was seconds away from bolting.13 points

Was fortunate enough to take these two opening morning about 5 minutes apart..he came busting in behind me running three does in circles...once I repositioned my rifle he took off downhill after one doe...the second doe wandered behind some tress and headed down hill as well leaving the big girl I was able to take locked up at about 35-40 yards...I let the .30-.06 bark and she dropped within 20 yards after I caught lung-top of heart-lung. So I decided to call my wife and let her know we had a deer down, and low and behold I look down hill and the buck is peaking at me from behind a tree at about 120 yards....I told my wife I had to go and out the phone down, carefully took aim and drilled him with a liver-lung-lung shot quartering away...he was down 40 yards later and my freezer was instantly full!! Great memories and a great opening day spent at camp in 9p. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk11 points

The 30-30s were the hot guns in deer camp on opening day.. 3 single shots took 3 deer.. A nice 9 pt, a 6 pt and a fat doe... The Tree of Life was blooming.. While everyone in the surrounding camps were crying about the lack of deer, we had them crawling all over with 4 guys in camp seeing 28 deer...7 points

Wednesday 11-25. Not a beast of a buck by any means but respectable size to his body. Shot him seconds after looking at a back tag my Pop gave me for good luck to put in my tag holder. 25 yards with muzzle loader. Six point7 points

It only took 8 weeks but I was finally able to connect. Sat in my ground blind tonight. She came out at 3:20 walking through the tall grass. Was at 10 yards at one point but I had no shot. She finally cleared and turned broadside at 36 yards. The Obsession bow and Rage broadhead did the rest. She ran about 40 yards and piled up from the double lung shot. Glad to finally get one on the ground! Let's hope it's all down hill from here. She dressed out at 105 lbs.5 points

The doe on the left is the one i got this am, My buddy and i decided too just stand around in the woods this am, We figured that people would start pushing the deer and sure enough, after 20 mins of just standing there shooting the bull, Four doe ran into the wood lot, I took aim with my 30-30 and dropped her in her tracks, The deer on the right is my buddies deer, He asked if he could bring his daughter with him to hunt last night, so i threw a ground blind up in the middle of a large hay field and this bb comes out with a smaller one, At the time he didnt realize it was a bb, but it doesnt really matter, His daughter was happy and seeing as he is injured and cant walk right now, And i didnt have to drag the deer very far, I didnt mind him shooting it, His daughter cant wait till she is old enough to hunt, That is what its about for me, Passing down the tradition, Sorry for the pick up pics but in hurry to get to the butcher and then home to get ready for dinner,4 points

My name is Tamara. I live in New Hampshire but hunt in Bath, NY every November and just registered for hunting in Long Island. My first passion is salt water fishing. I am relatively new to hunting. I haven't harvested a deer yet but did get a 240 lb bear in NH this fall. Very exciting. I am surely finding this to be a new passion. I don't believe in wasting any of the animal. I have absolute respect for this community and look forward to learning so much more. ????3 points

11/28/2015 We went on a track this morning that the hunter reported he had white hair and good dark blood on. At the hit site I found white and brown hair and a decent amount of bright red blood. Luna quickly advanced the track past the hunters point of loss, and we found a bone fragment early on. The blood varied from a tiny drop here and there to larger areas where the deer stopped. I believe we were tracking a leg shot deer and weren't too far behind it. All the blood we were finding was very fresh, and several times Luna's excitement level drastically increased. A good half of this mile and a half track was through thick prickly ash. I was definitely slowing Luna down as I tried to fight through it. We ended up in a swamp, and it got to the point the water was too deep for Luna. I'd carry her and when we came to an intersection I'd set her down long enough to show me which trail to take. It eventually got too deep for us humans too. We walked around the deep part and checked every trail coming out, but never got back on it. I believe it stayed in the swamp. I consider this a successful track for Luna and felt bad that she didn't get her reward at the end. I did share some venison jerky with her on the drive home.3 points

Finally made it happen today and got a small 6. I was tired of waiting for the "big" one I needed something the the freezer and he was the unlucky one that walked by. Now time for a big doe.3 points

A 125 lb dressed doe is pretty big. Probably older than 1.5. Too many stories told every year of the mythical 200 lb does that get shot around here. I worked as a taxidermist for a few years and if I had a nickel for every "150 lb" doe2 points
-
Doe has to be older than 1.5 , aging teeth by looking is inexact and tooth ring analysis is only true way. But average dressed weight for a 1.5 buck is 112-115 here and a doe is 90 to 97. That's 23 years of recording them in a log off a good scale, a doe that weighs that much here is 2.5 or older.2 points

I never call in gun, bow if I need to pull a buck in range that I see, that's it. Hunt funnels, trails to bedding/cover. They come thru naturally (or escaping other hunters) and with gun if I see them I usually have shot. But I hunt fairly thick stuff in gun 70 yards visable max usually closer to 40.2 points

Headed out if 4f in a bit. Some huge ones taken off " buck hill" at my father in law the past couple days. Hoping to fill doe tag. Pic below is my 4 pt and his 10 point we got 10 mins apart. There have been others but no pics2 points

Unles it's all you have, has sentimental value or you like the added challenge there is not a single benefit to slug gun over a rifle.2 points

2nd sounds like a leg hit, you won't find it , it can heal and can go for miles, always put a second shot into a deer you can see. Your better off losing 5 lbs of meat from second hole than a deer.2 points

Hunting in Churchville (8G), this morning. She came in with a huge doe, but they knew something was wrong, & they were really alert. They were about to bolt, so I took the first chance I had. 15yards. Thankful to have her.2 points

Took the top section of my climber out ( summit open shot, no rail) n had a nice comfy seat at the base of the tree , don't know why I never did that years ago .... Spotted her early n slipped off the seat n propped the gun up on the climber seat n she came into the scope n bang , dropped like a sack a potatoes 70 ish yds out ... Yikes, reminds me why I don't post here often. Regretful, given that on this forum there can be good information shared and a sense of brotherhood (or sisterhood; whatever). It's sad because I catch flack from other women because I hunt; I catch flack (and the wrong kind of attention) from guys because I'm a woman. I have few to turn to and talk about hunting without feeling like, well, the odd woman out. Doubly sad because I am deeply involved in conservation issues with the FWS, and I do public outreach to try to garner support of hunting and sustainable conservation on a regular basis now. Despite often feeling unwelcome by BOTH sides. Anyhow, it doesn't do much good to post this stuff but I really do hope that everyone is careful about ticks, Lyme disease, and other tick-borne diseases (as there are a few others, and all are nasty). Best wishes, all.2 points

This is so true I love it when guys at work run up to me to show me their kills and they always weigh around 180 and I always ask "oh you have a scale?" And the answer is almost always the same "well no but it was around there"1 point

Nope. No reason to. I don't care if I can only shoot 60 yds, I'll still take a rifle over shotgun any day. In fact I don't deer hunt with a shotgun at all anymore. Rifle or muzzleloader/Ruger Redhawk .44Mag Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk1 point

I have found the best solution is to have someone there on a regular basis.. I realize that can be hard due to time and distance, but make a friend with someone local.. Maybe give them the opportunity to hunt your property in return for keeping and eye on it and stopping there regularly. The piece of mind is well worth it. There are a lot of other benefits that come with having a local connection...1 point
