No cranker here, but you can imagine how sweet a gals first deer/buck was at the end of the day. I've never had such a happy hunt in my entire life! It wasn't the most perfect shot. She caught him a lil far back so we trailed him over 300yds. My head was glued to the blood trail which was running out by the step. Sis looked over and spotted him trying to get to his feet. A littlttle confusion amongst us at that point, but she finally settled the crosshairs to DUMP him for good! This was my most memorable hunt EVER! F= big bucks!8 points

I was running around doing some last minute Christmas things early yesterday afternoon. It was real warm out. About 60 degrees anyway. I was driving South on Rte. 11 in Brewerton. When I approached the bridge, over the river near the Waterfront, I saw 4 or 5 people on the bridge looking East toward Rte 81. They had their phones out taking pictures of something. I slowed down to look . It was a guy water skiing in the river!!! How many people can say that they water skied in New York on Christmas eve???!! Quite a sight.6 points

By the way, I would like to make an observation from some nearby state land. Most of the trash that I have found and removed was concentrated on the trails gouged into the forest floor my mountain bikers and the constant string of hikers that use those trails also. So, trying to blame it all on hunters is a pure distortion of facts. Oh, and aren't those blobs of bright colored paint splashed all over the trees next to the trails attractive. It's as if these bikers and hikers are all semi blind and unable to recognize the maze of dirt ditches that they are riding on. And while the DEC gets all excited over a hunter nipping a branch or two, they don't seem to have any problem with the bikers having a field-day with chainsaws removing limbs and downed logs. They do this with DEC permission and blessing. And then too, speaking of trash in the woods, I can't say that I have seen a whole lot of hunters walking through the woods carrying those mylar balloons that nobody seems to have a problem releasing into the air without a care where they will fall and become litter. People that would never think to thrown non-biodegradable materials out their car windows will stand there and oo-o-o & ah-h-h while they turn loose these party balloons totally unconcerned where they will eventually wind up. What friggin stupidity!5 points

I've been waiting for a golden crack at a red fox for some time now but never pulled the trigger since I didn't know what the hell I'd do with one. On 11-3-15 this dude came rolling by the stand at 8yds and I immediately knew I would come up with something.] He was originally supposed to be turned into a fuzzy trappers hat, but insteaed got sewed into a ML accessory pouch. I sewed a fleece liner and stitched it in the best I could. It ain't perfect, but it 's a great reminder of the quiet encounter.4 points

Times are changing! In past years it'd be all over LONG before this. All the gifts would be opened and trash would be knee deep in the family room. Now it's just me and the pooch, listening to xmas music on satellite radio. I came down at 6:30; took my meds, fed the dog (after I kicked her butt OFF the couch!), took a walk around the block, made coffee and just finished reading the morning paper. As I walked the neighborhood I didn't see much sign of early risers either. When I was a kid, oh boy were we up early! I don't hear any stirring upstairs.......maybe it's time to start making pancakes, that'll wake 'em! Last night our daughter was out late with her boyfriend; dinner with his parents then exchanging gifts. Son was just hanging out and the wife was wupped from all the build up and holiday stress that takes much of the joy out of it for her. I wrapped a few presents after doing the dinner dishes, then headed to the cellar to continue the post hunting season re-organization and inventory. Who has the young kids? Post up some pics if you're so inclined, I miss those days. (But I'll never admit it to my wife!) I hope you all have a great day, however it is spent and whoever you spend it with. Merry Christmas, Larry4 points

12-17-15 Also shot a decent six and a big doe the day before Thanksgiving with the muzzle loader This doe and about 11 or 12 more came ripping out of the dark pines below me. Still don't know what spooked them. Only had a split second to react. May have been buck(s) in with them but no time to check. I verbally bleated after picking out the biggest body I could see in that split second. She locked up literally under my stand. Quickly got the scope on her. She went about 10 yards Took off top of heart and pretty sure both lungs. Mile drag as a crow flies , fun. 2 hours later thru blow downs , brambles , beaver swamp and creek I had her to the car. Believe me that dragging two that other day really sucked. They'll all taste all that much better though. Tipped around 110 hours during gun and muzzle loader season in the woods. Just love my ml. I've killed more deer with it than both my slug guns. And dang Wooly , a fine buck and great photo as always. Wish I would have had a chance to wear my snow camo4 points

Off to a bad start this shed season. Gonna be lots of dead deer laying around since we didn't have any snow for 99% of the season. I started wandering around a little more near the end of ML season and it didn't take long to start finding some unrecovered casualties from the 2015. My first find was a little spiker that was already reduced to a skeleton by the critters. I just sawed off his headgear. Shortly after that I discovered a 1/2 rack 4pt that couldn't have been laying there too long by the looks of him. Pretty nice buck for a 2pt. Wednesday I got out for a quick afternoon hike and found a buck I was really looking forward to killing myself, or seeing next season. Unfortunately neither of those happened. He was piled up with an arrow sticking out of his guts just in front of his hind leg. I saw this guy a few times after I already filled my archery buck tag so he got to walk. Hate to see him this way, but this is one skull I really wanted and I'm glad I found him before the yotes chewed his face off. I'm afraid to see what else will be laying around out there this year at this rate.3 points

13 year old daughter got the Mrs. and I up at 6:30. Here she is with her Vera Bradley bag for ballet. Notice all the smelly bath stuff , body sprays etc on the table. A girlie girl who loves to hunt and fish with me. Has been putting night crawlers on her own hook since she was 4 , up and dressed for turkey hunting at 3:02 when alarm goes off at 3. Enjoys "bass thumb ". She's a keeper. It's wonderful to have her around but she's growing up too fast. Merry Christmas to you Larry and yours.3 points

Join every pro gun organization you can. Stop voting for anyone who doesn't support the 2nd Amendment. Stop thinking anti-gun laws that don't affect you personally are OK or justified. Stop thinking certain types of compromise with the anti's is good. Stand up against any and all infringements on your rights without fail! The government is not your friend, and any anti-gun elected official is your enemy!3 points

Now I agree with everything said as far as bottles, cans, wrappers, coffee cups, empty bottles of "buck bomb". Anything along those lines should be carried out. But are you seriously telling me you carry out your used toilet paper, rather than bury it? That is beyond unreasonable. You do understand that toilet paper breaks down in oh about one good rain shower? I'm all for conservation but when I have to "go" in the woods the used TP ain't coming with me.3 points

The caption of this picture was "We saw his star in the east, & have come to worship him". It made me think about how thankful I am, that I get to share such a wonderful part of my life, with such great people. We come from all walks of life & we disagree often, but we all unite on a love for God's creation. Outdoorsmen, I think, have a unique understanding of our bond to our Creator & the natural world. As we look back at the year, let's be thankful for our time out there with family & friends, our harvests, & win or lose, just the blessing to experience it all. I see this group as a family. A dysfunctional family, but a family. Thanks for making me feel a part of you this year, & sharing your adventures with me. God willing, here's to many more!2 points

This writing has been on the wall now for awhile, and I say again us sportsmen are too lazy (or dumb) to do anything to combat it. I don't know of ANY organized sporting group leading a stance against this slippery slope which is aggressively attacking deer. So time will tick on and very soon NY will be even MORE of a JOKE to hunt. Sooner than you realize it will effect YOUR hunting and YOUR backyard. I say start with a widespread boycott of buying hunting licenses to get their attention. Back to my xmas coffee.2 points

The reasons given made no sense as I explained. So I am still curious as to what the attraction is and hoping there is someone who can explain it. Perhaps I'm missing out on something if someone will take the time to honestly explain it all to me with real and logical answers. I would appreciate that rather than a whole bunch of uncalled for feigned outrage and defensiveness. And by the way, in case it all went over your head, I am not attacking the weapon or the use of it. I am simply trying to understand what people feel are the reasons for wanting to use them. Nothing aggressive or unfriendly or anything for you to be getting all indignant about. Just curiosity. It is the same kinds of questions I have asked a thousand times about different makes of bows, and certain calibers and models of rifles or shotguns. Frankly, I have never had anybody ever take offense over my asking those kinds of questions.2 points

Look, I'm just asking reasonable questions, and hoping for reasonable answers, not some snide comments of who things are all about or aren't. Nobody gets into things without some logical reasons. I'm just curious as to what those reasons possibly could be. If you can't come up with any, don't feel bad. So far nobody else has either.2 points

The DEC is simply building a case to maintain deer populations at levels that satisfy the politics of satisfying moneyed stakeholders. Yes, we all remember days when hunting was exciting because of so many opportunities. Apparently the DEC has decided to put the "hunt" back into hunting. And boy the explanations all fly fast and furious each year, don't they? Some of the more arrogant hunters like to blame it all on hunters who apparently have recently gotten stupid or lazy or blind, or who just simply all of a sudden don't have a clue how to hunt. And then there are the weather critics ...... it was too warm. Don't like that one, how about too many acorns ....ok how about not enough acorns? Bad winters? Predators? Look, how about the answer that makes the most sense. The DEC's estimates of herd size are either mistakenly too high, or they simply are purposely distorting the numbers to support their agenda of whacking down the herd to something that is insignificant in terms of deer damage to the various financial interests who are impacted by the deer. The big question now is just how far down do they have to draw the herd size down to satisfy all those squeaky wheels that have established political control over DEC policies. I guess time will tell. And in the mean time we will listen to those that remember a better time. and we will still be amused at all of the annual excuses as to why we just aren't seeing the deer we used to. And the DEC will continue to claim higher and higher deer populations. Its all pretty fun to watch.2 points

Tell your friend to go somewhere else and buy/enjoy the new gun. Lever action has nothing to do with new regulations. And even semi-auto .22s with tube magazine are OK (Marlin model 60, etc)2 points

It's not just the woods that are being trashed . Volunteers pick up trash thrown out of vehicles along the highways . You see the Orange trash bags filled up ready for pickup . In a few days the highway is trashed again . What the hell is wrong with people . Nothing but SLOBS !2 points

Managed a nice 10 point in 8F this season. Measured out at 135" with 5" bases, think red bull can... Not my biggest but a wall hanger. Story: I got to my parking location with all intentions of hunting one of my other stand sets for the wind we had (South/Southeast) but really wanted to check my camera card. So I decided I would take a look at the camera card and if something happened to come in at this stand in the usual place I would still be able to shoot it. So being hopeful and talking myself into this stand I made the noisy trek across a plowed field (heavy frost and frozen top layer of mud). As I walked I could hear the woods moving and starting to wake up but still too dark to see past 5', I also used my grunt call and lightly grunted as I walked across the field. I got to my camera 10' from the bottom of my tree stand and heard a branch break and what sounded like a deer grunt but dismissed it as a squirrel. I quietly got my card out and replaced with a blank and heard another branch break and another grunt. This time a little louder and deep. I moved as shiftly as possible without making a sound to the bottom of the tree and slowly and quietly ascended the tree. It wasn't 20 minutes and series of light grunts until 2 shadows made their way into the plowed field at this point I could tell the first deer was either a fawn followed by a big doe or a doe followed by a big buck either way I could only make out the bodies. Once it started to get a little lighter ~ 10minutes I could make out the deer and to my surprise it was one of the "hit list" bucks. I pulled up the rifle clicked off the safety and rested the cross hairs on the top of his back. I knew at 100 and 200 yards my gun shoots dead on so this 160 yard shot was a chip shot for the old .270 win. The deer was straight away ready to step back into the thick brush when I pulled the trigger. After the shot I looked for him in my scope and with my binoculars but could not find him. I decided to wait for my nerves to settle down before I climbed down. As I walked across the field I was replaying the shot over and over thinking how did I miss. I get to where I thought I shot looking around for blood. As I looked to my left I could see him laying just inside the weeds. He must have jumped and landed just out of sight from my stand. To say the least he is one of the nicest deer I have shot in a while, he might not be the biggest but definitely a trophy. I had spent countless hours hunting this deer during bow season but had not been around until the wed. before thanksgiving.2 points

I know I've posted this before, but for the predator hunters who haven't seen it yet, here is a video of my Dad shooting 2 wolves in British Columbia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M545PXOwmqY Background is this was my Dad's 4th or 5th trip to Canada (several different outfitters/provinces) in hopes of getting a shot at a wolf. Finally after over 30 combined days of hunting over bait over several years, he got an opportunity and drilled them both. That's the reason for the serious excitement you see my Dad display. This all started back in the mid 2000's when my Dad told me he would pay for me to go on a hunt for a couple grand and it was my choice on the species. I chose Wolf and Alberta, he thought I was joking. After our trip to Alberta where I shot the coyote in the picture I previously posted, my Dad became obsessed with getting a wolf. I would say a wolf on a guided hunt is the lowest success rates on any animal in N. America. Unless you can go for like 30 straight days, its very tough to get one into bait. Most wolves are shot while people are hunting other types of game.1 point

LOL, Im one of the guys that refused to hunt the doe only seasons. I have no issue putting does on the ground. I put 4 in my freezer during gun season and missed a shot at another during bow. Doc hit the nail on the head as to why I refused to participate.1 point
-
Don't confuse people refusing to be bullied into participating in a foolish, idiotic plan with refusing to do their part in harvesting deer. Those of us who see that doe-only, bowhunter-only, plan for what it truly is have no problem taking does. What we don't accept is the idea that doe harvests and deer population control is solely the responsibility of the smallest group of hunters shooting the most inefficient weapon. That plan and the way it was implemented cast a dark shadow over the credibility of the DEC sincerity about the problem.1 point
