  2. I’d like to share a treasure. It may not be as much a treasure to you (the readers) as it is to me. But, I want to share it just for my own gratification. The inspiration came from a forum post on this website where a few of you were talking about keeping journals. Your journals were probably different reasons but I’d like to express the increase in value to the family when the author is no longer around. It’s nothing more than a portion from my father’s journals that describes his very first hunting trip to the Adirondacks but first let me give you a little background. Dad, at this time, was a single farm boy, 22 years of age, sixth grade education and trying to get by working for the town and doing odd farm work to get by during the depression. That being said here is the journal excerpt copied into text just as he wrote it. November 1929 1 F We put up snow fence. I got my deer license. I got a check for $63.00. 2 S We did not work today. I went out town and got the rest of my hunting outfit and got everything packed. We start at 6 Oclock in the morning for Star Lake. 3 Su Thirteen of us started for the mountains about 9 Oclock. We got to Star Lake about 6 Oclock. We had supper at Young’s Camp and stayed all night. 4 M We loaded our camping stuff on a wagon and went back in the woods about 9 miles and got our tent set up and some wood cut and beds set up in time to go to bed. 5 T The guide come this morning and we started hunting. We did not git any thing. 6 W I saw the first deer I ever saw runing wild. two does and a fawn standing about 50 ft away. They stood and look right at me for about a minit. We got one buck today an 8 point. 7 Th We didn’t get anything today. 8 F We didn’t get anything. 9 S We got two bucks. It got dark and we had to leave one over across the river. One 6 point and one 12 point. 10 Su We went over and got the one we left last night. I missed the first buck I saw. We got one other one today a 12 point. 11 M We got one today a 6 point. 2 points on one side and 4 on the other. 12 T I shot mine - a 6 point. Hugh Moag got his about twenty minutes after. an other 6 pointer. 13 W We didn’t git anything today. 14 Th We got one today – a 3 point. Mr. Young come in and got all the deer but the last one. We didn’t have him in camp yet. 15 F We packed up and Mr. Young came in and got our stuff. We had supper at his place and stayed all night. 16 S We got our stuff all packed on the truck and in the cars and started home about noon. We got in Perry Center about 10 Oclock. Clark came out and got Warren Brown and I. I got my check for $4.50 from the town. 17 Su We all went down to Leslie Wright’s and got our pictures taken with the deer. The trip cost us about $21.00. ggg

  5. Lawdwaz- whenever you use a vacuum sealer on any meat that has blood or condensation on it, you just put a thin strip of an absorbent paper towel at the top of the bag just below where the seal will be made. As the sealer sucks air from the bag, the blood or condensation will be absorbed by the paper towel and you will not get any of it into the sealer and you will get a nice tight seal. I hope this helps you out.

  7. We have 12-17 turks coming to the bird feeder every day. One big tom but only about a 6" beard, 4-5 jakes & the rest are hens 3-4 have 2" beards. One hen has a silver band on its leg. They eat at the feeders then go 100 yds out back & sit under the pine trees, then a few hours later will show up again at the feeders eat & leave until the next day.

  10. I buy the rolls instead of the bags. That way I can make the bag to the size I need. The sealer is just like any other tool .... the more you use it, the better you get with it.

  12. I've been wanting to try my hand at taxidermy for a while now. A friend walked me through the mounting process on my bow buck from this past season. I ended up picked up 5 bucks to mount. After dealing with some serious frustrations with the whole splitting/fleshing of the face, I finally had a cape ready for the pickle and tanning process. The test subject was my wife's opening morning buck. Thankfully, everything came together smoothly and I'm pretty happy with the results. Now, just have to give it a couple weeks to dry...then I can airbrush, paint and add the finishing touches. BEFORE: On to the next one!!!

  19. So every guy that gets a blow job from a willing female that is of legal age is committing sexual assault? I would suspect that most of the males here would be guilty of sexual assault then.

  22. Mike - Of course this is more complicated. Of course there are ranchers doing the right thing. It is like hunters. Some are very good at pursuing their goals while completely ignorant what is going on around them. Others model themselves after Aldo L. Some are slobs. The far-right narrative here on this issue has been "Why Are Leftists So Gung-Ho About Shooting Americans For Disobeying Government?" and "federal overreach". The complexity of federal land use - whether we are talking minerals/fossil fuels extraction, logging, grazing, off-road vehicles, etc. - and the impacts of those activities on wildlife, vegetation and hydrology are important to hunters and others who care about wildlife and habitat. You will not find these concerns addressed by the far-right, at least not here in the political forum. While I may enjoy poking the wingnuts, it is necessary to point out - for this issue and others - concerns and motivations that other readers here may be unaware of. I see this as no different than the coyote discussions. The black/white dialog obscures the reality. The discussions here tend to be emotional reactions not intelligent conversations. I learned long ago, if an issue is leaning hard one way, the best way to bring it to the middle is not to position yourself in the middle of the road. I rarely - almost never - advocate a rigid position here. My hope is to raise questions. This angers a couple of the regulars but it provides an opportunity for those seeing a constant stream of cut and paste propaganda to question, and hopefully research and learn. On the first confrontation - over Cliven Bundy's unpaid grazing fees - I do believe that the feds backing down has emboldened these people. Talk about slippery slopes. Will this be the new normal: every angry white guy with a gun who objects to federal land policy will call out the so-called "militias"? This certainly does not help facilitate an intelligent discussion. You are entirely too reasonable. To paraphrase Mrs. C. "Mike Rossi, STOP MAKING SENSE!"

  29. Dad is the gent photo shopped in color. Unfortunately the old man is not around to answer all the question I forgot to ask back then. He had mentioned about half the names but I never wrote his stories down. I do recall him saying not everyone held their own gun for the picture and the one he's holding is not his. He had a Winchester 38 with the stock cut short for his arm length. There is more to tell and I'll let you all know when.

  30. Hello everybody, my name is Jim and have been an avid hunter for around 30 yrs. I hunt mostly just deer with bow/muzzleloader and rifle, mostly on the Tughill plateau. I live in the Watertown NY area. I consider myself a meat hunter first/trophy hunter second. I have never been a part of any forum at all but have been reading some posts on here now for a few weeks and it seems like a great group of hunters. I cant get enough of talking about my favorite pastime and I look forward to trading stories and information with people of like minded interests as well as meeting new friends

  31. Unfortunately no. This is the 2nd B&C 12 I've had at that location in 2 years. Both were killed during gun season, neither by me. I may have played a role in getting both of them killed though, so I have been learning to keep my mouth shut until after they are dead. This year I only shared info with my FIL and he was the one that put the guy that ended up killing the buck in the right spot at the right time. My intention was for my FIL to get him. 2014: (me drooling over the mount) 2015: (one in the video)

  33. That F^&^%&& Kindle! Mr. B gets the PC at night so I use the kindle...I rewrote that several times and know what it looked like before each send ...when you touch send it eliminates the on screen keyboard and shows what will go out. Then you hit send again....So normally I catch them or most of it....The kindle not only replaces words, but whole sentences???? After a while it just tires me out! He wanted to get me a lap top for Christmas and I said no...WTH was I thinking!

  34. In this case I did put a little Smokey's preorbital gland lure, but in the past I haven't used anything. In fact, I only put the lure on some overhanging branches and not on the rub itself. Location and eye appeal are #1. Once that 1st smaller buck rubbed it and left his scent, it was game on.

  40. Lol ...... Killed, cleaned, and cooked all with just one squeeze of the trigger. Just kidding. I don't know anything about a 300 Win Mag. Never shot one and probably never will. But from what I have read, they do have a rep for being a bit on the "mean" side.

  41. Deer are having a great year so far. These are in good rig, and some normally ugly winter weather has been stalled off and is behind them. It all means more preserved winter fat to help them out later. Life is good!

  44. never smelled fox urine. All my life smells seem to be stored in my head and when I smell something like them again it reminds me of the time I smelled it first. Smelled this today and it reminded me of being around the buck I shot this last season. Do fox urine and buck tarsal glands smell similar?

  47. This is basically the heart of the matter as far as the Constitution is concerned: It defines the "Property Clause" regarding federal land ownership. It's a long and convoluted history, that is the reason today's controversy exits. http://www.heritage.org/constitution/#!/articles/4/essays/126/property-clause

They are coming into birds..or at the very least...finding them in the area once they pass. I usually take the camera with me...here are some pics and a few cam ones enjoy.... Ps..... not the best photographer ,by far...but some fond memories I thought I'd share on a wintry day
