Just curious if you "putt" him out of strut so he sticks his head up outstretched . If he's displaying I'll give him a verbal "putt" so he's like WTF. It's the last thing he ever hears. I've shot one bird many years ago in strut. Took off most of the beard and riddled the breasts pretty bad. I don't get why on TV other than for good video why the shoot em all puffed up with head tucked low. Gotta say if anyone touches one off with these new Winchester XR's at close range that bird is toast.3 points

Just picked up this Glock Mod.19 ( 9mm) today . Had a Mod 23 ( 40 cal) since '92 but decided to consolidate some calibers , 40 ammo is pricey and 9 mm factory hollow points have come a long ways in recent years. Got it under the blue label program . Between selling the 40 with a few mags and tossing in some ammo and the BL program ,cost me $75 .3 points

Just in case someone is considering buying a call from Rick Howard. Buy with confindence. I bought a maple burl that looks and sounds awesome. Highly recommended.3 points

In the past five or six years have gotten a lot more practical, as far as buying gear. I get it if I need it or if its a big improvement over what I already have. But when it comes to guns,,,Im completely out of control. I need group therapy .3 points

I figured I'd start up this thread for the 2016 spring season approaching. Guys/gals may be out scouting ahead of time so feel free to post what's happening out there. Next weekend is youth hunt. I wish everyone a wonderful ,safe and memorable season. Looking forward to stories and pics.2 points

After work today I was at Charles Tyrwhitt buying some clothes when I was interrupted by some guy and his security team. This guy came in to shop too and the store is pretty small. People outside were going nuts taking pics and stuff. I figured he was a politician or something, so I asked one of the security guards who this guy was and he said he's running for president. Who knew lol.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I'm going out tomorrow afternoon to try and catch some Browns and or cohoes. I went with a guide a couple years ago, there really isn't much to it this time of year. Just dragging stickbaits in shallow water. Having said that I welcome any and all tips!2 points

I prefer to have his neck stretched, but if he's close enough I just kill him. If he is in good range, I don't screw around..I kill him.. I have had too many encounters go bad at the last second.. I remember a quote from "The Old Pro Turkey Hunter" by Gene Nunnery.. " Whenever you are in contact with an adult gobbler, there are events taking place every second, any one of which may result in your winning or losing the game ." Or words to that effect. Did I mention the fact that when he is in range and I can get my gun on him, I KILL him.?2 points

Years ago, I was faced with this very situation. The gobbler was following a hen right towards me. Never came out of strut even with me calling. Took the shot at his head area only to find out afterwards that because of his head tucked down low into his body, I shot the dang beard clean off!!! Lesson learned the hard way for me, never again will I try that shot.2 points

Only tip I have is throw them mercury ridden things back. Unless you like glowing in the dark that is2 points

I'm just happy to get a shot and usually don't have the patience lol.2 points

Depends for me. First available shot I roll em.. Preferably wait till he comes out of strutt but if he gives me a full frontal view , even if his head is tucked he's history , but only if he's close , say within 15 yds , the pattern is so tight at that point aim for the beak n never really had an issue with pellets in the breasts. I've had a few heartbreakers that went bad giving them a cluck and all out haul ass outa there ... But I try to let it play out , if I think he's loosing interest or smells something fishy I'll give a few soft yelps so he sticks his kisser up to look ... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Not sure where you are getting you numbers. our banquet alone will be 250 for just one NY branch. I do get a kick out of some that expect an organization of hunter to have immediate and controlling influence over a government agency. Hell as hunters we can't even get on the same page for simple causes like gun control. I have to disagree with you about what the "bottom line" is. What you describe and what some out there want it TDM. Trophy Deer Management. They are not the same approach. They have similar component like monitoring and adjusting the buck to doe ratios but the goals are not even close. TDM is focused on growing trophy racks. I also disagree about the "holding deer on their property" part. I know more members that either don't own property or own parcels that are too small to ever try and hold a population on them. That doesn't seem to diminish their desire or efforts to practice QDM. Seems pretty foolish for them I guess since you are so certain their motives are so selfish.2 points

In general , yes buying "American " is often harder . But an outdoorsman still can easily buy American made outdoor products. A few I own , tree stands , knives, flashlights , water bottles, guns, and up until Sentry moved to Mexico the safes to keep them all in. Toss in Redwing boots and some of the Danners. My Lone Wolf stands, Surefire lights , Benchmade, Spyderco and Stider knives are second to none , many with liftime no questions asked warranties . Not for hunting but my Allen Edmond shoes ,made in Wisconsin are well made quilty shoes that are recraftable, buy them once wear them for a lifetime . Also I lost count of the number of random women who compliment my shoes, at my age and shape that's worth the price of admission right there!2 points

I'll let this one rest gjs4. I understand both doe and I gave you unsolicited feedback. I'm doing pretty darn well too, but I'm always am open to constructive criticism. Our comments come from a good place. If you were trying to achieve a goal with your survey and were to share it with legislators or a special interest group, you're not going to get far. I've sat with executives who have dismissed a whole powerpoint presentation because the bullet formatting wasn't consistent. Just my .02.2 points

Couple of t-bones pan fried in butter with a rub instead of a marinade. Pasta salad with a homemade vinaigrette dressing, and steamed broccoli.2 points

If you can't see the correlation of getting people out and exposed to the QDM concepts, showing them the benefits, instruction and seminars in habitat improvement, timber management and skills like aging on the hoof them I guess you may understand the concepts but do little to promote them outside your circle. That is fine. Your choice2 points

I have hiked the entire AT in NJ and NY all of it done on weekends and by bus or train from Manhattan. Granted it was many many years ago. Get yourself the 50 hikes close to NYC book and you'll won't be disappointed. My recommendation for a great short hike with great camping especially in the spring or fall because of the great raptor watching. Huckleberry trail in the catskills.2 points

Well these jerks want to buy the cow and retire it to some kind of sanctuary that they operate. I say great. It looks like the farmers of their area have a new alternative market. The farmers of that area ought to flood these creeps with all kinds of cattle for them to buy. Break the suckers .... lol. Let them put their money where their mouth is ...... ALL of their money.2 points

Years ago, you could watch these shows and actually learn something about hunting. Now, as mentioned above, they're all about selling products- and showing exotic locations, freakish antlers, etc. I very rarely see a show anymore that portrays anything that I can relate to.1 point

the big guys don't film here so much. I did catch a show on the sportsman channel and I wish I remembered the name, but they put on some drives up in the Adirondacks. About a dozen guys pushed a few MOUNTAINS! The main guy didn't get a deer but one of the kids shot a small 6 and they all celebrated it. It was cool to see "normal" hunting. Additionally I do watch deer and deer hunting tv. And try to catch heartland bowhunters and buck commander for entertainment. Sometimes we assume every new hunter might think these shows reality but I'm not sure that many actually do. Most of us had a mentor, and someone going in blind is hopefully doing a little more research on websites like this than just watching the outdoor channel. I didn't have a mentor for turkey and gained a lot of knowledge watching some shows, the Drury brothers in particular had a show where they competed and scored based on different types of turkey hunts.1 point

Their are very few shows that i follow, those are the local ones here in WNY and the ones that are informative.. I used to follow Drury's religiously .. then they became more lame.. until they came out with Drury"s 13 i do like that show.. they produced it for information only who what where why how setups.. i don't think they're ruining anything, but its all about the money. i just dont watch it much more. unless its a good informative show.. my dvr records a ton of shows, and i delete the majority of them before even watching them. I especially wont watch a show that hunts over bait pile, or that only rifle hunts. The shows that show real life are the ones that catch my eye... not the dreamy shows1 point

I spend a lot on clothes because IMO it's the most important thing I use for hunting. My bows are top of the line but I buy year olds on line. I'm never paying a grand for a bow that you literally can't give away three/four years later1 point

They're the equivalent of watching porn to feel loved. Hey, don't be knocking the importance of Porn in America. Where do you think I learned some of the tricks that put a smile on Mrs Redneck's face (and other's before her). lol1 point

We "rented" a 2,000 acre farm for the first five days. Other than that, it's total DIY...the landowner just turns us loose and we do out own thing. My dad and I have made a couple of trips to Daniel Boone National Forest...lots of other people had the same idea... A KY nonresident license/tags cost $215. The two we killed last year were studs...mine was 24#, 10.5" beard, 1 spurs and my wife's was 24.5#, 11" beard and 1 3/8" spurs. Here is hers... This year I'll kill any full fanned bird that comes in gobbling!!!1 point

Thanks. There will six of us in camp. Last year we started out as the stereotypical "NY guys", I think they were a bit surprised to find out we were rednecks that could actually kill turkeys!!!1 point
