  1. Crazy late night recovery. Finally had a NW wind at my property after work tonight, snuck into my stand@ 410 pm. Was watching several does and 2 little skippers feeding in my standing soybean field just after 6pm, when I noticed this buck standing ten yards into the woods just off the edge of the bean field. He was studying the field what seemed like an eternity, then he finally committed to enter, where he ran into my 100 grain muzzy. I run a ton of cameras, but I've never seen this buck before. I'm guessing he's gone on an excursion from his normal home range. Bonus buck for me. He's definitely the largest bodied deer I've taken on my property. I'm anxious to age his jaw bone and see how old he is. Had to hang a block in a tree at edge of a step ravine and use 150 ft of rope and my tractor, but I finally got him up, buy myself. 2. Well the truck is packed with everything but the guns I have to work until 5 tomorrow then I'm heading up. Looking like snow sat and sun and I am stoked! Can't wait to get on a track in the snow. Can't wait to sit beside the wood stove with a book and a cold beer! I wait all year for the next month and a half and I can't wait! 4. Working in construction during the winter months I would always top off my layers of clothing with a BIG, heavy, wool hoody. One of our supervisors started calling me woolybear and the rest of the gang followed. I used woolybear as a handle on a lot of sites when I first started out online, but everyone shortened it and just called me wooly, so that's what I go with now. Real life name is Matt unless I'm being questioned by law enforcement..., or a woman seeking answers to paternity questions, lol

  5. Well its a wrap for me till next weekend still haven't seen a deer this young season so far. I'm off to Colorado in the morning to hopefully bag an elk third trip out there hunting with no success. But it really doesn't matter with the scenery that comes with it. Will miss reading your guys updates for a week but it will give me something to do on the layover on the way home. Good luck to all.

  6. My camp is an old rustic log cabin, build from logs taken on the property. Loved spending time there and if I wasn't there, I was thinking about being there... Always had Cabin Fever!

  7. 10/20 - I got up at 5:20 this morning and saw I missed a call at 11:00 last night. I sent a text, then spoke with a hunter who had shot a buck with his muzzleloader last night. He reported he and a friend had tracked close to a mile, then backed off when they saw the deer stand up and hobble off. We started the track at good blood, at about the halfway point from last night. Luna locked on it and stayed on it. A couple times the hunter told me the deer had gone a different direction but I told him I trusted Luna's nose and we continued without blood. A few hundred yards beyond where they saw him last night, we found the four pointer bedded down, still alive. I shot him with my 3.57 and he jumped up and ran off. We tracked him about another 100 yards to the bank of a river and I finished him there. While on the way to the first track I got a call from a hunter I met briefly earlier this year while tracking for his friend. He shot a bear with his muzzleloader last night, and he and his Dad searched until midnight, then ran out of blood. This track was only 20 miles from the first one and we headed right over after finding the 4 pointer. We started at the hit sight and Luna made short work of getting to the hunters point of loss. Luna took us 400 yards beyond there without blood, then I finally spotted a drop on a leaf. Another 150 yards and I spotted the bear 75 - 100 yards in front of us, still alive and looking back at us. I called the hunter up and he shot at it, but it took off running. We caught up with it a short distance later and he finished it. I'd say Luna had a good morning......a deer and a bear by 9:15!

  8. Top 10 reasons men prefer guns over women10. You can trade an old 44 for a new 22.9. You can keep one gun at home and have another for when you're on the road. 8. If you admire a friend's gun and tell him so, he will probably let you try it out a few times.7. Your primary gun doesn't mind if you keep another gun for a backup.6. Your gun will stay with you even if you run out of ammo.5. A gun doesn't take up a lot of closet space.4. Guns function normally every day of the month.3. A gun doesn't ask, "Do these new grips make my butt look fat?"2. A gun doesn't mind if you go to sleep after you use it.And the number one reason a gun is favored over a woman...YOU CAN BUY A SILENCER FOR A GUN.

  17. I gotta give a shout out and huge thank you to a fellow hunting ny member, maytom Paul sent me a gift for our camp in pa. Paul your craftsmanship is superb on all your products, I love the beard display and have attached a few of my better beards. It will have its place on the turkey wall along with the spur display from you back in the day. If anyone's interest is peaked by either the spur display or beard display I would highly recommend maytom, his work is top notch. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

  30. This buck came in to a licking branch set up just past shooting light, but it was hot here in Allegany County, hit 74 degrees. The buck was panting like a bird dog running pheasants. But he still wanted to hit the zip-tied branch.

  31. NFA - Is a dedication to being safe up North where some never return. Started with a posted sign about David Boomhower, he was found opening weekend of that year, think it was 1991. My buddy said that's No Fooling Around and NFA was born. ADK is just a reference to the Adirondacks Sounded better than GETSOME which is my nickname as I tend to go all out when I do something. I did not want to sound imposing with NFA-GETSOME so NFA-ADK is what I used. Reference from Full Metal Jacket movie but is more about a going all in when you do something. If your going to be a bear, be a Grizzly! Jeff

  37. Last night (10/19) Had a nice 3.5 year old 8 point come out of the swamp crossed a swale, grunted and ran off a small buck and proceeded to make a scrape and ripped a tree up. Grunted at him, but no response. He was at about 100 yards. This was just a couple minutes before sunset. Excited to get back in the woods after this rain. First rutting action I have seen this year.

  38. My old Bear Super Kodiak recurve, sent off to Cabelas to purchase it back in the late sixties when they were still just mail order. Started out shooting Port Orford cedar arrows then fiberglass and on to Easton aluminum. Don't really bowhunt much any more, got rid of all the compounds but I still enjoy shooting the old Bear recurve at my target setup in the back yard. Actually got to meet Fred Bear at a Shot Show back in the late seventies. Al

  40. I have had some of my best hunts on drizzly days and fog...wet foggy days seem to pull the deer to their feet...hunted gun in down pours...never bow hunt when I know there is a heavy rain coming..but misty and fog ..never miss them. That said..Will not gun hunt in foggy weather...tough enough not getting shot at on clear days around here.

  42. 10/17 I was called this evening by a bow hunter who reported a high hit on an 8 pointer. He couldn't find any blood, and after one loop, backed out and called me. Luna hasn't worked in a few days due to a sore paw and acting lethargic yesterday. Today she was acting normal, which was very obvious when she got excited as she heard me interviewing the hunter. We started at the hit site, and after a minute or two, Luna started off through a field in the direction the hunter watched the deer go. She took a trail into the woods and we soon spotted blood. We ended up in a thick swampy area and Luna worked it like a champ. I lost count of how many times it was too thick for her to walk through and she'd stop and look back at me, asking for a lift. After 3/4 of a mile, Luna focused in on an area that was even thicker than the rest and started air scenting. She would try to go in, but couldn't penetrate the thick brush and swamp grass. I picked her up and waded in, as Luna started getting excited it was obvious we were close. I told the hunter his buck was in there, so he started searching too. After just a couple minutes, he hollered he found it. Unfortunately, the coyotes had already worked on the hindquarters. This was only 4 hours after the shot. His shot wasn't very high, but was back and had hit the liver.

  44. 10/14 - I received a call this afternoon from a hunter who reported shooting a doe last night with his crossbow. He tracked her across a long field, then stopped when she went into some thick stuff. He went back this morning and slowly advanced the track, then marked last blood and called me when he could know longer follow it. Luna followed the track to the hunters point of loss and was just starting to go beyond when she shut right down. It was like a switch had been turned and she refused to go further. It was when she started licking her paw that I realized she had picked up a ton of burrs in all of them. I informed the hunter I was going to pull the plug and take Luna home. He was very gracious, understanding completely. While removing the burrs I discovered Luna had cut a paw and earned herself a couple days off. I received a call from the hunter a few hours later informing me he had found the doe about 150 yards from where we stopped. I really like how this determined, ethical hunter never gave up or had the "it's just a doe" attitude that is sometimes seen. Sent from my iPhone

  47. My brother tested me around 9:20 just shot big buck. He waited 30min grabbed the arrow and backed out. He said it looked a little low, it was a 28yrd shot. We met up at my dad's and waited 2hrs and headed in to start the track. We followed the trail and finally found blood, not much though, we maybe went 15yards and we jumped him so we backed right out. Lucky for us our neighbor is an expert tracker and volunteers for deer search. We gave him a call and he was headed back from two calls, both times he recovered. About 3:30 we hit the trail with his dog. My wife dropped off my 8yr old son to tag along. Dog follows trail right off the bat, found his initial bed not much blood. About 150yrds later we jumped him and he takes off fast. Now the bloods pumping and he's leaving a decent trail not that the dogs needed much. We decide to press a little further, another 100 yards or so later u can see where he would stop so we kept going. Shortly after the dog does an quick right towards a ravine. My son and I stay back. I'm thinking the buck might have dropped into the gully, then my son says dad the deers right here and points to my left and it 5yrds away just laying there with his head up unable to move so we put a quick finish on him. Looks like he clipped one lung and maybe the liver. I have no cam pics of him. He did walk my camera seconds before my bro shot him. It's the best one off our land and out of a stand location I picked! He maxed out the 200lb scale, dressed out 175.
