  1. Shot a nice 2 year old opening day and then, this passed Saturday I tagged out in Ny... Started off the morning setting up with my wife to try and get her a bird, scouted this spot and last Sunday we had 6 long beards right where we set up this past Saturday. Friday night a storm system blew in, lot's of rain, wind etc... Wasn't sure how that would effect the birds but went in as planned.. Wife's got arthritis in her knee pretty bad and it was really hurting her on the way in.. I set up the decoys, got her set up and settled long before first light.. At first light the birds gobbled on the roost but not where they have been. Thinking the system moved them down a hundred yards or so into a gully. I also noted the once 6 birds were now more like 2 or 3, the flock had broken up during the week. Fly down they did gobble on the ground a bit but soon it got quiet.. Wife decided she didn't want to chase them hoping some birds would still follow their pattern and end up at our set up within an hour.. I left her some calls and took off on a run & gun hunt.. Worked my way around to another field and found birds were gobbling still on the ground, so used my crow call to keep them located and work in to where I could set up on them. Got within 70-80 yards of them, they were on another field edge or just inside the wood line I was in... Set up, broke out my slate call and they gobbled right on top of my calling.. worked 2 of them in but they walked just 30 yards away on the other side of a hill, then came in around me.. At one point they were 10 yards away drumming... I couldn't shoot because of a HUGE thorn bush behind me.. So I waited till I knew they were farther out from me and used the big oak I was leaning against to stand up.. When I did one of the Tom's saw me, putted but wasn't sure what I was... Slowly raised the Ulti Mag up, safety off, Red Dot on, found a hole to shoot through and got the red dot on the one that was strutting... He was 40 yards out and the load of #5's dumped him right over... Great bird... 3 year old, 20lbs, 9.25" thick beard with 1 1/8" spurs!!! Awesome way to finish my hunting season... 2 great birds..

  3. Well, I just had the best Turkey hunt for some years now. I did not go out early, probably hit my spot a little after 8, but as I was walking in I heard a gobble close by. Good start. I got my 3 decoys set up and settled into my brush blind, see the pic below. I waggled my gobbler tube and used the mouth call. Got a couple of immediate responses and then nothing for a while. I called a little longer and then stopped. About 15 minutes later more gobbles and clucking heading my way. 3 Jakes came in. One was a good deal bigger than the other two. The decoys did not spook them, but also they felt no need to come in for a closer look. They seemed comfortable tho and scratched around about 50 yards off. I lost sight of one, then heard one of those sonar like navigation calls they do to let the others know where they are. He had gone around and come up behind me. I slowly turned against the log I was lying against and watched him get closer. I pulled the gun up and placed the sites over a clear spot between branches. It was about 30 yards and I felt comfortable with the distance. The gun goes off and the bigger bird just kinda walks back confusedly in the direction he came from. I expected him to drop after a few steps. Nope....he kept on walking, not too fast but he wasn't hanging around. I was sure I had connected and so stalked after him to finish the job. He got clean away. I looked around for some time to make sure he wasn't pilled up behind anything. Couldn't find him. I went back to the kill zone. I must have gone too far in front or behind his head. There was a tree right behind him however. It was peppered with tight shot at the correct height. Couldn't believe he walked away from it. One lucky bird. Pick of the tree below

  4. It sounds like your in a location that hold some birds and sometimes it just takes a while to figure them out. If you hear them on the roost, then try to determine where they are going once they hit the ground. I tend to sit tight for an hour or so, because they often come in with out making a sound and once we are moving, it's so easy to bump them. But moving slowly and glassing can be productive around ag fields. Good luck and have fun.

  7. It's a lesser yellowlegs.....They winter in South America and nest in the arctic, so we only see them passing through...They often travel in flocks with greater yellowlegs...The species are very similar except the greater has a longer bill and longer legs...The lesser are about 2/3 the size of the greater. Other than that, I don't know a thing about them...<<smile>>....

  15. Great morning but no Toms lots of deer and some great pics and ...lets see if this works...a video Before anyone asks..yellow is dead grass and weeds I sprayed this a couple of weeks ago...the white cup...lets me know there is a cam there if I have a bird in sight... BTW water in puddles and the wheel barrel had ice covering it this morning it's cold out there! So hens came in at first light, no toms ,about 8a.m. they look to be headed either across to the house side of road or down the hill..I may have spooked a turkey behind me...I don't think crow wings would make that loud a sound taking off...probably the Tom from neighbors above me ,where the hens went yesterday. That would figure...don't care...... it was a great and educational morning. Hens came in from opposite directions and one had to have been at the farmers field first ...she was soaked. The other I know had roosted near by. I heard her and she was bone dry. I know where the deer are coming off the neighbors and where they are walking to go over my ridge. I know that if I want to crow hunt I had best just leave that blind up. they love the clover plots and soon the mulberries will be growing. I can really move around in that blind with them all 10 yrds away and they are clueless This is good practice for deer season..though the adult deer saw the decoys and skirted the area before the hens showed up. Heads up ..I didn't edit it so download will take a bit of time... 20170508_064712.mp4

  17. Just want to thank mowin again for a great hunt. I already knew I wanted to learn and developed an even greater respect for the sport and lifestyle. The endurance, persistence, patience and so much more that goes into hunting turkeys and the relationship, knowledge and skills you learn are incredible - and I certainly learned a lot from mowin about everything right up to butchering. I'm excited to get out there and use my other tag before the season ends and can't wait for the other animal seasons and a chance to learn the skills and knowledge to hunt them as well! 18. Missing ain't that bad during turkey season. You get all the fun of the hunt a sore shoulder from the shotgun and you don't have to tote a heavy, awkward bird out of the woods and suffer through some "edible" meat. It's really best case scenario. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. Jeff, congratulations on your first turkey! Great bird and nice job! Mowin, huge props to you! Taking out a new hunter, calling and everything you did was absolutely awesome! Great job! I've said it before, I'll say it again. There are some outstanding people on here!

  20. So went out with mowin again today. Was still very quiet. Right around 8 we finally came across a tom. Got down and sat right along the natural fence between two fields. We kept calling and he kept gobbling. Took his sweet time getting to us, was a group of them so he already had some hens. Finally around 850 he came close enough to take. Happy to say I was able to finally nail my first bird and I am hooked. All the patience and waiting, wind, rain and cold were worth it. And he helped me butcher it afterwards. 9.5" beard and 1" spurs! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  34. Jeff and I had to work for this guy. Not a single gobble until about 7:45. The sun came out, and the adjacent hillsides cam alive with gobbling. Happen to stumble upon this guy. Walked within 80 yrds of him. Took about an HR to get him in range. I was so nervous for Jeff. I was shaking like a leaf in a wind storm.. lol. I get more nervous when I'm calling for someone, then when I'm alone.

  35. Shot half the beard off unfortunately, but it's the best turkey I ever got. He came in running after a hen that walked by maybe 30 seconds. He strutted once he stopped and once he got out of strut it was a perfect shot. No more than a 20 yard shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  41. State DEC and Parks Announce New York State First-Time Camper Program The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) today announced that New York State will provide free First-Time Camper weekends throughout the summer in 2017. Families that have never camped before will have the opportunity to see if they enjoy sleeping under the stars before investing in their own gear by registering for a fully stocked campsite at select state campgrounds one weekend from July 7 through August 25, 2017. The new campers will be provided with a family tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, lantern, and even firewood. A Camping Ambassador will meet families at the campsite and help them get camp set up with a camping 101 lesson. Bathrooms and hot showers are a short walk from the campsites. To make the weekend getaway even more enjoyable, campers will have an opportunity to learn from experts how to fish, hike, bird watch, paddle and more, all while having fun and making memories that last forever. 46. Good heavens, do we need hazmats to hunt now and then scorch the carcass with a flame thrower for a few min before going near it? If anything I think this thread has been helpful and pushes me off the fence on a carrying decision. Last year I had a deer in my minivan on a blanket, but considering family gets in there I think I will get one of those hitch carriers and throw it on there so that it's never inside. If nothing else that will keep tickets out of the van.

  47. It's funny how we all get it but you. If I recall correctly someone voiced their opinion that youth deer season around that time was dumb. Hmmmm, wonder who that could have been,
    1 point
  48. I think the point is more to motivate the mentors to take the youth out BEFORE the mentors get so wrapped up in their own hunts that they don't let the kiddos tag along. You don't have to look too hard to find selfish hunters these days, so the youth season may be the only opportunity some kids get even through the month of May.
