  1. I owe a lot to these three. Elmo, and Shawn Hu, actually thought of the troubling times I'm going through, instead of themselves. They're kick a$$, and I'm proud to call them my friends, and fellow hunters. When they brought back Elmo's tree stand, they actually thought of my needing a sight, and arrow rest for my bow-although I never asked them to, and they sacrificed what they could have gotten, and got me these items. You guys are fantastic, and I've been shooting like crazy, and she's dead nuts at 25 yards. Biz-R, your sending me a doe permit for 3N last season, and that was a great thing to do. Just the fact that you were willing to help someone you didn't know, was fantastic. If you don't need one of those 3N's this year, I could definitely use it, as I could at least hunt the DEP property (just going on your offer in the other thread). These guys went out of their way to help me, and I just wanted to say thank you. THANKS, GUYS!!!!!

  3. Bumping a deer is now hunting? Dont you think you are going a little far with your interpretation? If you arent, then I must be a big time poacher. I see and bump deer all the time while I am out coyote hunting, riding my bike, walking through the woods all times of the year.

  4. i live in central new york, and whenever im in a different part of the country i ALWAYS say "upstate new york" and make it clear there is more to the state than the city. if you dont they automatically assume when you say new york, your from the city.

  10. I would first make 110% I am legal, meaning 500 ft. from his closest "dwelling". I know you said it's far away...but 500 feet is pretty far. A 500' radius covers 18 acres.

  11. The floating pin on a TC shouldnt change anything either. That is just holding the frame to the barrel. As long as the scope stays on the barrel it will be fine.

  12. The scope gets attached to the barrel so it doesn't.

  16. Bubba- Have you gone completely nuts or something? You have settled down into a mode of trying to pick a fight with every member of the forum, on this and every other thread that you have gotten involved with. Calm down guy. Life is too short. Pull yourself out of this combative mode.

  17. In case you might have missed it, there has been a few pages devoted to the discussion of a reply made on the first page of this thread, mainly: Since I had the resources and the time I figured I would go to the source. But, thank you for being so concerned about my hunting, however I doubt that I missed anything. I've become pretty good at multi-tasking .... lol.

  18. Dave not to get into yes it does no it does not but it does kill most parasites and a lot of bacteria . Thats why sushi restraunts freeze and thaw everything before they serve it raw. Obviously the best way to kill these is heat but if you don't like yours well done you should freeze it.

  20. Not that it will help you now, but for the future if you will. I like to get into my areas in the winter every once in a while after the season and just start pushing the deer around and follow thier tracks. That way when I run into some pressure in one spot I know right where to head to next. Just something to think about.

  21. You're welcome, Stan. If more hunters saw each other for the passion we share rather then our differences, this sport and tradition would be so much stronger.

  22. So this weekend I went to my friends camp in the southern tier and Saturday evening he ended up getting his first deer with a bow, a doe. But today I went out to my stand that is behind my house and sat there all morning and then before I left I swapped out the SD card and went home disappointed seeing no deer this morning. Then I was shocked at what I saw on the card from sunday morning... Since I was in the southern tier. Like I told my wife, I probably would have shot the doe and never have even seen the rest of the deer pictured.

  26. Yup, I say Fallow deer as well. And as far as what to do when it walks by your stand when you are standing there with a bow in your hands......."Fallow your instincts!".......LOL!

  27. Fallow deer for certain. My best friends parents had them for pets for years.

  30. It's okay to drag it out by the neck, but not hang it by the neck? Really?? I think it's more disrepectful to be criticizing someone for the way he hangs his deer.

  31. But how do you assume that Romney is going to run things the same way Bush did? Obama is running things way differently than Clinton did. Blame Bush has become an automatic response for a lot of people and I just don't think thats the answer every time Obama is critisized . He's not held accountable for anything.

  33. One of the best hunters I know uses NOTHING,no special soaps, sprays ect. he just hunts the wind. He has a nice wall of heads. I figure I gotta wash myself and my clothes might as well use unscented stuff. As for the mouth, again the deer can pick out each smell you can't "cover it". That said I won't ever leave my Atomic Fireballs at home !! They last 20-30 minutes each, which helps alieve the bordom, they work better then any cough drop that last 3 minutes.I've also killed my best bucks while sucking on one. I think if they put them in camo wrappers and sold them at Dicks they could get $5 a piece from hunters....

  34. Just got a call, from someone "in the know" he drives a green jeep with emblems on the doors and light bar on top.... He said you can have your gun loaded, arrow knocked in complete darkness there is nothing written in the law against it. You could sit in your stand at 2AM with a loaded gun and untill you FIRE at a deer, you've done nothing wrong. He even mentioned coyotes.... which you could shoot. Now if your creeping along a field edge watching, stopping ect. you could have an issue. One such time he arrested the guy because he asked him "what are you doing? and he said he thought something might pop out..". If the guy did not say that there was not much he could have done. We're going to meet up next time I hunt,if anyone has more questions.

  35. Once you have killed it, it's MEAT...Hang it anyway you want to.. RESPECT is involved before the deer dies.. It involves trying to make a clean kill and then making a responsible effort to recover the animal after the shot. The only way to disrespect a dead animal would be to wantonly waste the meat.

  36. Its amazing to see the amount of responses these deer baiting threads get, especially here in NY where the law is cut n dry, baiting is not allowed. That being said it amazes me how you will never hear a single poster say hes a baiter but it seems everyone hates them and would like to see them hung and its only a few bad apples or a very small percentage of the NY hunter population that would do this. Then i wonder why the local Tractor Supply and Agway cant keep enough 50 lbs bags of corn on the shelves this time of year and how sales drop off dramatically after the holidays??? Is it just that the local livestock gets hungrier in the fall?? Funny the month of May seems to have an effect on the local livestocks appetite also??

  37. I don't see the choice as having anything to do with respect. Lol .... there is no real way of hanging a deer up with it's internal organs removed and the body cavity spread open for cooling, that could ever indicate respect, or lack of respect. I never even factored that thought into my decision as to how to hang a deer. Maybe we are getting a bit carried away with this "respect" thing? Well it might be a bit tacky to put a hat on it and sunglasses and stick a cigarette in it's mouth ..... lol.

  38. if you are taking a doe make sure you have a rope. You can drag bucks by the antlers but does are really difficult and awkward without a rope. Also if you are by yourself, bring a short piece of rope to help in field dressing. I usually tie the outside rear leg to a sappling so that it holds the leg in the air - makes dressing a lot easier. If you are with a buddy they can just hold the leg up while you are gutting.

  40. Actually farmers have a lot cheaper places to buy feed than Dicks. The stuff sold at Dicks, Gander mountain, Bass-pro, etc. are strictly designed and marketed for hunting/baiting purposes.

  41. Looks to me like the rut has started. the bucks are starting to get aggressive
    1 point
  42. Yeah, back to the topic ... lol A deer average walking speed is 3.5 mph - 4 mph. If a deer takes a step or two while feeding, that is likely its forward speed. If you assume that to be the speed that he moves, that is 61.6 inches per second. If you shoot a 50 yard distance with a super fast bow that is much faster than almost all of the hunting bows in common use (I used 400 FPS), the arrow over that 50 yards will be in the air 0.375 seconds. And that assumes no deceleration during flight (for calculation simplicity). So over that 0.375 seconds, if the deer takes a step or two at time of release, the deer will have moved 23.1 inches by the time the perfectly shot arrow gets there. So add that one more little factor to the many other errors already mentioned, that are magnified as shot distances grow. Look, I am not saying what other people should or shouldn't do in terms of shot selection. I only know that the list of variables in long shots are many and they all seem to grow significantly as the distance grows. So that simply is the reason why I treat the bow as a short-range weapon and limit my shots severely from my personal capabilities. I can control my own abilities, but there is no way I can control what the deer does. Everybody has to make their own choices. I am simply conveying thoughts as to some of the variables that occur to me, and why I voluntarily limit my shooting distances. I'm sorry if that caused someone to lose their mind, but these things are my own opinions which I believe is what internet forums are mostly all about.

  43. It's based on the solunar theory. I had heard about "the moon tables" before. There are a few resources on the net. Some free, some for a fee. http://www.fieldandstream.com/solunar_tables_weather_hunt
